I opened the first window yesterday: behind it were the three kings (Albert, BB and Freddie). Can't wait to see what other 'Catters find behind subsequent windows, perhaps even an Ass called Humphrey...?

Considering all the windows being opened, is "advent" merely short for "add ventillation"?

Could someone help clear the air on this for me (in a single bound)?

Meanwhile, could we devise a special calendar for Emma B (my candidate for Rook-ee Of the Year) as seen from the INSIDE of her windows with four-and-twenty black birds of various sizes and species doing different zany seasonal antics outside each one until all windows and possibilities are "tapped out"?

....Or is that considered thread drift?

Dec. 1- Look in this one! A full-up Holy-Day Inn manager talking of financial "in-stable-ity" to some folks with with strange yellow circles around their heads.

Dec. 2-...and The Donkey They Rode In On--The fabled "Ass Of Peace".
(Note lack of yellow circle)

Dec.3- A dockside market view of the legendary Ethel Mermaid who figured in the first Christmas shopping spree. The other two presents can be found anywhere, but for Myrrh (antiquated spelling), you have to go to the source.

Dec.4- Frank, looking all insensed about something.

Another day, another window in my calendar! I'd have thought Mudchat editions would have nothing but doors.....

CRE-E-E-E-E-E-E-EAK! ("Welcome to Inner Sanctum")-Aaah, I've got it open! Here it is!...

Now let's take a look......

Dec.5- "A Mall (And Its Night Visitors)". Gonna find out who's Menotti or nice, I guess. Written as an attempt to convert kids to opera (A Grand YOUNG Opry?), it didn't make them stop screaming, but it made some at least scream on key. Treetops may glisten, but children DON'T listen! Still on some folks' Classical "Chopin- Liszt", though.

(Yeah-Old Joke, the last one...I know! But it fits, which is more than I can say for a lot of your presents!)

I have both, and today found a shop selling Advent candles so have stocked up for the next 4 years!

It was 4 coathangers and lots of FLAMEPROOF tinsel....
See here and click to play.

We had our own version in church, made from a cross piece of painted wood with holes wide enough for candles drilled partway through. We gave them up when we got a faulty candle. There was an air pocket all down the wick and it burnt down in about 3 minutes, setting fire to the holder. Now we have metal chandeliers!

Sunday before last our vicar was preaching his sermon about the Advent Crown. For some reason he decided to lower the tone by constant references to "Four Candles". The first time it was funny. The second time people looked round to see the reactions of others. The third time people were looking to see who didn't get the reference to the Two Ronnies.
After that it became somewhat repetative!

JOSEPH!

Relegated over the years to being the "Co-Star Of Bethlehem" and humbled in the Carol where THE LORD gets Mary's cherry, he was always an Unsung (Unless you view "What Child Is This" as Joseph's Carol) Hero to me. Rome never officially designated him as such, but to me he served as The Patron Saint Of Stepfathers back when I very much needed such guidance, so to honor him in my heart, a much needed....

HAIL JOSEPH!!!!!!!!!

Dec 7) A "Jap Zero"?

A reminder I guess of a defining moment in American life that defined our parents' generation, and by doing so, ours. It redefined our lives is so many ways great and small, but it occurred to me, after thinking how old and tired I felt after working 11 hours today, if it wasn't for Pearl Harbor, some of us might have even been a few years OLDER than we are today. There's that unnatural sibling gap in there. So now I may feel a bit younger, but I still feel still feel a great sorrow for this day and all its countless ramifacations. With tomorrow's window I may be happier and back in Bethlehem, but today is for reflection.

We'll see.....

From: Severn
Date: 08 Dec 05 - 08:56 PM

Liz got a silver star (from The Star Club, Hamburg?) for John in HER window. I Wonder what's in mine?...

Dec 8)Three Ships!

