I would very much hate all the 'eeeuuws' and 'icks' to keep even one person from practicing safe sex if that's what their own, very particular situation demands. Putting it on or in you to get it on ....nevermind. Someone at my local pharmacy has hung the dental floss packets and condoms side by side. Of course people move them around on those rods. To get ultra-fine waxed peppermint floss, I have to dig through a gross of assorted colors, flavors, sizes, etc. Embarrassing, especially when a neighbor walks in and I am cradling 10 or so condom packs and contemplating others. |

I am talking several years ago, when the thingys were not hanging on the wall of every 7-11, Circle K, grocery, and drug store. When you bought them, the person waiting on you had to open a drawer (the loudest sound in the world that drawer opening) or reach under the counter. When I was a resident, I did an elective at some of the high-school-based student health centers run by the county. At one of the schools, I was sitting in the front office, shootin' the shit with the office staff when a sweet-faced boy came in and asked shyly for some condoms. The secretary gave him a bag of them. I was on the verge of making some inane comment when the nurse snickered and told me that he comes in every week for a bag. "We're not sure *what* he actually does with them. The other isn't so much a story as a confession. I was a very focused adolescent and college student, as well as very devout. So, you guessed it... I was a virgin bride at 25, whereupon I went on the Pill and so never had to deal with the dratted rubber thingies. Until one day a couple of years ago, I was taking a medication that made the Pill less effective, and didn't want to take any chances. The hubby and I were on vacation up in Canada and naturally wanted a little action. I bravely took it upon myself to seek out the necessary equipment, assuring my husband that I was a physician and therefore beyond embarrassment. People, I wandered into three drugstores before I got over my chagrin enough to buy the silly things. It didn't help that this was in Whistler, B.C. which is sort of a spawning ground anyway. And no, my husband hadn't bought them before either. And no, we didn't like them one bit. |

Well, I, for one, neither swell nor tell, and I'm also grateful as hell whenever something lovely comes along. I just expect the gratitude to be a two-way street -- being "serviced" is utterly icky, and sometimes it seems that's how men think of it. At least that's how it occurs to women when we hear phrases like "grateful as hell." However, I think if we penetrate this issue a bit (yup, that was I.P. -- intended pun) -- we might see that one of the best things about men's character and emotional makeup -- and a part that usually goes completely unrecognized -- is how much they love pleasing women. Sexually, sure, and in many other ways. Not all of them, by no means, but it IS an important aspect of the male psyche, I believe. But because we have such weird and warped ideas about sexuality and about emotion -- and about men -- this impulse devolves into the "servicing" ickiness. However, radical that I am and the soul of compassion, I think it's simply generous of me to give my (strictly hypothetical) man the opportunity to express the best of his inner nature ... I look on it as my very own missionary work. ww |
