Has anyone seen one of the preliminary NEFFA 2006 grids? I hear that the "For Performers Only" grid came out about 3 or 4 weeks ago, but no one has mentioned it yet on Mudcat. What gives? Has NEFFA requested performers to remain silent until they officially post the schedule on their website? I have heard of festivals that do that, but as far as I know NEFFA never has issued such a gag rule.

Hey Janice,
As a longtime NEFFA performer, I can tell you that there's good reason for what you call the "gag rule." The NEFFA committee, a member of which called me today to request a switch in my performance schedule, is still dealing with a myriad of performer requests for schedule changes, as well as changes necessitated by unanticipated conflicts (hypothetical example: a Balkan songs workshop is scheduled in the music room at the same time one of the musicians is supposed to play for a dance). With NEFFA, an all-volunteer effort, it really ISN'T ready to announce to the public until all this shifting is done. It's a practical matter. If the draft schedule were widely distributed, and somebody with their heart set on hearing Balkan songs came specifically for that only to find out it had been rescheduled for a different day, they would be unhappy. Multiply that possibility by hundreds of performers, and thousands of attendees, and you see why it needs to be kept under wraps until it's final. Don't worry, it will be out soon!

Neffa again! Seems like the crowds were down last year, and there were lots of rumors about a new venue, partly because of lost dancing space.
I wonder if any of the problems have been fixed, somehow.

So there is a NEFFA gag rule now. That explains why it's been so quiet. By this time last year there were a dozen or more peformers who were posting their tentative schedules, even if those schedules were subject to change. So let me rephrase my question. Has anyone received a NEFFA acceptance notice that she or he is willing to share? Please don't give a specific day or time; just a "yes" or "no" will do for now. Kathy, may I presume you are a "yes"?

I've just been busy with other things, haven't posted here in awhile. I'll be there, in 3 different venues, and I must say the NEFFA committee did a brilliant job honoring my requests re days and times -I knew better than to make specific requests, but last year my 3 gigs were all an hour apart on the same day and I ran around like a chicken with my head cut off and didn't get to any other sessions! This year (so far!) I'm more evenly distributed between Sat. and Sun. and haven't noticed any major conflicts with others (so far!) so I should have lots more leisure time to enjoy my friends and other workshops.

Janice, I'm definitely a yes. Doing a solo set, and also leading a "Remembering Helen Schneyer" workshop with various others, both scheduled for Sunday at this writing. It isn't really a gag rule--just a friendly request from the organizers to refrain from sharing the whole draft grid until it solidifies. Knowing how hard those program volunteers work (a thankless job involving lots of headaches and many, many uncompensated hours), I'm more than happy to honor that request. I don't think there's any problem with folks sharing their plans to be there as performers, as long as it's clear that specifics may change. And I expect that, now this thread has been started, others will chime in and confirm their expected presence at the festival, and that's good! NEFFA is a wonderful festival at which I've performed every year since 1990, and a terrific opportunity to dance your feet off and hear lots of great music. I won't say who will be there because it looks like the NEFFA people are pretty serious in keeping the schedule under wraps until it is posted to their website. But I can tell you two people who are on the preliminary schedule and who told me they won't be there. Both already sent withdrawal notices. They are:

Tom Neilson -- He accepted an offer to do a concert tour in Hawaii.

Takako Nagumo -- She's a Japanese national who works for the United Nations, and the UN assigned her to attend an international conference that conflicts with NEFFA.

Takako, by the way, is doing a house concert for the Philadelphia Folksong Society on February 25. If you get the chance, please go to hear her. I don't know when or if you will get a chance again. Takako, who is recognized in the Japanese community as the foremost performer of Japanese folk songs and children's songs in North America today, has been at NEFFA and NOMAD for the past two years, and she appeared in a children's concert with Pete Seeger in New York early last year. Her duties at the UN keep her from appearing more often, unfortunately for us.

And Janice, I know. The timing of my workshop is pretty awful. I want to clone myself so I can perform and listen at the same time. Unfortunately, it's a perennial problem when there are so many performers. Some years the scheduling turns out better than others. You just learn to live with it--and enjoy what you do get to hear. Hope to meet you there, either at my concert or hanging around the Folk Legacy and Camsco booths. Introduce yourself!

