Here are a couple of even-later belated entries for my "CDs Wanted" list:

Anything at all by Allan Sherman.
Anything by Stan Freberg except "Stan Freberg Presents The United States Of America: Volume 1, 'The Early Years' and Volume 2, 'The Middle Years'" (the boxed set -- I already have this and love it! Rumble rumble rumble, mutiny mutiny mutiny...)

Thank you, O Most Benevolent, Gracious and Munificent Sainted Elf!

Bootlickingly yours,
SharonA

OK, Sorcha! Pesky little Nor'Easter got in my way yesterday, but it's over now. So then, Sorcha and Santa, here goes...

1. Age: 49.
2. Gender: Female.
3. Favorite color(s): Blue, primarily. :^) Also aqua, purple, maroon.
4. Favorite books: American history, especially 1700s-1800s; biographies from that era; Gnosticism and early Christianity.
5. Books wanted: "War Letters" edited by Andrew Carroll; "The Mystic Christ" by Ethan Walker III; "The Johannine Gospel in Gnostic Exegesis" by Elaine Pagels; "Weird U.S." or "Weird Pennsylvania" (or any book in the "Weird" state series).
6. Favorite music: Singer/songwriter humorists -- any from your area that I should know about?
7. CDs wanted: "Some Days" by Lou and Peter Berryman; anything by Christine Lavin; anything by Spike Jones except his Christmas CD; "The Truth Comes Out" by Susan Piper; "Semi-Conducted" or "Toast" by The Arrogant Worms; "The Music in the Wood" or "Full Throated Abandon" by Tanglefoot; sea chanties.
8. Movies wanted: "A Star Is Born" (Judy Garland-James Mason) -- the RESTORED version with out-takes and still photos that bridge the "lost" footage while the audio of that footage plays.
9. T-Shirt Size: Large.
10. Collecting: Cat items (figurines, ornaments, plaques, suncatchers, etc.). I've been searching unsuccessfully for an Enesco figurine in the Calico Kittens series entitled "A Stitch in Time Saves Nine". I'm also missing the Christmas ornaments from the Carlton Cards/American Greetings series "Merry Mischief Makers" dated 2001 and earlier (featuring kittens Miss and Chiff).
11. Hobbies: Besides songwriting for guitar and trying to learn various other instruments of mine that have been collecting dust, I like to visit craft shows, flea markets and thrift shops.
12. Jewelry: Either gold or silver is OK, though I rarely wear jewelry and I have more than I'll ever use.
13. I'd like the 2006 "Mutts" (comic strip) wall calendar; but I'd especially enjoy any postcards/photos/books about the distinctive sites and/or eccentricities of my Santa's locality (for example, the huge statue of Amos the Amish farmer in front of Zinn's Diner in Pennsylvania).
Negative hints: Please, no gifts of fragrances (candles, potpourri, cologne) or food, because of medical and dietary restrictions. I don't have much interest in cooking, and cookbooks or recipes won't inspire me to change. The same is true of gardening; I worked for a seed company for years so if I never see another seed packet or bulb it'll be too soon!

There ya go, Santa. I apologize again for my tardiness in posting this. Better late than never, they say, and I hope they're right! I promise I'll be good from now till Christmas, and hopefully I'll only get 11/12ths of a stockingful of coal!!

Remorsefully,
SharonA

At last she speaks. Me and the reindeer were well scundered. We weren't sure what to get you. You nearly ended up with the tie and socks Mrs Clause got me last year, I'm keeping the fuzzy slippers.

So you want a wee clue about me. Well let me see yes I do play music. I'm not nearly so famous as some around these parts. Even the dog howls when I play the tin whistle but what does he know. He drinks out of the toilet. He's looking at me now with the furrowed brow over the top of his newspaper. I swear to God he could read your mind. You darn't speak. He has the ould ears pricked up. He knows somethings up. Anyway Alba my dear if you have been truely good then something interesting will be wending its way to you very soon. Over and out for now, SSC.

Just found out (via Google and a number of Web siytes that the latest posting date - for arrival by Christmas - to The US of A is 28/10/05.

In my case I have just enough time put my Santees present on the sliegh.

The newspaper idea is excellent. I shall wrap pressie in pretty paper and fold the local paper around it and put the whole lot in a padded envelope.

