On 20JAN at 10:10AM, Art (who started this) Thieme wrote that I was in West London banging a machine. I have only this to say...

Art, it wasn't a machine. That's why I needed the condom!

Whew,

It finally happened. Looks like I'm no longer the father of the thread. Feels great to be out from under all that responsibility. But if I had a PAP test (to see who the father is) would my DNA give me away as failing to live up to my parental duties? Alas, I've now redeemed myself by putting in a semblance of a visit to my son.

Onward...

Nope, it don't give you away as living up to your "Pater" but more likely "Mater." However, the notion of you having a PAP smear gives question to whether you: 1. Are a female
2. Have had a double take photos for you
3. Take massive hormone shots
4. Are a woefully ignorant bachalor
5. Have serious communication problems with your wife
6. Are making a pun on "Pappy"

Okay, Big RiB, I read your bold faced message on the Condom I thread, so here I am, refreshing this one.

My son sent this to us yesterday. Such a wonderful man; such great use of the email system! Somehow, it seems appropriate to post it here. Since this thread already has such a reputation, I will not post a warning about the unseemly sexual nature of the following, which may not be suitable nor understood by those of tender years, or ummmm, ears!?

The Top 12 Things Uttered by Yoda While Making Love
12. "Ahhh! Yoda's little friend you seek!"
11. "Urm. Put a shield on my saber I must."
10. "Feel the force!"
9. "Foreplay, cuddling -- a Jedi craves not these things."
8. "Down here, I am. Find a ladder, I must!"
7. "Do me or do me not -- there is no try."
6. "Early must I rise. Leave now you must!"
5. "You know, this would be a lot more fun without Frank Oz's hand up my ass."
4. "Happens to every guy sometimes this does."
3. "When 900 years old you get, Viagra you need too, hmmmmm?"
2. "Ow, ow, OW! On my ear you are!"
1. "Who's your Jedi master? WHO'S your Jedi Master?"

One of my Mothers stories coming up:
My mother was a nurse in the last war working in the camp medical room not a hospital, usually condoms were issued by a male nurse to soldiers who had leave or three day passes but he was ill one weekend so one of the older female nurses said she would do it.
Now there were two boxes both the same size both filled with little brown paper envelopes one was prophylactives#1 troops for the use of,the other, finger stalls you can just imagine the reaction after that weekend.
Kat, calm down, come on get off the floor you can hurt yourself laugthing like that.

This is goona get real odd.

Once in the Boatyard days we would need to center a prop shaft for purposes of aligning the diesel engine and shaft tubes before welding the tubes to the ribs. The rubes would always distort so we came up with the idea of holding the shafts in place with a rigid but sacrifical substance and there by keep the shafts and tubes aligned before incerting the bearings into the shaft way. We chose Plaster of Paris because it would set quickly and we decided we could hold it inplace with balloons because they would allow the plaster to flow around the shafts before the plaster set up. Unfortunatly the openning was too small to pir the plaster in so some body suggested we get some rubbers. Remember this was 20 years ago and no one called them condoms then. I was sent to the drug store to buy them. They were kept behind the counter then and I had to ask this very cute and very 17 yearold highschool girl for a 12 pack of Trojans. She very non chalantly said " Ribbed or regular?" and with out thinking I replied, " I don't know which do you prefer?". She looked at me hard for a moment and then handed me the ribbed ones.

That this was brought up again and responded to really makes me upset. By now it should have been obvious to all that Art's original posting of the forerunner of this thread was to parody some of the somewhat vacuous threads we were having at the time ~~ what's your favorite _______ , what ________ do you prefer, etc? Trouble was, too many accepted it as serious.

Art has publicly stated several times (in so many words) that he regrets having done so.

There can be no value to continuing it now except to be hurtful. By now we ought to know better.

How do you feel about using a condom?
I have been under the impression that men are willing to use condoms, but at the same time they feel it is somewhat disappointing or less satisfing for them.
I know that spontaneity suffers, but I would like to know how others feel about this.

Dear Dale,

All right, at the risk of starting a flame war and losing friends, I'll be blunt as this is an area of conversation that I am most adamant about.

Does the word condom offend you along with matters sexual in nature. If that is the case why did you reply at all to such a tasteless thread? Do you view the countless other threads that have degenerated into double entendre and innuendo as equally as tasteless? If so I haven't seen your replies to them.

I don't reply to every thread I read because they may hold no interest beyond the first paragraph, they may be of a subject i know nothing about, or they may be of a topic that I don't approve of. Then I treat the thread like the TV, a movie, or a book I don't like. I turn it off, I leave the theatre, or I close the book.