We use the Red Roof Inn in Framingham, because:

1) It's right at the Mass Pike exit nearest NEFFA.

2) It's an easy walk from it to the shuttle bus stop, even carrying instruments, so you can leave your car at the motel.

3) It doesn't give a NEFFA discount, so NEFFA won't list it in their places-to-stay list, so it isn't as likely to get sold out early.

4) It's quite cheap by the standards of the area.

I looked over the schedule and feel as if I will have to be in two to three places at any given time to see it all. More decisions. But I will get to see Morris Dancing for the first time. Neat!

To answer the question about where people are staying, I'll be where I always stay, at the Hampton Inn in Natick. It's only a short drive from there to Natick High School. The NEFFA rate is $88 per night + tax, and that includes breakfast. If you want to make a resetvation, call 508-653-5000.

Maybe someone should put some effort into making them understandable to us clueless folks who make up the bulk of the paying audience. Otherwise they should be PMs.

I think MMario misses the point. I am sure that John Hernandez realizes that Mudcat is not the official NEFFA website. From the way his message appears to me, he is saying that the original postings to this thread contained information that was accessible to everyone, such as who is performing, who isn't, whose performance is opposite whose, and where the best places to stay are, while the later postings are obscure chit-chat, incomprehensible to anyone but insiders. This is not something unique to this thread or even to Mudcat. It is something that goes on throughout Internet bulletin boards, discussion groups, chat rooms, newsgroups, and listservs. It may appear to be on the emotional level of giggly junior high school girls deciding who can and who can't be part of their clique, but it serves a useful function because adults never lose the need to feel that they are part of something exclusive and that all outsiders are a bunch of dweebs. Since adults should not act that way in real life, they do it on-line. It is neither good nor bad. It is just a fact of life. John should grow up and just accept it.

I think you are missing the point. This thread already contains the link to the NEFFA site, where, as has been pointed out - the current information is avaialble. Would you walk up to a group at a party who are discussing a concert you are interested in and demand they stitck to the subject because you bought a ticket to the concert and they are discussing where they are going to eat afterwards?

I wouldn't go up to the group in any event because people have the right to associate with whoever they please. That's why I said John should just grow up and accept the fact that Mudcat, like many other sites on the Internet, is a place where otherwise socially graceful and emotionally mature adults can act like silly junior high school children. On the other hand, if there are people interested in making the thread more inclusive rather keeping it exclusive, it is their responsibility to take the time to explain what some of the obscure messages mean. But I suspect that's not what most people want to do, especially not the insiders who dominate the conversation. There's a certain amount of emotional satisfaction that comes from speaking (or in this case writing) in secret short hand. Everyone does it at some time in their life, so it's not necessarily a bad thing, nor is it a good thing. It just is.

This was basically friends chatting about an event that they will all be attending. If this is of no interest then just scroll over and see whether anyone else has given the information that you are looking for. There is no compulsion to read each post.

Looking at what has been posted - we do behave somewhat like that in real life, because we all know each other. That does not preclude others joining in - most of us became friends through coming onto this site. I am mildly offended to be told that we are behaving like 'silly junior high school children'. Please don't patronise. I don't think that any of the posters here would dream of calling others 'dweebs' just because they have not yet become friends.

Check in the BS section and you will see a lot more of what you call 'exclusivity' and what we would say is a group of people who have been regular posters on the Mudcat, quite often on a daily basis, for years getting together to discuss various topics. There is no bar to joining in with the banter if you wish but, if not, do not criticise those who do, even if it does happen on a thread above the line.

I haven't added anything since March 1 because all my questions were answered once NEFFA put its schedule up on its website. But I have been lurking for the past two weeks and paying especially close attention to the discussion of the past 24 hours. Without taking sides let me say that there certainly appears to be an inner circle. I believe I know who some of them are, including Animaterra and Midchuck, as well as the people who sign their real names. I have no idea who the others are, including SINSULL, bbc, MMario, kendall, and jacqui c. Anyone from the outside who reads this thread can see that right away. It's not a figment of the imagination.