Fortunately I have a day off on 28/10 and can include the above in the other things herself finds for me to do.

I'm also looking for two Bernard Cornwell books - The Bloody Ground and Battle Flag. Don't mind if they're second hand, but do prefer paperbacks as they are easier to hold with arthritic thumbs.

From: Hollowfox

Here's this year's update. (Yay, I finally learned how to copy-and-paste!)
1) 56, but don't let that limit you.
2) Female, but don't let that limit you.
3) Depends on what the object is. My mother says I got my color sense in a Crayola crayon box. I tend to wear blues, greens, rose shades, and black.
4) Mostly fantasy and science fiction, for fiction. Mostly folklore and storytelling for nonfiction, plus whatever I'm pursuing at the moment. History, nature, oddities in language, humor, the list goes on and on.
5) Used books are wonderful, as long as all the pages are there. If you give me something you instinctively think I'd like, I'll never tell you if I already have a copy. However, a nice used copy of Secret History of the Mongols would come in handy. Or R. J. Stewart's agan Imagery in English Folksong. And I just gave away my beloved copy of Post Wheeler's Tales from the Japanese Storytellers; come to think of it, anything by Post Wheeler is a Good Thing.
6) Traditional English-language, first and formost. Especially ballads. But I also enjoy opera, novelty/humor songs, spoken word (history, humor, or both). Used is good.
7) Ooh. T.S.Elliot's reading of Old Possom's Book of Practical Cats (fat chance). Or, if you're in England, Taffy Thomas's Take These Chains From My Heart (A do-able one at last!). Casettes are fine,or used recordings, likewise anything you think might be interesting.
8)Songcatcher, Topkapi (with Peter Ustinov), Sword of the Valiant (with Sean Connery) Macumba Love. Again, used videos/cd's are fine.
9) extra large (alas!)
10) Nothing cutsey! I seem to have an accumulation of dragons, bells, and nature themed figurines.
11) Embroidery, cross stitch and latch-hook. Reading, camping, cooking, baking, eating, and drinking. Nature. Cats. And a bit of medieval re-creation
12) I have both, but tend toward silver-tone.
13) Unless you actually run across something on this list, don't break your neck sticking to this list. My tastes cover a broad enough range that I'll probably be ecstatic with whatever you choose. In the past SS exchanges, I;ve been delighted with (among other things) local candy, Christman tree decorations, and cd's of local bands from my kind and perceptive SS's. No live animals, please, though; I'm up to capacity. Don't be scared, just have fun.

I said I'd post some blank verse:

So much for the blank verse.

I looked at that list and decided to ignore it, just like last year...

I have provided some hints (modified slightly from last year) to help and and all future Secret Santas, listed in more or less, but not necessarily, descending order of preference. Just go down the list till you reach a point at which you are comfortable, and remember, it's not the value of the gift, but the thought that counts. Of course, monetary value to a degree will offset rudeness and ill feeling, so you can insult me as much as you want, provided it is in balance...

Gold Bullion bars. For ease of accounting, please supply in complete dump truck loads - if you are not a Bruce Willis Fan, I expect this one will go completely over your head... :-)

Ditto, Silver bullion...

Jewellery, Gold (with stone settings if desired) of sufficient value that merits not melting it down. For ease of accounting please supply in complete container loads ...

Ditto, Silver...

Jewellery, Gold (with stone settings if desired) of sufficiently lesser value that merits melting it down. For ease of accounting please supply in complete container loads ...

Ditto Silver...

Precious Stones. For ease of accounting please supply in complete pallet loads ...

Ditto, Semiprecious Stones...

Negotiable Bearer Bonds. For ease of accounting please supply in complete pallet loads ...

Music, your personal CDs - single copies...

Music, your personal CDs - multiple copies...

Non-Australian food or sweets or biscuits that will definitely be unavailable in Australia - be careful though as some things such as meats etc, will definitely be seized by Customs. No 'diet stuff' though as I can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners, and yes I CAN taste most of them, apart from some of them giving me the runs etc. I'm a tea and coffee fan, and I prefer dark chocolate - the best I have found so far is the Lindt 85%.

