Funny, the Conservative candidate in my riding is an Indian immigrant and he only got 25% of the vote (probably cause he was "not from around here") the Liberal that was elected by 50% of the bogoted vote is a member of a local good old boy network....

Yeah. I like minority governments. It forces those damned political parties to actually listen to each other for a change. A majority government is just a temporary (and nonviolent) dictatorship pretending to be a democracy.

And for the first time in the history of Canada, the agenda is controlled somewhat by what is termed the "west", that is, anything east of Ontario.

Although, the Tory sweep of the west was mitigated somewhat by an upsurge in the NDP votes in urban areas of BC. Voters in BC are even more cynical of the Liberal Party than those in the "east". Provincially, the Liberal party in BC is a coalition of former members of the Conservative, Liberal and Social Credit Parties.

Having seen first hand what such a coalition can do, a lot of the Liberal vote is parked with the NDP, even in Federal elections. Despite the threat of the dreaded Tories, some of that vote was not shaken this time around.

The next 18 months or so should prove interesting to watch, while the Liberals and Conservatives work hand in hand at a Federal level.

And here's a simpler way to express it: 64% of the Canadian voters did not vote Conservative. You can figure it out easily enough from there...

The Conservative Party is the only party in Canada that is ever likely to endorse a "pre-emptive war" by the USA. And maybe not even they will...

Pre-emptive war is illegal and criminal, and we know it.

Larry, you must understand how politics works in Canada. Here are the percentages of the popular vote in yesterday's election:

In terms of popular vote, the Conservatives had 36 per cent support compared with 30 for the Liberals, 17 for the NDP, 10 for the Bloc Quebecois, and 4 for the Green party.

Now...of those 5 parties, they can be described this way:

basically somewhat conservative in nature - Conservatives
basically somewhat liberal in nature - Liberals
socialist and very liberal in nature - NDP
provincial and strictly regional in nature - Bloc Quebecois (a one-issue outfit that wants Quebec to be controlled strictly by the French)
extremely liberal in nature - Green

So, the fact of the matter is that abut 36% of the Canadian public tends to be conservative, politically speaking, at this time...since the only party that IS conservative is the Conservatives.

That's normal here.

The fact that they won the election had nothing whatsoever to do with the war in Iraq or any war anywhere else. It had to do with the fact that people were sick and tired of a very old and worn-out Liberal administration that's been in power far too long, grown fat and lazy, and has a totally lacklustre and uninspiring man leading them (and he is now going to step down). The Liberals simply got burnt out, that's all. It's not that they governed all that badly, relatively speaking....or all the well either...they just were there too long.

The vast majority of the Canadian public wants nothing to do with the war in Iraq or the War on Terrorism, and it did not influence this election.

Only roughly one third of this public ever is inclined to hold what would be termed a "conservative" viewpoint in the USA. That's why we have five parties here, and only one of them is truly conservative. ;-) Under that circumstance, that party only needs about 34% of the vote to secure a minority government (in which case it must compromise with some other more liberal party in parliament to get legislation passed). That 34% does not represent the prevailing mood of the Canadian public.

The conservatives win in this country only when the Liberals have been in power so long that everyone is sick of them...or when the Liberals screw up and pick a really lousy leader who has no charisma (that's been known to happen on occasion, and it did recently).

If there were only 2 parties in this country, the conservatives would never be able to win any election unless they simply stopped being "conservative" (in the more recent American definition of the word).

This populace does NOT approve of the war in Iraq, unless you call about 20-30% nationwide support "approval".

This populace is profoundly cynical about the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, and the USA's foreign policy...but there doesn't seem to be any way to avoid them, does there? We're stuck with all 3 of them, so we shrug and deal with it as best we can.

Let's put the Canadian election in perspective.   The lead story in the USA (at least on ESPN) was Duke beating Tennesee for the number one spot in Womans College Basketball.   I am sure the newspapers carried the Canadian election somewhere in their papers.   Personally I think its about time to have a leader from western provences to represent the entire country.

The most interesting thing to me about this election:   The three countries most opposed to the war in Iraq:

France, Germany, Canada.   All three prime ministers were kicked out in the next election. (Chirac replaced himself due to low popularity)

The three countries who supported the war in Iraq:

USA, Great Britain, Austrailia.

All three leaders win their reelection.

How could that happen if the world is so opposed to the war in Iraq? Even did heart liberals would have to admit that it is rather bizarre.

Well, it rained on election day here in Vancouver.

What's new. It has rained 35 out of 36 days.

A couple of days ago, a friend remarked that it was a beautiful day.

I looked up at a slate grey sky and decided that, by now, anytime it wasn't raining, it was beautiful.

We're very optimistic in Vancouver. You have to be.

We're also very balanced; politically. One-third each party.

Amazing!

And here is my parody of that song, telling the tragic tale of a band of expatriate American hippy draftdodgers who spent a number of years avoiding the Feds in Canada, but were eventually doomed by their yen for warm weather and Mexican marijuana....