Having said that, let me add a word of special praise for Kathy Westra. She is clearly one of the insiders, and yet she takes special care to make sure her own postings are understandable and welcoming. Take a look at them again and you will see what I mean. Kathy teaches by example, and her postings are free of in-crowd codespeak on one hand and snide sarcasm on the other. In doing so, she has made all of Mudcat a more open and friendly forum. Thank you, Ms. W.!

As it sometimes happens in groups that grow tight, some of the inner workings do become to appear & what you see & said is true, though not intentional. It's to bad that it was you that pointed this out but you are the better for it & I'm one who would that this transgression does not deter yo & Amira Barzani from using this site. It does not take really any effort or time as long as you speak your mind & don't let any of get ahead of ourselves for this to be a friendly site for anyone. As long as a level of decency is kept up to snuff.

Amira Barzani, please don't get your back up, as I believe this was a slight oversite, knowing most involved & again I'm sure this was not meant to rub anyone the wrong way. My Mudcat name is the name of my women's chorus (click) which will be performing at NEFFA on Sunday morning at 10:45, or rather than performing, we'll be facilitating a pleasant opportunity to sing songs which don't often find themselves in the "singaround" repertoire. I too have been a member for five or six years. My name appears in at least three thread titles above the line right now. I offer House Concerts and Song Circles in Southern Maine. They are open to anyone who happens to be in the area and have been attended by locals as well as members up and down the east coast, Texas, England, Scotland and I forget where else.
Please, if you are in the area - there is always a meal, music, good company and a warm bed. Ed Trickett in May, Seamus Kennedy in August, Judy Cook in September, so far set this year. There is a New Year's Eve special and a summer Lobster Boil as well.

Janice, you & I have met at NOMAD, the past couple of years. I'm Barbara from New York. bbc happens to be my initials & I use it because that is how everyone now knows me. I regularly sign as Barbara & have never hidden who, what, or where I am. Although I've been a Mudcat member for several years, I am not an insider, if that means a frequent poster. I am not a performer; I am audience, a lover of the music & the musicians. If there is some chat in the event-based threads--at least for my part--it's because I only get to see most of these friends I've made over Mudcat 1-3 times a year at said events. The intent is not to exclude others. If fact, that's the main reason I am not very active in Mudcat, these days; it's gotten too chatty & too negative.

Janice, I think the people who you've named as part of the 'inner circle' are simply the ones who feel relaxed enough to be silly. The blather, which I've been a part of, can go on long enough, and be obtrusive enough to get on even my nerves, though. Getting them/us to stop it is likely not going to happen. Having moderated threads separate from the chat threads might prove useful in the future. (It worked great with the FSGW Getaway thread last year.)

In any case, I don't think there's anyone around here who doesn't at least like Kathy Westra!

Look at our posts again. Each person is explaining who they are and emphasizing that there is no inner circle. Kath Westra was just at my house for the second or third time for the John Roberts concert. If there were an inner circle, she would be the ring leader.
As to NEFFA, I can't be in three places at once and don't expect to be at her workshops. But I will more than likely run into her at the Folk Legacy booth. I really have never had an opportunity to see Morris Dancing and will spend quite a bit of time there. Even tried to get a workshop set up at the FSGW Getaway but there was a logistics problem.
I don't wear a Mudcat T-Shirt or Button so you won't know me on sight. But I do hope our paths cross.
And I will put all further BS below the line.

I believe you're right, but all I can find is that sealable water bottles or sports bottles must be used for drinks when you're not in the cafeteria. (To prevent spills.) There's no mention of what one might have in the bottles.

I don't think that I have ever seen a sober Morris Dancer - that's part of the tradition, to have that pewter tankard hanging from the belt. I sometimes think that, in the UK, Morris dancing is used as a good excuse for a pub crawl.

Three days I go I made what I thought was a simple and noncontroversial request. Fortunately, not everyone acted in the manner I describe above. Barry Finn, SINSULL, Barbara, and Animaterra, in particular, responded positively to my request and to the other people who expressed concerns.