Sheet Music (I can read anything up to full orchestral/band/choral scores - no wuckers mate!), or books new or secondhand, almost any topic. I don't have 'Rise Up Singing'... but anything old that you pick up secondhand will be appreciated. My tastes are eclectic and wide ranging, so those weird and wonderful old books from the turn of the century (I often collect them just for the tunes therein) that show you how to learn any instrument, I also like many old Oak (Music) Publications, or attempt to explain the theory of flight in the 1920's, or First Aid in WWI, or 'etiquette for young maids' etc, or anything that you think "Who the hell would want this?"... I am a 'Renaissance Man', and interested in things technical as well as artistic. Some thing like a programming manual for a Univac, or a magnetic memory core plane, for instance... I play anything keyboard (piano, harpsichord, pipe & reed organs, piano accordions), whistles, Symphonie (hurdiegurdy), hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, autoharp, misc percussion, but also I have some old 'folk music for guitar/banjo/etc' books. I am concentrating on my collecting these days in the music field, but that is not essential - if you see something that screams 'Weird Shit Man'...'

BTW, I have the full set of Mudcat CDs.... Weird Shit Man...

I am into humour too BTW. If you want to learn something about me, see my profile, or visit http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~rhayes/vfoolshm.htm - my personal page is off that.... Weird Shit Man...

If you want to send me a T-shirt - I am about 6 ft tall and nearly 200 lbs. at least XL - 110cm + chest size - cotton ones shrink, you know. XXL or larger - I like to wear the really large ones as night shirts. I don't yet have a Mudcat one. I like Royal/Navy blue.

Last year I got some real Maple Syrup, for instance. Yum!

Things don't have to be brand new - see the bit on old books, music, etc above. Old or unusual instruments - they don't have to be big or expensive.

Favourite author - Robert Aspirin - don't have his last one, and they won't bring them into Australia. for some stupid reason.

Robin

I like Native American and Indian design in clothing and decor.

Dear Santa

Thank you for all the presents you gave me last year. This year I'm sending my Secret Santa a few ideas:

1. what is your age range?
48. I know that is a specific not a range!

2. gender?
Male - very definitely, and very red blooded!

3. Do you have a favorite color?
Deep reds, plum and particularly burgundy.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
Fiction - Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Patrick O'Brian (good humorous science fantasy or early 19th Century naval)
Non-fiction - history - particularly mid eighteenth century onwards. British Railway history

5. what books have you really been wanting?
Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin novels other than Master and Commander, Post Captain, The Thirteen Gun Salute, and Blue At The Mizzen

6. what type of music do you like?
Most - but particularly Baroque and traditional. The traditional music of my Santa's home area would be reeeeeeally cool.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
Too many to think about!

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?
Ealing Comedies. I have a particular yearning for Passport to Pimlico, but that's only because I used to work for a company with a head office just over Vauxhall Bridge Road from Pimlico.

9. what is your t-shirt size?
Generally XL

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
Too many things!

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
Railway modelling (British outline "N" and "O" gauge; gardening; computing - but I do that for a living as well; history - see books above, and be prepared to be bored to death about my great grandfather if you ever meet me!

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
The only jewellery I normally wear is a watch and a wedding ring. But that's probably because I got bored with piercings, so I stopped wearing an ear ring, and I've never possessed any sort of pendants or medallions. Especially gold ones. On the other hand, I may go back to a single ear ring…

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like
I'm married with two kids!

Remember that "negative hints" such as allergies might also be helpful.
I get hay fever, and I can't stand things that skitter about quickly.

Love from el_punkoid_nouveau

OK, OK, I'm back...... Done my first Festival gig now so can breathe easier & stop practising for a while!

Dear, Lovely Santa.... Please accept my apologies for the antici       pation. Here's last year's answers hurriedly checked & edited (hope the answers are connected to the right questions):

1. Still Mid-40's

2. Definitely Female

3 & 9. Love Purple especially my Large MudChoc T Shirt, oh & Black, especially my new special order MudCat V T Shirt!

4 & 5. Have read all Terry Pratchett's (luckily I forget them quickly so I can read 'em again, good value huh?). Any science fiction or fantasy, dragons & wizzards, fiction, thrillers, crime etc. Second-hand is good, dogeared and with broken spines are perfectly acceptable, shows they're recommended!