I always wondered what the ships had remotely to do about anything when I was a kid, because I didn't remember any Bible references in Sunday School, and hence, never really cared much for the carol. Then I heard Roberts & Barrand's version with their Nowell Sing We Clear ensemble, that was collected from a Humber fisherman. In this version, the three ships were carrying "crawns" (skulls) of the Three Wise Men as "relics" to be stored at "Koln-Upon-Rhine" (The Cathedral at Cologne), back in the days when churches had to have Holy "Authenticated" relics on display to attract pilgrimages to festivals or Holy Observances(I guess that's what passed for tourism in those days)and there was a great trade in uch artifacts. Where are they now, in musty cathedral basements somewhere? If anyone has any confirmation that said skulls actually reside there, I'd be curious to see the information, so please post. It makes more logical sense to me (the best kind!) even if it's a fabrication, PLUS I like the song better.

(It's on "Hail Smiling Morn" Golden Hind Music GHM 102)

Since it was a one-crawn-per-one-ship arrangement, I assume they were dealing with Union contracts even back then.

I used to do the song at sings with a lengthy intro about all this, but realized if I cut out all the talk, I could bill it as "I Saw Three Ships In Half"!

"Bye, Bye, Bye" until tomorrow.....

Dec 10) No chocolate yet here either, but today I found a nut confection in the shape of Christ. So THIS is a Pecan Divinity!
All those years while driving through the American South, we never stopped at a Stuckey's, which by their signs out front, seemed to be the chapel of choice where they went to worship these things. I was also told they spoke Pecan-ese and all the waitresses were named Praline. I don't see any Stuckey's any more, but there was a time before the Interstates were built that they were all over the likes of US Rte.1 and 301.

"Pray-Le-e-e-en! Honey is that Yoo-oo-oo?" Definately sounds like one of Chuck Berry's girlfriends of uncertain age.

It looks like Mac, actually. "Tis sweet To Be Remembered" is not a carol, but a noble sentiment nonetheless. It'll do just fine. Scotty's probably home with Lulu Belle, and Chubby The Wise Man is off fiddling around somewhere, and they'll make their presents known eventually.

Dec 14) Jonathan "Round John" Verjun, the fat ugly kid who ran the stable at the Holy Day Inn lost what could have been his claim to everlasting fame when they misspelled his name in the song. He showed Mary to her quarters (as originally noted in the text) and then left them and went home to vanish into pimply obese adolescent obscurity. Never got his own animated cartoon or nothin'!

Dec 18) A Tropical Hershey Bar!

OK, who's the wise guy?

For any of you who have never had the pleasure, Tropical Hershey Bars were made to be issued to soldiers in hot climates. They don't melt in your hand, they don't melt in your mouth, they don't melt under a blow torch. Dope smokers over there would complain that they would dry out your mouth so bad that if you didn't have any liquid around you, eating one when stoned could fataly turn the inside of your mouth to chalk. (I personally got to watch this happen to someone I was playing cards with--somebody found a canteen just in a nick of time to save him. It wasn't a pretty sight.)

We would give all of ours away to the local children and I suspect they made bomb proof bunkers out of them, bunkers that are probably standing today.

I've seen them for sale at camping supply stores. Definately for survivalists only. I only ever got as far as one bite. Our Major was the only person I served with over there who ever claimed to like them.

A cruel joke from whomever in the Cat sent me the calendar. (Not my Secret Santa). I'll have to check the wrappings again for clues.....

Sounds as if they were related to 'Compo Rations'... a cruel joke played on the British Army by the Catering Corps. These pre-packed "convenience" foods were to be used as a last resort or under combat conditions. I tried some once. Just the once.

There was a misbegotten creature who really enjoyed the biscuits (shaped like cork mats and about as tasty) but he was a dog and they gave him terrible smelly flatulence. As he was the Major's dog, and the Major was a twat of the first water, we gave the dog lots of these biscuits, usually round about afternoon teabreak on a Friday, when we knew we wouldn't be seeing the animal for 2 days.

I'm gonna go somewhat sentimental on you, so here's a dreamy picture postcard pose of sorts in today's window.....

Dec 19) A couple from down the block....

For this purpose and this season I shall refer to them fondly as "The Fideleses, Adeste and Semper". She's sitting in an apartment decorated for the Holidays, longingly staring at a soldier's picture on the piano. Actually, it's not a real wooden upright, just his Fender Rhodes keyboard. He'd told her that it was just a short commitment he was involved in, a weekend warrior type thing, but he's been overseas for a few years now and still doesn't know when he's coming back. So she waits.