So this is what I have learned. For official information go to the NEFFA website. (I already knew that.) For additional insight on such matters as where to stay, what to expect in the workshops and concerts, which Morris teams to watch, what you can and cannot drink, and who should be afraid of whom, stay here on Mudcat. But wear your flame-retardant suit!

If you want to be friendly and inclusive, try a little hospitality.

John - NEFFA is a wonderful event with more music, dancing,and visiting
than any one person can take in. One thing you *should* know is that
on-site parking is very restricted, so finding a place to stay near
the off-site parking area is a good idea. And, wait for the bus near
the parking ramp area. Last year we stood around for nearly an hour
waiting for buses that never made the loop becauase they got filled
right away at that first entrance.

I've got long red hair, and will be singing with Dave Ruch and the
Woodchuck's gang in a "Songs for a Snowy Evening" session.

I am sorry that some people responded in a manner that I found less than pleasant, but you certainly were not one of them. Some of the others, such as MMario, have now explained what they intended to say, and I accept that. I really don't know who the other people are, including the ones you mentioned, but let me say who I am. I'm 42 years old. I was born in Miami and I have lived in New York City and its Nassau County suburbs until recently, but I now live in Maryland just outside Washington. My interests in music include classic jazz, Latin jazz, blues, classic country, classic rock, folk, and acoustic singer-songwriter stuff. My favorite folk musicians are John Prine and the late Steve Goodman. I have been to the Phladelphia Folk Festival several times and Falcon Ridge once, but it is only in the past 4 or 5 years that I discovered the smaller festivals like Old Songs, Mystic, and NEFFA, and with it the more traditional style of folk music. I play a little bit of piano and guitar, but not enough to ever think of myself as a performer. That's about all.

John - one of the things commented on in older threads about previous NEFFA's is that it is multi-festivals in one - there is so much going on in so many areas. Even when you are activly LOOKING for people it is possible to totally miss each other for hours or even days.

MMario, thank you. I know what you mean. I have been to NEFFA twice, and I found it more overwhelming than Old Songs, or even Falcon Ridge or Philly. There are really so many things going on in such a relatively small space. I notice that much of the socialising goes on in the lunchroom, while the corridors are filled with jam sessions. And thanks, too, for explaining your earlier message. I believe neither of us was clear in the beginning.

Pamela in Ithaca, thank you for the information on the shuttle bus. The two times I went to NEFFA I stayed with a couple of friends in Framingham, and they dropped me off and picked me up. This year, if I go, I will fly to Logan and then either rent a car or take the commuter train to Natick. The information on the shuttle bus is very useful.

Us Woodchucks are doing a set at 10:00 am Saturday, if I've gotten enough coffee into me by then to know which way up to hold the guitar, but not so much I can't get through an hour set without peeing. (H. Allen Smith told a story of two men about my age who met after not seeing each other for some years. One asked the other, "And how are you spending your time these days?" The other one said, "Peeing, and trying to remember the names of my friends." When I first read that, thirty or so years ago, I thought it was funny, but rather improbable. I should have known...But I digress.) That set will be mostly cowboy (or outlaw or railroad worker or whore, etc.) songs. Then at 2:00 Saturday, as indicated above, we're sharing a set with Dave Ruch and Pamela Goddard, entitled "New England Fireside." We have never met or worked with our set-mates before, and have not done any real planning for the performance. But that's the way NEFFA works, and it's usually more fun that way. Sometimes someone figures, "If I sing the longest songs, I'll get more stage time." But not very often.

Mike Agranoff has got a parodies workshop Sunday afternoon, 2:30, and has invited us to sit in and do a song or so. I replied to him, We would be pleased to assist you in lowering the level of taste at NEFFA below any depth previously reached.

Other than that, I plan to get into whatever good jams I can find, spend too much money at Camsco, and eat a lot of ethnic food that makes my farts smell even worse than usual. That about covers it. Hope to see many of you.

Haven't had time to post on this thread since the beginning, but I'd better say that Tom and I will be there Saturday during the day.