My reply to this thread was a true incident from 20 years ago, it was real and it was funny. And it was also evidence of the human condition out there that some of us are ashamed or embarassed to admit exists. If you didn't like it I'm sorry, but I won't stop commenting because I'm afraid something I say may be taken baddly by a very few of very many.

Watch for my replies to threads and read them or don't. But if you don't because you disapproved of one reply, think of the others of which we may be inaccord that you will have missed.

Regards

Donald R. Meixner

Hypersensitivity (no condoms do not interfere with it) and political correctness are signs of a society in which too many people have nothing serious to do. It makes for a bland society, full of rancour, but devoid of spirit. I doubt if anyone is offended by such postings; but if they are, I am sure "we" would be ladies and gentlemen about it and appologise. The music is serious at times, the non musical threads I have to agree with Don, cause no harm nor bring disrespect to anyone. If you want to be too serious this is not the site to be so. For the most part this is an enjoyable group of people and should continue in that tradition. If you object to these postings I am sure the controllers of this site can erase them, but care should be taken not to erase the spirit of the fine people here. Sincerely, Aye. Dave

First, Don...Excellent post pardner, very nicely done.

Now to Dave, Bonnie, and some of the others who may be wondering........Last January or so, we got into what can only be described as "Boilerplate Threads." For many of us, it was a way of getting to know each other. Things weren't quite as loose then as they are now. They were along the lines that Dale described. Where do we live, what foods, what music, what age, married, etc. After awhile, even to an inveterate BSer they started to become tiresome and boring. Art Thieme, in his inimitable way, tried to show how ludicrous they'd become and started the forerunner of this thread. I suppose a few may have taken it seriously, but the majority used it to lighten the atmosphere and had a grand time with it. A few were offended and Art is a kind man and apologized for starting it, explaining it was just a way of stopping the boilerplate. But by this time the thread had taken on a life of its own! Additionally, some of us were having such a good time with it that it went "Platinum" so to speak. This was in no way the fault of Art, but it was the beginning of the BS/Music controversy.

When annap brought it back today, I know she was basically unaware of how sensitive this thread is to that ongoing debate. We were brought here one and all by our love of this music, but the tenor of the 'Cat has changed for better or for worse during the past year. We have a lot of new people who are very knowledgable and we have lost some too. Mudcat is a far more multi-dimensional place than it was and the threads relating to issues not directly to music have become a major part. Some see that as a problem, some don't. The music questions still get answered and the new people are freer in making postings from the gitgo, and that is healthy. Not everyone is tuned in to the same branches of folk or the same interests, but we seem to have a lot of collective knowledge which we openly share. I think we will see more from Max on additional features of the 'Cat in the near future in a magazine format also.

If you're a hardened scholar, you may be disappointed in what has happened. But for the most part the 'Cat has become and is becoming a more encompassing site and one which provides something for most folkies...and for most people in general. The closed feeling is long gone and people like Bonnie and Dave and annap are enjoying the company, as am I. Sorry if my presence here offends some, but I have my specialties too....but when they're not called for, I just enjoy the debates and the laughter and the warmth of the close friends I have here.

Spaw

...and now back to the usual inane, offensive banter. I had a friend in college, redheaded guy named Greg who hailed from Rochester, New York. After a few beers and in the spirit of camaraderie(did I spell that right,Garg?), he told me the following story:

In High School, Greg was dating a girl who seemed open to certain forms of intimate exploration which were quite new to him, Greg being of the Virginical persuasion. He eventually evaluated the direction of their increasingly heavy petting as being hell-bent toward a state he had heretofore achieved exclusively through perusal of a dog-eared copy of the October 1966 Playboy Magazine. In anticipation of the pending consummation, he purchased a packet of Ramses Pre-lubricated Reservoir Tipped Condoms.

At last, the highly anticipated rendezvous was arranged (by certain hot insinuations) for a Friday night. But Greg, having never dealt with such sensitive issues, and feeling disinclined to consult his clergyman on the matter, was stymied by the threat of that clumsy moment when, interrupting the flow of intense passion, he would have to don the thing. He wrestled with the problem in his mind until he at last hit upon a course of action that he felt would expedite matters while not offending his fragile partner. That night, as predicted, they found themselves partly disrobed and in the clutches of all-consuming lust. Greg boldly suggested that they "go all the way," to which the girl replied "but...you'll need protection!" He smiled back, saying "I have a condom!" When she said "well, put it on!" he replied "I'm already wearing it." Stunned, she queried "how long have you had it on?" Greg flinched. "Since about 5 o'clock this afternoon, right after I took my shower." Indignant, she pushed him away. While standing up to button her blouse, she shouted "What kind of girl do you think I am!"