Hang in there Desty, I realize the Holidays will be extremely rough on you. I know I never got around to one of his band gigs to hear him play that thing like I'd always said I would, but believe me it's still on my priorities list, higher now than ever, for when he gets back and resettled. I promise.

...and for all those of you out there, for each time you end up singing out "O, Come All Ye Faithful", I hope somebody, in some way shape or form, shows up.

That's enough for today....

Dec 20) At Long Last--A Shepherd

Not that I really cared to see one, as all the others opening their calendars on this thread have had a severe overload of them and have already written just about everything about them that it's possible to write. So it turns out that I have little or no use for this guy.

So my question is THIS, do I have to recognize HIM as My Lord? I have always gladly given that title to the Baby Jesus, but since have had this guy I don't need thrust upon me unwillingly, he seems to fit the definition of The Lord, as "My Shepherd I Shall Not Want". And since he's not German, I just can't send him off to the pound....

A true Theological Dilemma here....

Dec 23)MARY

First off, what did she really look like? The woman of a million (at the very least) faces, at one time, way back when, one painted a picture of a woman with a yellow circle around her head, and it was sure to end up in a gallery somewhere. Beacuse even if they all look different, they all were divinely inspired, or else they wouldn't all be in galleries, right? That gal's in a lot of galleries! Are all the pictures of Our Boy Joseph all hiding, off hanging in boileries somewhere? But I digress......

Secondly, What made God choose Ms. Mild (Judging form all the folksongs and carols, that was her last name) over all the other women out there? Sure, lineage was important, the David connection and all, but surely she wasn't the only candidate. Was there a lineup, a pageant? God had to go for looks, if only to assure that His Son would LOOK charismatic, so what were the final criteria other than purity of soul and a significant other willing to go along with the scheme? Was God a leg, tit or ass man, or was there something in her face, eyes or smile that clinched it? It may sound crass, but there had to be breeding considerations, like breeding dogs or horses.

So here's our poll for the day:

Which painting of The Virgin Mary do you think most favors her?

It still amazes me that despite all the evidence and the lineages given in the Bible, Mary never looks Jewish. She's always pale white, blonde haired, dressed in blue and with a neat little face.

I know there are pale white, blonde Jews out there, but in Judea?

We're coming down to the wire now! With all that shaking for chocolate, the last big door ar the bottom has stayed closed. Here goes.....

TA DA!!!!!.....

Dec 25)THE BABY JESUS!

There's a million pictures of the Christ Child, too, but it would be harder to repeat the poll we did on Mary as the child is pretty well wrapped up-"dressed to swaddle" as they say. I can't tell the eye color on this one, there's no hair visible, and in the poor stable lighting it's hard to tell whether the skin is that of your average Medeterranean Jew of that area or the blond blue-eyed savior of many later paintings, whether deeply felt, or merely....felt. Those yellow circles around the heads don't really give off that much light.

I tend to like it that way, as there's not enough showing to cause an argument that would eventually lead me to go off in a huff and form yet another sect, cult, cell, denomination or club based on my own interpretation.

"Unto us a child is born...Unto us a child is given"

I'll just have to go with that and rejoice the best I can accordingly.

Best of The Season and The Coming Yeat and The Coming Life and The Coming Afterlife, should it come, to all!

Speaking as a postal worker, if he comes again, I'd hope he'd bring Armageddon, as I'd hate to do all this TWICE a year!

....and there are job openings for people with close to 25 ideas (when in doubt, pad it with shepherds and chocolate) to do this next year.

So they heard me exclaim as I rode out of sight.....

"REST YE MERRY, AND LET NOTHING YOU DISMAY!"......

Shall I go from thread to thread or to PMs or websites collecting money for the funeral, as in days of old? Shall I hold a Wren Fest?
Shall I give the spare ribs to the poor, as John The Red Nose suggested? Or shall I just throw the wren in the nearest trash can afterward and send all moneys to Max?

I may not get any money here in America--not even enough to cover my possible bail expenses. Oh well, here goes!....
