Subject: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: Bobert Date: 14 Jul 05 - 09:06 PM Well, well, well... I thought it was just all that danged hard assed work I'z been doin' movin' an' such but I'z been like real tired and havin' to take an afternoon nap and been a little on the dazed side wid the ol' thinkerator... No, I ain't so bad that I think George Bush is a good guy 'er nuthin' but been havin problems doin' math and seein' as I'z supposed to gearin' up to do another renovation, havin' a bummed thinkerator ain't good... I thought maybe I was havin some dementia 'er halfhiemers stuff going on but, no, according to my doc a bl;ood test reveals that Iz got anemia... That's 'bout it... Yeah, she (my doc) had me have another blood test and though she ain't in until Monday mornin', her nurse said that the second test said the same thing: ANEMIA.... Well, she couldn't 'er wouldn't say if it was the kind that's badder than the other kind but did tell the P-Vine, upon the P-Vine's insistence, that it prolly ain't all that bad??? Whatever that means??? All I know is that yesterday I was tryin' to figure out the sqaure footage of a buildin' and I didn't have a clue what 7 X 7 was... And I was a little confused about a few other things... No, not George Bush... Well, if anyone out there in Catburg has had similar stories 'er knows much about this stuff, I'd sure like to know 'bout it... Right now it has me a little concerned because I got way too much on my plate to be an idiot... Bobert |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: SINSULL Date: 14 Jul 05 - 09:35 PM HMMMM Probably not menopause. Have you been checked for an infection? A bleeding ulcer? Had a colonoscopy? Anemia doesn't just happen, Bobert. Improve your diet, add some iron supplements (and fiber or you will suffer), and find out what is causing it. My anemia was related to a huge fibroid tumor - also not likely in your case. My son used to become anemic when he forgot to eat - too busy playing at summer camp. The problem with it is that you are run down and open to all sorts of infections a healthy person wouldn't even notice. Plus you're tired, cranky, forgetful, cranky, pasty-faced, cranky...keep it up and Kendall will have a rival curmudgeon. Keep us posted. SINS |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: LilyFestre Date: 14 Jul 05 - 10:09 PM Hey Bobert, Are you taking any kind of medications? Sometimes they can deplete your iron supplies just as much as dietary intake. And how's your blood sugars? Any issues there? That kind of tiredness and confusion/unable to think of stuff you KNOW can be related to low blood sugars too. Having been anemic, all I can say is let me know if they give you iron pills and you can find a way to take them without being nauseated....man I hate those things and as a result...don't take them nearly as much as I've been told to. UGH. Take it easy and don't be too hard on yourself...take those naps when you need them! Michelle |
Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: jimmyt Date: 14 Jul 05 - 10:10 PM there are many types of Anemia, Bobert and I am sure your physician will get you all fixed up with little or no effort on your part and without liver! Until this happens, I would drink a lot of alcohol and do absolutely no yardwork or anything that could be considered being helpful. Maybe requesting breakfast in bed would also be a good idea. Whatever you can do to ride this a bit until you are expected to behave again! good luck! |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: Rapparee Date: 14 Jul 05 - 11:11 PM Bobert, I was anemic once, back about 15 years ago. Doc had me do a barium milkshake to see about ulcers, an endoscopy (they stick a light down yer throat), and a colonoscopy (they stick a light up yer...well, it ain't yer throat). I wanted 'em to do the endo and colono at the same time ("Doctor! I see a light!"), but they din't. They also din't find anything. So they figured it was because I was taking Ibuprofen. Then about a year later I find out that a friend was also bad from taking Ibu -- in his case he was bleeding out through his stomach. I quit taking it (except with food if there's nothin' else) and haven't had a problem since. I also take vitamins with iron. My friend died. Not from the ibuprofen, from something else. Cancer, I think it was. GIT IT CHECKED OUT!!!! Yer losin' blood someplace. If you don't want to do it fer yerself, do it for the P-vine. 'Cuz if you don't, I'm gonna come out there and hit you so hard upside the head yer brains are gonna rattle fer a month! |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: GUEST Date: 15 Jul 05 - 11:03 AM Hemo iron foods (red meat, seafood, poultry) are rich in iron and contain iron in a form that is easily absorbed by the body. Red meat also has a special effect on iron absorption. Red meat, when eaten together with the vegetables, can boost the absorption of non-hemo iron by up to 400%. Vitamin C has a similar positive effect on the absorption of iron Tea contains tannin that could inhibit the absorption of iron. Avoid Tea Foods Rich in Iron(in mg - 18 = daily requirement): Blackstrap Molasses, one tablespoon 3.0 Dates or Prunes, ½ cup 2.4 Beef, Pork, Lamb, three ounces 2.3 to 3.0 Liver three ounces 8.0 to 25.0 Clams, Oysters ¾ cup 3.0 Dark meat Turkey ¾ cup 2.6 Pizza, cheese or pepperoni, ½ of 10 inch pie 4.5 to 5.5 |
Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 15 Jul 05 - 11:15 AM Giok just mentioned the problem I encounter with iron supplements--if I take them at all I have to take them every other day, or cut the pill and take half a day or they plug me up. After a few doses it tends to turn your stool very dark, so you can presume that you're eliminating most of it anyway. Take a small dose, it's more than you're getting now, and boost your iron. I think the suggestion about the new climate is also viable--not necessarily because of what you're eating there, but perhaps what you're NOT eating there. If you been working as hard as one usually has to work when moving a household, then take a few quiet and relaxing moments (remember that calm room you were going to set up, your comfortable space in this new place?) and eat more regular meals, take a little iron supplement, and give yourself a break. Good luck! SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: Rapparee Date: 15 Jul 05 - 08:18 PM Well, after thinkin' on it and cogitatin' on it, I have found the cause to Bobert's anemia. It was so simple, so straightforward, it was staring me in the face all along! I could kick myself for not realizing sooner that his problem is caused by...vampires! Yup, them blood-suckin' critters from Rurisvania or wherever they're from. Somebody has imported 'em into Luray, Virginia and they've busted loose and found ol' Bobert to feast on. He's new in town, and them vampires probably heard one of the locals call him "new blood." Now, vampires ain't as bad as they've been called. Yeah, they'll put the bite on their friends, stick 'em for the drinks, and just make bloody nuisances of themselves, but they'll never ask ya for a stake dinner. And they're always gone before sun-up. But still, Bobert, you'd best take care and wear garlic and 'specially make the P-vine wear garlic. Them vampires are jist waiting to sing "fangs for the mammaries." (Seriously, dude -- got to the doctor.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: CarolC Date: 15 Jul 05 - 08:30 PM My mother was diagnosed as being anemic, even though her diet contained plenty of iron. Her doctor said it was because her body wasn't producing enough of the digestive substances needed for her body to absorb and utilize it. He had her take the hydrochloric acid and that corrected the problem. That's how I found out about using the hc in that way. Might be worth checking into if nothing else turns up and/or fixes the problem. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: Ebbie Date: 16 Jul 05 - 01:10 PM Men and pre-menopausal women have totally different reasons for ever beng anemic. I was diagnosed as anemic various times in my life but never after menopause. Without blood loss one should never, I was told, suffer from anemia, which is why men rarely become anemic. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: dianavan Date: 16 Jul 05 - 01:25 PM Bobert - You need to investigate. Why are you anemic? In the meantime, bake with non-suphured, black strap molasses (just a little), use cast iron and eat your spinach. Spinach doesn't have to be slimy. Cook it fresh with very little water (the water clinging to the leaves is enough) until it just barely wilts. Add garlic and butter. Yum! Spinach salad with oranges and almonds is also very good. Take small doses of iron supplement at a time. Hey, this is a small thing. It can be corrected. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: CarolC Date: 16 Jul 05 - 02:06 PM Spinach contains oxalic acid, so it shouldn't be the main leafy green used for dietary iron. Too much oxalic acid isn't good for people. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: dianavan Date: 16 Jul 05 - 03:57 PM Carol - I think I mentioned this before but alot of oxalic acid can be removed prior to ingestion. My ex-husband could not tolerate oxalic acid but loved rhubarb. I pour boiling water over the chopped rhubarb and let it sit a few minutes. I then pour off the water and alot of oxalic acid. What remains is rhubarb without the bite. It actually works well. I know someone who actually makes wine from rhubarb. I have told him I think its a bad idea but I think its too late. He drinks alot of this wine and I think it actually affects his mind in ways that other wines do not. I can't imagine what it is doing to his body. |

Subject: RE: BS: Anemia Got Holt of the Hillbilly.... From: Kaleea Date: 17 Jul 05 - 01:32 AM Sounds like "the change" to me--have you tried estrogen? But seriously folks, I sometimes have to take Kelp tabs because I am allergic to almost all veggies & all melons & many fruits. You can also eat dark chocolate--I'm not allergic to that! From my mother's side of the family I inherited many of the family traits, including chronic anemia. Since time immemorial, the women in the family used cast iron till all that aluminum came out. After my mother inherited her mother's castiron skillet--that Granny bought second hand & the handle was broke at the time almost 90 years ago--she didn't have the anemia anymore. When I was rear-ended in my vehicle 4 1/2 years ago, what was thought to be concussion related hard-to-think-straight-itis has continued. I have alot of trouble with anything to do with numbers. I can no longer memorize lyrics & tunes easily, it takes months, & sometimes the lyrics never seem to stay. Turns out that when your head whips forward-whiplash, more damage is sometimes done when the head whips back, like slight swelling or tearing of the brainstem or surrounding tissues. This has caused some of these problems for me. I almost need a retriever whenever I attempt to have a conversation, because I frequently cannot 'retrieve' a word from my brain & have to substitute some other word. I tire way too easily, & have headaches. Any chance that you flopped your head around whilst tossing boxes & furniture?
