Never heard of that. I have heard of people tearing the corner off of $2 bills (in the U.S.) for good luck, or to prevent bad luck. This may be one of the reason they discontinued $2 for quite a number of years. They've been back for a while now, but with limited circulation.

The basic reason for tearing of a corner of $2 bills was to help prevent confusion with the more-common singles. SOmething like that might have helped the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin.

Was it possibly done as a decorative touch? We used to burn the edges of paper to make it look old and as if made of parchment when playing around with announcements from drama club parties, etc.

It is to encourage fertility and ward off childless coupling.

Okay--I'm all ears [or eyes!]. What's the connection? What kind of cards, how are they transmitted, how far back, how'd it get started?

A story variously told of Peter Sellars, John Lennon and others; whoever it was received a request for a "singed" photograph from a fan. So, they duly received a photograph which had been scorched round the edges with a cigarette lighter.

Back came a letter which said, "Please send another photograph; the one I received was signed all round the edge."

When I was an investigator for Uncle Sam, I had a rather paranoid coworker who'd tear a corner off his business card as he'd present it. He said it was so nobody would take his card and impersonate him. I never thought anybody would want to impersonate Joe Offer, so I didn't bother.

I admit that I did singe the edges of a memorandum or two that I sent to Upper Management - as a sign of anger and disgust.

I like the idea of burning the edges of things.

I like to think of myself as a singer

yes it could be a happy thing or it could be of anger and disgust

I think it is the latter because the people that did it are out to lunch

Elementary, Dr. Watson.   It's to make an ash of the recipient!

Turning the edges of cards:

A turned-down corner indicated that the card had been delivered in person, rather than by a servant. Some elaborate cards had the words Visite, Felicitation, Affaires, and Adieu imprinted on the reverse side, on the corners. So whichever corner was turned up, one of those corners appeared and explained the reason for the visit.

Could someone have mistaken "turning" for "burning"?

to every thing, burn, burn, burn,
there is a season burn, burn, burn,
and a time for every purpose under heaven...

So how does one send e-mail with a burned edge to prove it originated with the real signee? I tried it on this one, and now the CD drawer wont close properly as it is all warped and twisted & has a funny smell - somewhat like myself :-)
I checked the IP on this post and found it didn't come from me.

Wait a minute - who says I don't have a sense of humour?
I do, but having people impersonate me makes me feel creepy.