6 & 7. Traditional Folk, a capella singing, contempory folk, female voice, classical (anything that's good, stuff you've done, anything of Catters, ones with good songs to try).

10 & 12. love interesting crafty earrings, pierced & dangly!!! Silver-tone seems to go best with my favourite colours. Seem to have accumulated stones from various places & beaches...

13. Love Cats, Chocolate, plants & trees, secret gardens, interesting places, earth powers, intuition & friendship.

Allergies yes, mainly alkaline-forming foods (have never eaten fruit so that's a definite negative). Luckily there aren't many other negatives in my life apart from the food!

Love the newspaper idea.....

Can't remember all the questions you're meant to answer. Please dont feel constrained by any arbitrary price limits imposed Mudcat bureaucracy, a fine old Martin D28 would be OK.
I remember there's something about jewellery. I'm a man, what kind of question is that?
I like anything specific to the Secret Santa, local traditional music, local history, local delicacies, stuff like that. Even more, I like to be surprised. Not to the point of a heart attck, obviously, so probably no live alligators more than siz feet long.

Subject: RE: BS: 2005--Secret Santa Hints
From: Bat Goddess
Date: 03 Oct 05 - 06:07 PM

I've finally had time to post this! (Sometimes it's nearly impossible to get things done on a moving planet.)

One overall suggestion is that I really like getting things from my Secret Santa's abode -- your music or that of your friends, local travel brochures, maps, rocks or shells, food -- even crumpled local newspapers used as packing material. (I have in my possession Divine's obituary in Spanish that was in a crumpled newspaper protecting something I had mailordered. )

1. what is your age range?
Let's see, I've been just about every age up to and including 56, but I'm doing research on ages I haven't yet attained.

2. gender?
Goddess, fer-pete's-sake

3. Do you have a favorite color?
Blue, green, blue green, purple, bluish purple, magenta. I avoid orange except in things I eat.

4. favorite authors/ type of book?
Adventurer Richard Halliburton (but I think I have all of the BOOKS he published -- interested in his periodical work, though), vintage (pre-1940) travel or exploration books, books on early gravestones or gravestone carvers (from your neck of the woods?), books about words and language, printing and typography, books about books.

5. what books have you really been wanting?
Alas, probably out of your price range, as well as mine.

6. what type of music do you like?
Everything from Louis Killen to Louis Prima, shanties and occupational songs to Manhattan Transfer and caberet.

7. what cds have you really been wanting?
Mudcatters' -- Jed Marum's, Big Mick's, etc. I have Rick Fielding's, Hissyfit, one of InOBU's. Or the Mudcat collections. I'm also looking for a CD (if it exists) of the 1970s recording (double LP -- which I have) of "Canto General" by Mikis Theodorakis, with the French National Chorus and Maria Farandouri. NOT the German recording which seems to be the only CD available.

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting?
Uh, Curmudgeon and I probably have the largest private collection in New Hampshire, USA.

9. what is your t-shirt size?
H for homungus (I like 'em roomy). I'm goddess-shaped, so 3X at least. I don't have (alas) a Mudcat T-shirt or sweatshirt.

10. do you collect anything? if so, what?
Maps, hippocampuses, rubber squid, rubberstamps and printing paraphernalia, skulls and interesting bones, rocks, shells, green men, mermaids. . . I think I collect collections.

11. what are some of your other hobbies?
Gravestone rubbing and research on gravestone carvers, learning how to cut slate, gardening, making bead jewelry, rubberstamp art, needlepoint.

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry?
Silver

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like.

Maybe later (I keep saying that) . . . if I think of anything. Oh, I'm a sucker for fancy scented bath stuff.

Remember that "negative hints" such as allergies might also be helpful.
I'm allergic to penicillin and blue mussels -- and carnations, not that I think this will really help my SS (Aw, no blue mussels!). And I really don't care for the color orange unless it's edible or a flower up against a blue or purple back drop.

Thank you, Art! I'd meant to track that one down and provide a link.

There are several folks each year who torture their Secret Santas by providing scant information. While the pleading for information can be entertaining at first, it becomes a sad thing after a while. Pathetic. Maudlin. The hand-wringing, the angst, the loss of joy in life. . . please, Santees, do your Santas a favor and say Something!
