Subject: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Wincing Devil Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:38 PM I sent out an email a while back, at the end is my usual sigblock: Vince Wilding, AKA Honest Jock Matlow Splotch, Fuzzee and Minnie's Majordomo --- http://www.ILoveMySphynx.com Vince (at) VinceWilding (dot) com --- http://www.VinceWilding.com Piratical and reenacting stuff --- http://www.WincingDevil.com Just call me "Popo"! --- http://www.CallMePopo.com MSN: vwilding AOL: WincingDevil Yahoo: Wincing_Devil Randomly generated pithy tagline goes here |

Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Wincing Devil Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:44 PM OOPS Hit submit too soon! The Random Tagline in question was: Someone replied, saying that it was offensive. When I asked her to explain why, she wrote back: "If you don't understand why the quote would be offensive to women, it wouldn't help for me to explain it to you." This is a direct cut and paste from the message! I thought understanding was the goal! |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Clinton Hammond Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:45 PM Your sigblock is too long |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: GUEST Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:46 PM Well, I think you have two answers: 1) I am sorry. 2) Tough shit. Choose, and then live with it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: MMario Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:50 PM hey - I don't care how long a sigline is if it's in text. so many people include graphicsa now that it take forever to download their messages. vince - I don't have a clue either - maybe one of the 'catters of a female persusion can explain why "God created cats so men could understand women" is offensive. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Wincing Devil Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:53 PM Clinton: The rule of 3 line sigblocks went out with 2400 baud modems and 20MB hard drives. Mine is very conservative (oops! the "C" word) by todays's standard. I've seen War & Peace sized sigblock on some usenet postings, where the sigblock was longer than the posting. (check out alt.fairs.renaissance) Still, I am greatly befuddled by her reaction. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Jeri Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:53 PM She's offended because your quote refers to women. She can't explain it because either she doesn't reallly know why she's offended, or she just figured out she was being stupid and she'd sound even stupider trying to explain. Point out that the main thing with cats is you can never figure out why they act the way they do, and she just gave you a nice example. If this is someone you have to be nice to, explain that cats behave regally and dignified (forget to mention they lick their assholes) and are self-sufficient (forget to mention they need somebody who can operate a can opener) and good judges of character who do not suffer fools lightly (forget to mention that fools with canopeners or cashmere laps are just fine). |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: JohnInKansas Date: 09 Dec 05 - 01:55 PM Taglines generally are useless and mildly offensive, but with her reply I think I'd have been inclined to write her back and say "I thought you meant it was offensive to cats." - But I'd never actually do that. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:09 PM Why don't you explain to us what you mean by the tagline. Please. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: SINSULL Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:11 PM I'm not offended but I don't really understand it either. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Tannywheeler Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:15 PM Give it up. Trying to explain "WOMEN" is like trying to herd cats. We'uns is all in different directions. Part of our nature and our charm--admit it. Tw |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: MMario Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:19 PM well, yeah - which is why "God created cats so men could understand women" both makes sense and is funny...but how is it offensive to women? |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:21 PM I usually never read the tag line. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Tannywheeler Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:24 PM Doesn't bother me a bit. Hubby still considers me the Opposite Sex. So, not all of us are offended. Tw |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:33 PM He may have meant apposite Tanny! G ☺ |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Wincing Devil Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:35 PM Tannywheeler has it closest, basically cats are mysterious, but we love them, women are mysterious, and we love them. As men who love cats and women, we don't understand either of them, but we're glad to have them in our world. But you can't say that in under ten words or so, so we have the pithy bon mot. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Bill D Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:38 PM being offended is a popular hobby these days..