Scheduling seeing/hearing everything you want to is always a problem, but I start by mapping out my day before I get there, modifying it (maybe) once I get the official program when we sign in, and -- mostly -- coming to grips with the fact I can't be everywhere I want to be AND see friends, fill up on the wonderful selection of ethnic foods in the cafeteria, etcet etcet. Usually by not always staying at a session from beginning to end I can just about hear everything I want.

Didn't have as many of the usual scheduling conflicts this year.

Ran into a vendor/jewelry maker from whom I had bought my favorite necklace 15 years ago -- and I was wearing it. We didn't recognize each other at first and she didn't recognize the necklace (although she thought it was similar to some she'd made), but then I recognized her name on her business card and reminded her of where we'd met, etc.

Some of the usual food vendors weren't there because of recent illnesses -- so I actually got a chance to eat something other that my old favorites. (Time in between music is always at a premium -- the hardest decisions are what to cut short because you desperately need to eat or to find a bathroom!) So satisfied by potato pancake craving (along with stuffed cabbage likle my mother makes) and had the wonderful Turkish veggie plate with hummus and tomato/cucumber salad and stuffed grape leaves, etc.

Spent too much money (uh huh) with Sandy and Dick and listened to Art Thieme all the way home.

I agree with both Kendall and everyone else. I had a wonderful time, but by Sunday afternoon I got this feeling that I wished I had brought a machete, so I could just start swinging at random and clear some space around me. Too many people in too small a space for very long tends to bring out the sociopath in me. (We all have one. Many people lie to themselves about it.)

But our sets went well, especially the one with Dave and Pamela; and there was some great jamming.

Of course part of the problem on Sunday was that no one came to our room for champagne on Saturday night except Jacqui, so we had to finish the whole bottle ourselves so as not to waste it, and it took as a while.

I, of course, enjoyed the 'Chucks, Sir Agronoff (SP?), John Roberts, Sandy and Caroline, etc. But I had some wonderful surprises in the Long Steel Rail workshop, 1900s workshop, Animaterra's incredible sing-along, and Parlor Songs as well as Bob Clayton's cowboy workshop and his workshop with Jennifer. I am forgetting others. It was difficult to choose between people I knew and topics I love.

Mostly it was wonderful to see the Patons and spend some "silly" time, KarenK, and Dick and Susan.

It must have been wonderful, I was too tired to share champagne with the Chucks. And once again I come away humbled by the incredible depth of knowledge shared.

I saw my first Morris Dance. Don't quite know what to make of it. My efforts with dirty socks and clean bras were ridiculed. Maybe with practice.

Thank you to the ones who made this possible including the patient bus drivers. Thank you to all who shared their talents. And "I hate you" to those of you who got my credit card number.

With Jacqui's prodding, I set foot for the first time in a Wal-Mart and made a general nuisance of myself signing the cross and sprinkling holy water on the anti-Christ. I would love to see the tapes on their security cameras. The faces on fellow shoppers were priceless.

All I can do is agree with those who have already posted. There were some amazing sets - I got to both of John Robert's workshops and am glad I did. Animaterra's Sing For Joy was incredible and it was such a lift to be able to sing with all those present.

The Parody workshop was brilliant and thanks to Deb O'Hanlan for sending me the "How Can I Stop From Eating' words that I wanted. There are a couple more that I need to beg from others, especially the parody on Streets of London from Mike Agranoff. Woodchuck's Revenge were definitely on my list and, Peter and Kris, I hope you appreciate the effort I put in to helping you do away with that bottle of champagne late Saturday night.

It was a real treat to listen to Sandy and Caroline Paton in their workshop on Saturday afternoon. Their voices sound so good together and they are a real delight to know. I treasure all the time that I can spend with them.

I must admit that spending the last eighteen months in Maine has made dealing with crowds a bit more difficult. Peter - I was thinking more of a machine gun, but I'm just downright nasty in those situations. It did get irritating when we came across groups of people catching up with friends and blocking doorways or halls so that there was just room for one person to pass. There was a lot of muttering under the breath and thoughts of getting Mr Agranoff's 10 ton Mollie to deal with the situation.

