Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club From: GUEST,JK Date: 01 Nov 05 - 02:15 PM To get to EP'TH FOLK CLUB: Drive to the traffic lights at Epworth, there you will find the White Bear pub. With the pub car park on your right go down Station Road, away from the town centre for a few hundred yards until you come to a left fork in the road. Take this and you will find the OLD SCHOOL INN on your right a few yards down BATTLE GREEN. That is where we are.

Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 03 Apr 15 - 02:17 AM A rather good night. A bit thin on the ground, but songs from Goff, Danny, Richard, The Rookery's Uncle Brian, Albert, the rookery and yours truly. There are many musical styles and formats in folk and we heard quite a few of them from Geordie unaccompanied traditional ballads to Americana. As ever, Epworth delivers in providing good folk music with varying styles and I look forward to my fortnightly fix. It's a breath of fresh air in more ways than one. The rookery suggested an Irish theme some time. (We went to Wath last month and Dennis the Elder does themes.) Other than digging a hole in the car park, not sure what I'd do but my mates are a versatile bunch.... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 03 Apr 15 - 02:34 AM If The Memsahib ever gets a week at home, I have every intention of coming over with a bunch of songs to slit your wrists by. But don't expect anything Irish from me - I leave Irish stuff to Irishpersons, they do it so much better than a Yellerbelly! 👍😄 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 03 Apr 15 - 06:57 AM No fear of any theme other than our broad inclusive interpretation of folk, or acoustic roots as it is more fashionable to call it. Just an excuse the other night to relate my lame joke about digging up car parks. There again, if you look on certain websites all folk songs are "feckin' Irish" Looking for the words to John Connoly songs? Look under Dubliners. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 03 Apr 15 - 07:05 AM LOL! John finds it quite amusing that 'Fiddler's Green' is often claimed as a 'Traditional Irish' song! He certainly doesn't seem to lose any sleep over its mis-accreditation. It's the broad inclusiveness of Ep'th Folk that I enjoy so much - long may it be so! 👍 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 14 Apr 15 - 09:48 AM 'Tis tomorrow! Mowbray Arms, Epworth for free beer, a Taylor Parlour guitar (custom) in the raffle and a chance to watch the womens' beach volleyball practice session during the beer break. Wednesday is crap on the telly so come down and give us a Child Ballad instead.. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 15 Apr 15 - 03:40 AM Only twelve hours to go! Helplines are being set up for those two cannot contain their excitement and the beach volleyball players are limbering up. Everything you ever needed from a folk club from Musket sticking his finger in his ear to Andrew performing an Ed Sheeran cover via the rookery banging out trad on his banjo. All folky points in between by our increasing number of regular and not so regular troubadours. If you haven't got a guitar, no problem. We have a bloke who can make you one and another liable to sell you one. Mowbray Arms, Ep'th. 8.30pm. The secret code to get into the club room is to go to the bar and order an extra pint, saying it's for Ian. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 16 Apr 15 - 03:00 AM Well, I don't know about you, but I reckon the beach volleyball team should go all the way... Wonderful night. Turned into a bit of a session towards the end, thanks in no small way to Jim's powerful voice and dropping hints by shouting what key (he thought) his uke was in. Goff floated between John Connoly and trad via Guns n Roses, Danny picked out some good songs, Chris included one he penned himself, the rookery dug out some fine classics, Andrew carried on with his nack of singing songs you remember being played in folk clubs over the years, to fine effect. Albert counted four guitars and a uke he built being used in the room whilst providing vocals for Chris at one point and yours truly dug a few out of the archives. Awful lot of digging going on.. We arranged our input to the Epworth Music Day in June. (Sat outside the Mowbray all afternoon singing and playing. Sat inside The Mowbray all night singing and playing. Took some working out, I'll tell you..) Oh, I won the raffle. But when I got it home it wasn't the Taylor I bought a ticket for. Turned out to be a Martin copy, Collings or some such name. Tsk. Alternative reviews can be found via either the rookery or anyone who didn't turn up. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 16 Apr 15 - 04:33 AM It seems my sober and considered reportage on the Ep'th Folk Club activities, is being usurped by Musket's enthusiastic and knowledgeable commentary! I rather think the difference in style is due to his modest intake of alcohol, and my walkingdistancefromtheMowbray 4 or 5 pints. This means he can remember details of what went on where I just remember a rather blurry evening of joviality, conviviality, repartee and enjoyable music. Brilliant! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 16 Apr 15 - 04:41 AM I also thought it was a chance last night for Musket to see what a proper guitar is like to play- in my old job it was called a demo, and often led to a sale as the quality of the instrument becomes apparent through use! It'll be good for the guitar to be thrashed a bit as my playing is far too delicate to get the best out of it! (Joke) |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 16 Apr 15 - 09:29 AM You could have lent me the beach volleyball team instead. Anyway, I can confirm the build quality is OK. It took a padsaw, mallet and large drill to get the bugger apart. All that just to see what pre war scalloping looks like eh? Once I get it glued together again, I will be able to comment on the playability.... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 29 Apr 15 - 03:52 AM Tis tonight! Form an orderly queue and when you get to the bar, the rookery has JS cask and I drink Black Sheep. Tonight's raffle prize is a Northwood guitar (choice of two) and anyone who doesn't buy a ticket still has a chance of a banjo. Drop everything and get to The Mowbray Arms at 8.30pm. You know it makes sense. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 29 Apr 15 - 07:33 AM Northwood or Northworthy? I won't buy a ticket, I've already got too many expensive guitars! And my Lowden will be back from its Irish TLC-trip to Uncle George's tomorrow, complete with new truss-rod, fingerboard, nut, bridge-saddles and pickguard, so I'll be in heaven... Mine's a Coffee, BTW! 👍😄 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 29 Apr 15 - 11:01 AM The rest of us will be in Epworth. Like heaven but the beer's cheaper.... So the Lowden won't be back in time for tonight? Pity. You'll just have to bring one of those Yankee planks I suppose... Borrowing that Collings has seen me in two shops yesterday and today picking up D28s and wondering...... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 29 Apr 15 - 11:11 AM An attack of GAS is a powerful thing...!! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 30 Apr 15 - 05:43 AM A grand night was had by all concerned. Ian Laird made his long overdue debut as an acoustic guitarist, with a well written and played song explaining why he had eventually been forced to come, (by Richard and Me!) Mike made an escape from Bridge and played some great blues, Musket and Backwoodsman gave us some proper folk and Goff, Albert, Chris, Richard and Me did what we do with much joviality, enthusiasm, guitar chat and beer! Nice nice nice! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 30 Apr 15 - 07:09 AM Proper folk.. Not like those who live on the next street! Proper folk are those who get out of the bath to have a wee, aren't they? I had that attack of gas by the way. My own fault for cooking too many puy lentils at teatime. Reading the rookery' comment, it occurs to me that Mudcat doesn't ever seem to debate what is proper folk? Odd, that. Being a folk forum... 🙈🙊🙉 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 30 Apr 15 - 07:10 AM Aye, it were a corker! 👍😄 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 12 May 15 - 05:16 AM 'Tis tomorrow!!! Rehearsals shall be ongoing tonight at The Scarborough Arms in Tickhill, and the press are invited. Wednesday. Get it in your diary! Mowbray Arms, Ep'th. Only just over two hours from the centre of London* The Martin copy guitar is back in the raffle after I returned it as an unwanted gift, and we know a bloke who can remove the Collings sticker off the headstock and replace it with one that looks like Martin** Get there early, tonight's code word to get in is "and put a pint of Black a sheep on the tab for Ian, please Landlord." *Via Kings Cross, Doncaster Train Station and Dave's Taxi of Belton. ** From a distance. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 12 May 15 - 07:21 AM Aww shucks, I'm CTB again (Memsahib is in Amsterdam this week), so I won't experience the unbridled joy of buying Musket a pint! Won't make it next time either, for similar reason. Note to self...Must Try Harder. 😄 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 12 May 15 - 10:11 AM It is unbridled joy, you must try it some time...... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 13 May 15 - 11:05 AM Less than five hours to go. Can you bear the excitement I wonder? I can't. I'm running round in circles holding my groin. It it helps, there's a rumour Martin Carthy, Martin Simpson and Slash might be popping in to do a song or two, (depending if we can fit them in or not.) The dress rehersal in Tickhill last night went well, by the way. Hopefully get my costume back from the cleaners in time. Sod all on the telly. Get yourselves over to Ep'th instead and buy Musket a pint. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 13 May 15 - 12:43 PM Grrrrrr...stop tormenting me! 😉 |

Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 14 May 15 - 03:23 AM You been hacking into my diary? I'm "daarnn Souf" Sunday night. You both missed a great night. I'll leave it to the rookery to give the details this time but lots of good music. Who'd have thought all three would have turned up eh? 😎 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 15 May 15 - 12:51 AM Hey, musicians......check this violinist/fiddler out.....(Just had to post this ...couldn't wait...) ENJOY! GfS |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 15 May 15 - 07:33 AM Not bad Goofus, but he'd struggle to get a turn at Epworth. We are a rather discerning lot. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 15 May 15 - 09:05 AM He's good...but is it f*lk? |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 15 May 15 - 02:29 PM Folk seem to like it. Meanwhile I've got a violin for sale. Still. Nice to see Goofus above the line. I'll tell the alleged greyhound his friend called. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 16 May 15 - 04:52 PM Backwoodsman: "He's good...but is it f*lk?" The roots of this song, and dancers, are in Jewish/Russian FOLK...the dancers are the modern folk dance company Frikar. Just to answer your question. Not everything 'folk' revolves around the UK's culture. GfS |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 17 May 15 - 02:38 AM Ah but it's nice to have a culture... Plenty of Americana at Ep'th. Every other Wednesday. Discounts for ex colonials. |

Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Banjo-Flower Date: 18 May 15 - 06:07 PM I'll even let thee buy thee own ale gerry |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 19 May 15 - 03:17 AM Yeah, but banjologists can have their uses, even if only to get the beers in... Use this opportunity to promote thy session Gerry. You never know, some of the hundreds we turn away at the door in Ep'th might sate their musical appetite at your place? At the very least, the rookery and I have thought about saying eyup one night. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 19 May 15 - 03:24 AM You should, Musket - a very enjoyable session, good people, good music. No idea what the beer's like, but the coffee's decent! 😳 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 19 May 15 - 03:33 AM Any road. The rookery has failed re reporting last week so I might as well recall.* A night for quality rather than quantity. A few regulars on holiday or CTB. The rookery was in fine form, Richard is expanding his style of playing to great effect, Mike escaped bridge two sessions running and gave a masterclass in blues guitar, noting the 100 years since the birth of Robert Johnson and finished off with an excellent Rev Gary Davis number. "Young" Ian (as opposed to yours truly the teenage Ian) came back after his debut last time and gave us a couple of songs that took us back a bit. Danny was his evergreen self. A bloke whose name I forget (😳) gave us a couple of nice songs with his new guitar. He has been a couple of times so it isn't good enough I forget his name, sorry. Jim brought his banjo out and led us in some excellent jamming and yours truly remembered for once to do a MacColl number for his 100th birth year and otherwise made everyone put up with musical Mills and Boon. There. Didn't hurt. *I am supposed to be getting the website tickety boo but to date have managed to crash it so no bugger can get on it.... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 19 May 15 - 11:17 AM I hear a whisper that the Mowbray has closed and Shaun has escaped......... it was shut Sunday lunchtime and last night so I fear we may be hoop jumping again, or pub jumping till it all settles down! Watch this space for more exciting developments! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 19 May 15 - 11:34 AM Oh dear, bad news! Awaiting news with breath fully bated! 👍 |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 19 May 15 - 02:13 PM With bated breath? That reminds me of a song I used to know with the lines ; With bated breath, the dean undressed The vicar's wife to lie on He thought it crude to do it nude So he kept the old school tie on The rookery and I will volunteer to tour the local pubs to ascertain a back up. That's two gaffers in a row done a runner at The Mowbray. Perhaps the next one might keep the cask beers a wee bit better? Epworth Music Day could be interesting, a venue down.. Still. The Wheatsheaf, 300 yd from Chez Musket reopens soon. Always nice to get a pint without having to ring Daves Taxi. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 19 May 15 - 04:30 PM When is Epworth Music Day? Who is allowed to play at it? Just askin.... |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Rookery4 Date: 19 May 15 - 05:35 PM Epworth Music Day Last year we had a most enjoyable afternoon singaround/playaround at the Mowbray, and hoped to do the same this year- but..... 1. They booked the Mowbray for acts all day- but we could have a folk club in the evening. 2. Shaun said we could have an internal folk club all day! 3. Shaun seems to have abandoned ship! It's all up in the air again! |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Backwoodsman Date: 19 May 15 - 05:53 PM Mmmmmm.....more bated breath then! I only asked because I'd heard it being discussed at the club, but no-one asked if I had any interest, so I'd assumed it was invitation-only. Thanks for the info. |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: Musket Date: 20 May 15 - 08:14 AM No mate. Just the folk club running as per what we hope. All invited once we know what the hell it is anyway. Some have been invited to perform elsewhere at the festival anyway and some forgot to get back to the organisers when they asked him to do a turn. 😳 So that's me off the festival list for good.... Whoops |
Subject: RE: Epworth Folk Club PermaThread From: GUEST,Thumb Strummer Date: 22 May 15 - 04:22 PM Was passing through Ep'th last night around tea time, Mowbray was still shut. Does anybody know what's going on yet? Musket, bloke with new guitar is called Graham. I probably didn't tell anybody my name though so don't feel bad about it. |
