Since we have so many opinionated people here at the Mudcat I was wondering where you get the news that helps form your opinions ? What newspapers, websites, TV news programs - or whatever - is the source of the information you receive ? And what do you like about them ? Is there one you trust above all the others ?

Please feel welcome to tell us what you like about your own sources. Try to avoid trashing other peoples choices - there are plenty of other threads you can do that on. Thanks.

I generally get my news from the BBC (wireless, TV or website). I do not buy a newspaper. Although sometimes criticised by politicians I find it generally level-headed.

Mine comes from various sources, mostly considered liberal. Online Yahoo links to AP and Reuters, Truthout, subscribe to newsmagazines like Time, Newsweek and Liberal Opinion Weekly, national TV news like NBC, ABC and CBS, Jon Stewart, and the monologues of Jay Leno and David Letterman. I am an online subscriber to the Washington Post, the New York Times and often read the UK Guardian. I also subscribe to National Geographic and the Smithsonian magazines. From there on I pick up any kind of book or magazine that appears to expand on any subject in which I'm interested.

Most of the conservative view I get in books, rather than in magazines or on TV- I mostly can't stand to listen to them live. Some of the books I have trouble finishing- those written by Bernard Goldsomething, Noonan, even O'Reilly. I still have them in my house, in case I grow up enough to hold my nose.

Mostly the Wall St. Journal, though I'll read anything I run across--and I also listen to NPR and BBC reporting in the car. The Journal has the advantage of giving the Neanderthal Bushite view on the editorial page, while providing excellent reporting in the rest of the newspaper--as I've said before, often directly contradicting the editorial line--something not often found in newspapers.

I get mine by word of mouth and here at the Mudcat. I haven't subscribed to a newspaper for many decades. My main governing thought about most newspapers is that in order to subscribe to them you should first have a good fireplace or woodstove. Despite the attitude about newspapers, (and magazines, I might add,) I doubt I am any less informed about most of the important issues than anyone else. After all, if something important is afoot there will ivariably be someone from whom I will learn all about it. My favorite of these is the person who approaches and gasps, "Did you hear about what they're doing to the Truncated Tanglemouthed Topiary?" or "Guess what Baliacci did this week?" And then, not really caring what my answer might be or whether I indicate any interest whatsoever, they emit periodless sentences, the length of which would make any filibusterer proud, on (or approximately on) the subject. These people rarely travel in pairs or packs and yet a substatiation or refutation invariably fills the air soon thereafter from some formerly unrecognized quarter. As soon as the discussion between these folks is going at a brisk pace, I usually manage to make my exit, unnoticed. Of course this last part is much easier to accomplish here at the Mudcat.

News? Frankly, I believe that it is generally true that there are much better ways to spend your time than to contemplate the soothsayers of politics or the armchair generals of sports.

But that's just me.

With the possible exception of "Link TV" (which I am no longer able to get), I don't trust any of them. So whenever I read something I think is newsworthy from any source, I try to find documentation to either support it or refute it. My preferred sources of documentation are "the horse's mouth", so to speak, and in the absence of that, I try to get the story from as many sides as possible, and look for patterns of deception in all of them.

I get most of my news from National Public Radio and Minnesota Public Radio. It's what I wake up to, eat breakfast to, and listen to while I drive to and from work.

On my lunch break, I usually read the Wall Street Journal. I agree with Ron Davies' comments. I often wonder how the reporters keep their jobs.

I subscribe to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, but I don't read much of it. My wife reads a lot more than I do—she's quite the political junkie, and will call my attention to anything particularly interesting. We agree on most political issues. I trust her judgment. She tells me who to vote for in the primaries, and in the non-partisan local elections. Often, she's met the candidates herself.

My favorite columnist/author/commentator is Robert B. Reich.

the 'new thing' online is RSS feeds...a special form of 'page' that can be read by standalone programs...like specialized browser...or in your browser....I prefer stan alone...

then you go to places like this and pick & choose.

my regular one right now is GreatNews. There are VERY complex ones out there...that even put a ticker on your desktop...but I like just a simple way to edit categories and use them easily.

Every morning I glance at the headlines on Google News and maybe click on two or three. For something slightly enriched in what has turned out to be important & what has turned out to be true, I read the Washington Post Weekly, which comes in the mail. I don't always get thru it in a week.

I found that listening to the News was getting me down.

I arrived at a simple solution to my malaise. I entered all the dialogue out of the first 3 seasons of "Trailer Park Boys" into an audio data bank which then randomized said dialogue. When I want an update, I punch a button, and listen to five minutes of random dialogue from Ricky, Julian, Bubbles, J-Rock, Randy, Mr Lahey, etc...

That tells me all I need to know. Problem solv-ed. (as Detective Clouseau would say...)