Barrett's Bordermen

It was the year of 1976
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
Clive Barrett said "Boys, let's up and go
They've got much better weather in Mexico!"
    CHORUS:
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Clive Barrett was a hippy from New York State
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
He was tall and dark and smelly and weird
Had a colony of weevils in his beard
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

We bought an old school bus for 25 bucks
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
She was a horrible mess, what a sight to see
But the engine started when he turned the key
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Clive Barrett rolled a joint full of Lebanese hash
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
It was long and fat and heavy as clay
To smoke it took nine of us three whole days
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

On the fourth day we crossed the Ohio State line
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
We hadn't gone a mile when a traffic cop
Tried to pull the bus over and make us stop
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Clive Barrett pulled hard to the left and swore
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
The old bus gave a shudder and a shake and a pitch
And threw that officer in the ditch
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Down Interstate 80 at a hundred and ten
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
With 25 cop cars howling round
We made a run for the crossing outside Youngstown
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

We could see the level crossing half a mile ahead
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
There was a westbound freight out of Portland, Maine
Clive Barrett said "I'm gonna beat that train!"
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Fat Freddy gave a yell when we hit the rails
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
The old bus blew a tire and spun half around
As the train bore down with a rumbling sound
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Poor Phineas was the first to go
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
When the train tore through with a terrible squeal
And ground him up in the driving wheels
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Then the train derailed like an upturned whale
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
20 chemical cars full of high grade fuel
Came tumbling down around us poor fools
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

A big flatcar fell like the hammer of God
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
Killed Flo and Eddie and Flatface Fred
And decapitated Panama Red
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Fat Freddy make a break for the exit door
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
20 cops opened up from a stand of trees
And filled him full of holes like a big Swiss cheese
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Then Freewheelin' Frank made a dash for the woods
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
An Ohio State chopper on a strafing run
Blew him clean in two with the gatling gun
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Then the train blew up with a deafening roar
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
Clive Barrett got cooked like a big french fry
I lost all my hair and both my eyes
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Now Fat Freddie's Cat is in Mexico
(How I wish I was in Moncton now...)
He was the only one to escape the wreck
I wish I had him here now, I would wring his neck!
God damn them all! I was told
We'd smoke up on Acapulco Gold
Lie around like bums and toast our friends
Now I'm a broken man in Ohio State Pen
        The last of Barrett's Bordermen

Since Mudcat is a music site, how about this {re}post from that dailykos Canadian election site

{with apologies for the blashemy}

"Okay, Pirates

I will now reveal the Secret Canadian National Anthem.

Oh, the year was 1778
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
A letter of marque came from the king,
To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen,

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
would make for him the Antelope's crew

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight,HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
She'd a list to the port and and her sails in rags
And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

On the King's birthday we put to sea, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
We were 91 days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

On the 96th day we sailed again, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four pounders we made to fight

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

The Yankee lay low down with gold, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

Then at length we stood two cables away, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
Our cracked four pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side, HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the Maintruck carried off both me legs

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

So here I lay in my 23rd year,
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
It's been 6 years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers. "

"swiftly flowing river" is also poetic...

What's the Cree word for "freedom"?

And will Canada have less of it with a Conservative minority government?

Sounds nice, is nice in the summer, but those winter winds make Saskatchewan miserbly cold in the winter.

It's also very, very flat, like Kansas. As my sister once said you can look out into the horizon in Sasketchewan and actually see the back of your head.

Yes, the USA neocons will cheer...but Canada will never be conservative enough for those guys. A conservative minority government, by the way, will be required to make deals with one of the other parties in order to get legislation passed. That should be interesting.

"Saskatchewan" ="Where the rivers meet". .

Its meaning is a poetic as its sound.

Although I thought that the rivers met at the Point in Pittsburgh.

The province's name, pronounced locally as "sus-KATCH-uh-wun"    comes from the Saskatchewan River, whose name comes from its Cree designation: kisiskâciwani-sîpiy, meaning "swift flowing river".

Although I've read that in Canada, the Conservative party is not the same as the USA Conservatives, {and especially not like the neocon Bush branch of that party}, the American Conservatives will be cheering over a Canadian Conservative win.

I don't want the neocons to have anything to cheer about.

And you're right to Be aware of those electronic Lie bold machines.

And may I say I just love the word "Saskatchewan".

It has such a lyrical sound. What does it mean anyway?

Looks like it will be the Conservatives to me, Azizi. They've been out in the cold for, I think 13 years it is...

About time to give them a kick at the can, I guess. If they screw up badly, they will get killed in the next election. (We don't have computerized Diebold voting machines here...it's all verifiable on paper ballots.)

If I see them pass new legislation to bring in computerized voting machines, though, I will get really nervous.

Though I don't live in Canada, I'm interested in what party wins that election.

Voting results should start showing at 10 p.m. EST at this
official result site: Elections Canada;

And here's a dailykos blog with some pre-10PM results from some Atlantic provinces {technically illegal} as well as commentary:

Rain again, the normal state of things, shouldn't affect anyone here......

Not bad here today. Periods of light snow beginning late afternoon. Shouldn't affect too many voters. I glanced at the weather warnings at EC's website and just some high winds in spots. Looks like the weather might be good for most voters.

Anyone got any poor weather?

I did note that there are warnings out for high winds in south and central Alberta late in the day... hehehe.