*grin*...Jeri is correct, John in Kansas has a good idea... |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Dec 05 - 02:43 PM There are more ways than one to skin a cat... |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 09 Dec 05 - 03:53 PM basically cats are mysterious, but we love them**, women are mysterious, and we love them. As men who love cats and women, we don't understand either of them, but we're glad to have them in our world. Seem to me you kept an awful lot of these premises to yourself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Ebbie Date: 09 Dec 05 - 04:22 PM I too had the idea that cats are mysterious and inscrutable but I have the opposite situation. The cat I have currently is altogether too human oriented. I've had cats in the past that were more like dogs (Siamese and part Siamese primarily) but this one is a short haired coal black cat (you know the type- he poses like a figurine) and is so attuned to human commands and plans it's almost scary. This cat is a 'rescue' cat (his owners discovered their younger son was allergic), 11 years old and in good health. I swear he knows when it's Friday night- and he is determined to go downstairs to join the group. He'll even lie across the top of the stairs so I can't sneak out. But if I say, "Stay", he meows bitterly. And stays. On the other hand, if at times I say, I'm going downstairs, do you want to go along? he's down the stairs like a shot. When he wants to go outside, if I say, Don't stay too long, he stays in sight and in about 10 minutes he comes back in the ajar door. If I forget to caution him he lopes across the yard and disappears into the underbrush of the adjoining vacant lot, and may be gone an hour. The other night I was in my recliner with him snuggled on my lap. As usual he put his front paws up at my throat. This time, however, he attached his claws a little too firmly into my skin and I moved his feet. He objected and put his feet back. This time I moved them and held them in my hand. He meows and puts his paws back and this time he digs in. I say, NO! and move his feet. He hisses. With the palm side of my finger I rap him on the nose and repeat, No. He growls. I rap him firmly. He jumps off my lap, and I think, Oh, no. Does this mean he will never trust me again? But he stands where he lands, his back to me. He thinks deeply. Then he mews and turns back to me. He jumps up and rubs his face under my hand. He snuggles, puts his paws up to my throat. The claws entirely retracted. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: katlaughing Date: 09 Dec 05 - 04:33 PM LOL, I've got one like that. I trim his claws, he gets pissed, then comes back to "love up." Don't forget, though, Siamese may seem more catlike and aloof, but deep down I have found them, time and again, to be the most sensitive and loving, in their own inscrutable way.:-) WincingDevil, maybe she was an atheist? Maybe it sould be "Darwin invented, etc." **BG** Jeri and JohninKS have it right, imo! |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: CarolC Date: 09 Dec 05 - 07:53 PM If cats were created to help men understand women, and you don't understand the woman who found your tagline offensive, it looks like the cats aren't doing the job they were created for, wouldn't you say? ;-) Maybe you should get a ferret... |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Wincing Devil Date: 09 Dec 05 - 08:28 PM I never said I understand cats! How can someone who ostensibly loves me, sink his needle-like teeth into my armpit, after using me for a chaise-lounge? Why I don't immediatley launch him into next Tuesday is beyond me. No. Instead, I hug him and say "No Splotch, Daddy is not a nibbly treat!". |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: jeffp Date: 09 Dec 05 - 08:30 PM I asked my wife if she was offended by the statement, and she said, "No, a pussy is a pussy." Nuff said. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: robomatic Date: 09 Dec 05 - 09:32 PM Two comments: About Madeline, my best friend was known to say: "Pet her, she purrs, pet her, she purrs, pet her, she BITES, slap her, she purrs." So was that a cat? If it is proper to use the tag line "God created cats so men could understand women" why ain't it also proper to say: "God created dogs so women could understand men" Hmmmmm? |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Don Firth Date: 09 Dec 05 - 09:51 PM Whoa! I'm not gonna get involved in this! Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Wincing Devil Date: 09 Dec 05 - 10:40 PM So is a "dog woman" as rare as a "cat guy"? When most folks see a strange cat, they say "isn't she pretty" and a strange dog "isn't he cute"? Cats are associated with females and dogs with males? Further meaning to the original tagline. Everyone should go to Taglines Galore and do a search on cats. I'm afraid to do a search on "women". |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Doug Chadwick Date: 10 Dec 05 - 04:45 AM Perhaps those who are so easily offended should be offered courses of de-sensitivity training. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Dec 05 - 07:21 AM I was always a dog lover, but now we have cats. Just the way life turns out I suppose. I don't understand one of my cats. Neither does Manitas. But I do understand that she will only piss on the bathmat if it is on the floor. He can't understand that if he doesn't put the bathmat down, she'll use the litter tray. The more time I spend with people, the more I like my cats. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Donuel Date: 10 Dec 05 - 09:39 AM I'm a cat lover who now has a dog. The dog is altogether way too obsequeous. If she could sing she would be singing... "I'm cute I'm cute oh boy oh boy I'm cute. So pleeeeze I beg you pleeeze, let me know, I'm so cute! A cat would simply stretch and purr... "sexy, don't you think" |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: Peace Date: 10 Dec 05 - 03:22 PM "God created dogs so women could understand men" Good line. Dog's philosophy of life: If ya can't eat it and ya can't f### it, piss on it. I don't see anything to be offended about. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offensive Tagline From: ranger1 Date: 10 Dec 05 - 07:38 PM I read somewhere that "women and cats are contrary by nature. Men and dogs had better get used to it." I remind Jason of this frequently, it keeps him on his toes. Personally, I agree with Jeri's assessment. |