I get most of my news from 3 radio stations run by the non-commerical Government funded Australian Broadcasting Commission
Our national broadcaster
Local Radio & Radio National & sometimes Newsradio, but the reception is not so good here for Newsradio.If I had a TV I'd also watch ABC. I also occasionaly get news from the ABC & BBC websites when there is something big happening, like the bombings in London last year.

Every weekday I skim thru our reputable broadsheet Sydney Morning Herald as we get it at work. If any colleague has the tabloid scandalsheet The Telecrap (no link there, cos you wouldn't want to waste your time looking at it) I skim thru cos it has Dilbert and a few other great comic strips.

Sunday I buy both the Sun Herald & sunday telecrap mainly for the cartoons & colour magazines.

I also get current news here. Mudcatters are a great source of what's going on in their area & further afield (London bombing again, Katrina ...)

Another source is back & occasionally current issues of Vanity Fair which I borrow from my local library.

BBC Radio 4 "Today" programme every morning - for me, it's the best way to wake up and start the day.
In the evening: BBC1 6 o'clock News and BBC1 Local News. Since we moved further away from London, we now get the East Anglia local news, which I love: there's usually a lot more positive,happy news stories in it than on the London local news.

I don't regularly buy any one particular newspaper. I choose between The Independent, The Times and The Guardian, depending on what articles they have in their features pages that day. The news is pretty much the same in each, and it's really the feature articles that I buy a newspaper for. If there is some really juicy (royal, political) scandal or "conspiracy theory" going on, I might occasionally go "down market" in my newspaper buying to read something a bit more lurid !

The Sydney Morning Herald every day. Common Dreams , a great source of breaking news articles from papers around the world. Haaretz for news from Israel, The Monthly for Australian current affairs, and listen to Australia's Radio National.

I don't believe there are any televised news sources which are completely free of influences which result in "slanted" reporting and/or editorialising. [North American "news" programmes are notorious for this---two [apparently empty] talking heads, usually one male, one female, yittering back and forth making trivia out of even the most serious of issues]. With the exception of BBC World News, even BBC is sinking into this asinine habit---and I have noted , since the Iraq-Kelly spat with Tory Blair,a seeming tendency to slanting news to conform with current propaganda requirements.
So---BBC World, the CBC [even given its harmless parochialism]
News papers--all online. I can think of no other country so poorly served in the matter of national press as is Canada!

I'm impatient with the news these days. I've had training in philosophy, Gestalt psychotherapy and sociology, to which I'd add some hard thinking.
The above have helped me to see , to a degree, what journalism and broadcasting are about, how they work, why they have the skewings they do.
Journalists, broadcasters and politicians (and much of the public) belong to the same world, and all get sneery of anything not already inside their world view.
It's useful to think about the processes of employing people for those areas. So journalists can't see some things, because if they could, they might not have been employed in the first place.
Journalists are always complaining about being criticised (oh, how defensive they get when criticised) on the grounds of "we're just the messenger". If that were really true, we'd only have/need one newspaper, designed to cater for all who are vaguely literate.
No, they're not. We've all heard of editors, so their has to be a selection going on. Do the public get to see editorial meetings regularly? i dawn't fink soooooooo. Many will have heard the phrase, "...went unreported in the west" and similar remarks.
Perhaps there are mudcatters who have been involved in news stories and thus have first-hand knowledge of any difference between their experience and what and how it was reported.
Reporters have agendas. I've read many times about journalists (and many broadcasters are journalists) turning up at some event, and when they aren't getting what they came for, just go away again.
News is often so fast that PREJUDICES of both journalists and the public have more of a chance to be encouraged than THOUGHT or KNOWLEDGE let alone WISDOM.
One neat recent example of omission. Melvyn Barg , in his excellent In Our Time series (BBC Radio 4,Thurs), did 45 minutes on the history of astronomy, and 45 on Isaac Newton, and managed not to mention astrology once. Not quite Hamlet without the prince, but close, given that astronomy arose out of astrology, and Newton was an astrologer too.
My point there is simply a way that the news media work. You'd only know about it if you were already relevantly informed (or were naturally suspicious), so the ill-informed (percentage anyone?) are vulnerable.
As a therapist, it is a bit of a sad sight hearing/reading a journo/caster/politico endeavouring, as they so oft do, to understand or at least explain a person in the news.

"Reporters have agendas". So true. As do, of course, editors. As you know-- (but not everybody does, it seems)--that's why it's important to look at the same news from more than one perspective--then make our own judgments. And to try to discern slant when we see it.

I listen to the CBC news on the radio, and read two daily newspapers: the Globe & Mail (national) and the Ottawa Citizen (regional). I don't watch television at all.

Journalism (of a sort) is my business, so I don't trust any of them much. I pay the closest attention to analysis and opinion articles.