It was good to catch up with other 'Catters such as BBC, Animaterra, Jennifer Woods, the Chucks, Karen K, Dick and Susan, Anglo...... Never enough time for all the things that I would have liked to have done.

Just thank your lucky stars though that you did not have to witness SINSULL morris dancing with a pair of her bras. Seriously worrying, particularly since we were sharing a room and she was doing the driving. I was prepared, in Walmart, to explain the manager, if he asked about the blessing and sprinkling, that Mary had been 'away' for some time and that this was her first supervised trip out, to see if she could cope with freedom. Luckily that wasn't necessary - they're probably used to such things there.

Greetings:

I got back from NEFFA last night to find up to an inch and a half of water flooding the low point of the basement, an area of about 30 square feet. I spent a couple of hours pumping out what I could, but the pump shut down when the water level dropped below a quarter of an inch, so I now need to mop up the rest.

I'm happy to say I got a chance to say hello to Sinsull for the first time in a couple of years, and at the same time had a chance to meet Jacqui for the first time ever. I also mangaed to say hello to Dick and Susan, and I ran into all the Chucks repeatedly. However, for a good portion of the weekend I was more than a bit out of sorts. Two of the four people in MacDougal Street Rent Party who were supposed to be at NEFFA had to cancel at the last moment for personal reasons. Fortunately, I managed to draft two quick replacements at the very last moment for our Sunday morning children's concert, NEFFA performer Heather Lev and audience member Axel Henri. Even with only 10 minutes to rehearse the event went off without a hitch. We had about 20 kids and nearly an equal number of adults in the audience, and I don't think any of them suspected that Heather and Axel were pinch hitters until I said so.

On top of that, it is too early to tell if my phyical therapy for osteoarthritis and carpal syndrome will be successful. I still have a limited range of motion in and around my left shoulder from the former, and number and tingling in both hands from the latter. At least I can still play the guitar, although I don't always know where my fingers are. Not that it matters very much. You know, close enough for folk music. [Joke.]

One thing that I will certainly remember about this festival is Midchuck explaining his plan for long term health care insurance. If he ever faces some progressive debilitating disease such as Alzheimer's, he told me he would go and murder all the people he has fantasies of killing. He would then spend the rest of his life at taxpayer expense in the prison wing of some cozy Vermont nursing home. I guess that's socialized medicine Northern New England style. [Also joke, so I presume.]

After a day of recovery, I am happy to say that I too enjoyed NEFFA but by mid-day Sunday, my visions involved a 12-foot bull-whip...

I didn't get to visit with y'all as much as I had hoped, but enjoyed seeing Sinsull and Jacqui- it was a treat to see you at the singing workshop! Missed all but 10 minutes of "Ye Mariners All"- I was squished into a corner of the tiny space by the door, so popular were those good men! I barely got to any other workshops, but enjoyed seeing Sandy and Caroline, dear bbc, Dick and Susan, the 'chucks; saw Pamela from a distance, Anglo from a distance, Suffet from a distance- missed Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon all together.

I WISH I coulda seen you morris dance, Sins! Next time you feel so moved, I'd be happy to coach you. Never thought of bras- what a great idea! I'll tell my team, who knows, we could set a trend!

My daughter has stopped coming to NEFFA because there's no place to go when you just need to retreat to your quiet space, as there is at Old Songs (a woman's tent is her sanctuary!). Rumor has it that NEFFA will be in an as-yet-undisclosed location in Quincy next year. Maybe the halls are wider, the classrooms bigger, the parking closer??? We can dream!

Sinsull, Thank you *so* much for the kind words.
I often don't feel like an angel, so it's good to know
that I sound like one from time to time.
Dave and I aren't a duo... just friends, as they say.
Actually, it was the first time we'd sung together side by side
but we hope to do more of it in the future.

I think the hallway crowding and frustration with crowds builds
on damp, dreary, chill weekends like the one we had. It's better
when you can get outside. And yes, after decades in the Natick school
NEFFA will be in a different place next year. From what I heard
the organizers are still exploring options, but somewhere in/near
Quincy is a strong contender. I suppose all will be made plain
in the next several months. Until then... we wait and wonder.

