I'm looking for the lyrics to an old Phil Ochs song. I don't know that he ever recorded it, by I know the Mitchell Trio did. It's titled "That's the Way it's Gonna Be" and starts with "So you say that all the good times are gone, and you say this rain (reign) will keep rainin' on...

I have the words around somewhere as I used to sing it once in a while. I will look for them unless somebody else comes up with them. The song was by Bob Gibson and Phil Ochs. It was recorded by the Mitchell Trio on their album of the same name. It was also recorded by The Backporch Majority and I think Glen Yarbrough may have recorded it also. As far as I know Ochs never recorded it, but I do not know about Gibson.

Bob Gibson put it on at least one album (for me his best)- "Funky in the Country." It was a live album at The Amazingrace Coffeehouse on the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Illinois in approx. April, 1974.

For those who don't know-Bob Gibson passed away recently. :-(

Well here are the words

THAT'S THE WAY IT'S GONNA BE
(Bob Gibson/Phil Ochs)
  Em F# Em
So you say that all our good times are gone,
F# Em
And so you say this rain will keep rainin' on,
A D G B7 Em
I'll walk along with my head held high
A D G B7 Em
Finding that song you know I'll sing it to the sky
A D G B7 Em
I may be wrong but I'll live till I die
C Am B7
That's the way it's gonna be, wait and see.
Even though you say the devil knocks at my door
And you say my ship will not reach the shore
I've got a will and a thousand ways,
I've got a dream of a thousand better days
I've got a smile that just stays and stays,
That's the way it's gonna be, wait and see.

Even though you say I've reached the end of the road
And you say the tides are all runnin' low
Victory is waiting for me round the bend
I won't stay down for the count of ten
I've said it before, and I'll say it again,
That's the way it's gonna be, wait and see.

Repeat 1

happiest forsooth

Many, many thanks. Anyone that remembers the Mitchell Trio, Phil Ochs, and Bob Gibson is more than OK in my book. After about 25 years, I'll be singing this one again this weekend at the coffee house. Thanks again!

For more info on the Mitchell Trio, check out Folk Era's web site. Some great looking pages --- for the M/Trio, plus John Stewart, Clancy Bros.,Glen Yarbrough, Small Potatoes, Kingston Trio, David Roth, etc. All well done, with sound clips via RealAudio.

There are two different versions of the lyrics to the song. There is a video on YouTube of Phil singing this song with the following lines:

Even though you say hard times knock at my door
Though you say I'll never smile anymore
I just imagine that I'm ten feet tall
Then if I try I can climb the highest wall
It doesn't matter if I slip down and fall
That's the way it's gonna be, wait and see

Even though you say I've reached the end of my row
Though you say my tides are all runnin' low
It's been so long since I tried to frown
That ol' man trouble will never get me down
It's all that easy when you know where you're bound
That's the way it's gonna be, wait and see

It was from The Broadside Tapes I, recorded in 1964, a year before the Mitchell Trio released the album of the same title.

Later in a 1974 reunion, Bob and Phil sang the same lyrics as CMT did.

A demo version of this song can be found on Phil's "The Broadside Tapes I" album, with the initial lyrics. Bob recorded the song in 1974. Here is a slideshow of Phil and Bob doing this song together.

According to allmusic, this song was also recorded by the Mitchell Trio, the Back Porch Majority, Lee Mallory, Jose Feliciano, Glenn Yarbrough, John Denver, Curt Boettcher and Bob Cook. I don't know who Bob Cook is, he recorded the song on an album called "Love Is a Verb".