As Greg finished his tale,he had tears in his eyes. I had tears in mine, as well, as I rolled on the floor in a fit of hysterical laughter.

Oh, for goodness sakes! I didn't bring this up to hurt anyone, least of all our wonderful Art. I was teasing him about his comment that he doesn't like nonsense threads and doesn't get envolved in them. I had no idea there was any sensitivity going on with this thread. I always thought of it as one of our more creative classic BS threads. If I offended anyone, most of all Art, then I apologize profoundly!

BTW BB, I hate the suckers, but they're a very neccessary evil. (that I don't need anymore ;-)

Spaw, thanks for clarifying what all the breast beating has been about. I guess all that took place before I became a member in July of 1999.

Were I to seriously address the question I would admit that I hated the little buggers. As soon as we had three kids I visited my friendly doctor who, with a simple surgical procedure, took care of that problem.

Liz, sorry you can't remember what they are for. If you buy some there may be some instructions included that might explain what they are for and how to use them.

Liz, you've forgotten already? Condoms are your best friend. They're for carrying water (You can get a gallon in a condom if you shove it down a shirt sleeve to stop it bursting)and for keeping water and dust out of delicate places. And, as any colour Sergeant in the British Army will tell you, they are NEVER to be used for anything else! Which begs the question; why do pubs with a perfectly good off-sales service still sell condoms in the bogs?

There are many things in life that I've never tried but two of them, that amaze my sons, are Tim Tams and condoms. I became so bored with the amount of discussion about bloody Tim Tams I said that I would live my whole life without eating one. My boys were horrified, to them it was like saying I wasn't going to breathe anymore. Sometimes they introduce me to a new girlfriend as "this is my dad John, you know, the bloke I told you about who doesn't eat Tim Tams". ( Now, if it was gin & tonic I wouldn't have lasted 2 days ! ) And condoms, I've been sexually active since 15, 53 now, and the circumstances ( oh no ! ) have always turned out that I haven't needed one. And no, I haven't got a swag of bastard children. I've never even owned a condon, never unwrapped one and if I did I'd have to read the instructions on how to use. Still things might change. I'm currently looking for wife No.3 and if she hasn't reached menopause - doh! And she might be a major shareholder in the Tim Tam company - oh no.

I have no idea why this one was unearthed, but what the hey?

What are Tim Tams?

After my most spectacular dumpage by the man formerly known as my fiance (I DID SURVIVE, I DID!!!), I was talking with some friends and saying how much I hate and dread the entire idea of dating ("Hi, My name is K., I'm a Libra and like music, film and ...")and then I said, "Omigod. If I ever have a lover again, I might have to actually buy condoms. Women DO that now ... I've never done that. I don't know how ..." Which they all thought was a hoot, although I was actually serious.

For months and months afterward, my friends mailed me condoms, left them in my purse, stuck them in the pen drawer in my desk. put them on my car's windshield. And they especially loved when they were on the road and found some of those neon lovelies or the ones that say stuff like, "Stealth Condoms: You'll never know they're ... " -- well, you get the drift -- or the Magnum condoms for REally Big Guys. I had such a lovely collection of condoms... Such thoughtful friends.

This is like seeing feminine accouterment advertised on the tube. We know what it is. We know what they're used for. We know all the brand names. We know how to use them and how they work. We've known this since our early teens.

Why, now, do they act like we are unable to make our decisions without the help of advertising by pre-teens in white shorts playing tennis?

I don't, however, know how condoms work, because I've never gotten the knack.

Got this story from a friend here at school:

[The friend's] father went in to a drugstore to buy his first box of condoms. He was pretty nervous about the whole thing and when the clerk asked him, "What size?", he became very flustered.

"Um, medium, I guess," he replied meekly.

Turns out, the clerk meant 'what size BOX' did he want?

Sorry Wyo - I thought Tim Tams were international ( like condoms ). They are a chocolate coated biscuit, heaven knows why they have achieved the status they have. My eldest boy Ryder is in the navy. When overseas his grandmother sends him parcels of Tim Tams in case he is suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Can you imagine the value of a Tim Tam on a Tim Tamless ship. The black market is in full swing.