NEFFA seems to have a regular effect on my group, Sidekicks. Pete Kraemer, my partner, regularly gets a bad cold on NEFFA weekend -- and kindly passes it on to me and Jennifer. Sadly, it seems to have worked that way this year, too. Pete and I got through his blues workshop in so-so fashion, and somehow managed to do possibly our best set ever (at least as a duo) on Sunday morning. By mid-afternoon, we were the walking wounded, and got Jennifer to leave possibly earlier than she might have, just because we were so "out of it."

As for other sets, I didn't see many -- I'm a terrible 'audient,' but an enthusiastic participant, because I'd rather DO than HEAR, if you see what I mean. Unfortunately, one I tried to take part in didn't work, because my guitar was slightly low (new strings, that afternoon), not to mention the cellphone that went off, despite my supposedly "silent" setting. My participation in that workshop (tune-writning) wasn't what I had in mind.

Anyway, we thought Sunday's attendance was sort of sparse, probably due to the weather. Watching the morris dancers (who perform outdoors) use umbrellas as rappers was interesting, I must say.

Well, I thought I'd wait to post my report until I felt more coherent. Since I'm home sick today, that should do it. This was my 1st time at NEFFA. Of the festivals I attend--Old Songs, NOMAD, & now NEFFA, I'd rate NEFFA 3rd, but still worthwhile. Yes, it was crowded & that was somewhat inconvenient. I'm always a little frustrated at these events because I think I'll have chatting time w/ the friends I only see 1-3 times a year & then, because we are dashing off to listen to music/perform, not much of that happens. Nonetheless, it is delightful to see those folks & support their music. Leo & Jeri, I'm sorry you didn't make it. Tom & Linn, Steve & Marilyn Suffet, I'm sorry that I missed you. George Stevens & Mary LaMarca, you were missed. I saw various performers attend, who I don't think performed--Lui Collins, David Paton as a couple of examples.

I started out Saturday morning at Woodchucks' Revenge "Cowboys & Outlaws" session. They were fun, as usual. Peter has one of the best deadpan expressions I've ever seen. Is that Vermont? The highlight for me was hearing again their rendition of "Tunbridge Fair." It would be nice to see that recorded or, at least, lyrics available. Thanks for singing it.

From there, I went to Bob Clayton & Jennifer Woods' "Histories, Mysteries." I can't recall particular songs, but I enjoyed seeing & hearing them.

"New England Fireside" was next, with the 'Chucks, Pamela Goddard, & Dave Ruch. Pamela has a beautiful, clear voice & gives wonderful introductions to her songs--always a pleasure. It was very nice meeting Dave Ruch. He has a very pleasant voice & a refreshing, enthusiastic presentation. He also seems to know the background of his songs. After that session, he & I attended so many other sessions as audience that he accused me of following him, until he realized that I had arrived at the session before him! :)

On to "Folk Song Harvest" w/ Sandy & Caroline Paton. This session was well-attended & the love folks have for the Patons was reflected on their faces. Although I have the privilege of living close enough to the Patons to see them socially, I never tire of seeing them perform together. I enjoy their sweet, distinctive voices & the interaction between folks who've put in time as a couple.

Next, I went to "Traditional English Songs" w/ John Roberts. I sat in the front row w/ hecklers Jacqui, SINSULL, & (perhaps) Jennifer. Although I have heard John's music before, I heard more of him this weekend than in the past & felt like I got to know him a bit better. What a great performer! His commentary before the songs was so much fun that I didn't know if he'd ever actually start to sing. The love for him in the audience was apparent, too.

I couldn't miss "Songs of Sea & Shore" w/ Dan & Bonnie Milner. I enjoy hearing them separately, but even more, together. And what a nice couple!

After that, I thought I was done for the evening, when who did I meet in the hall but our own Allison (Animaterra)! In scanning the schedule, I hadn't realized that she was performing that evening in her alter-ego as Seanmas--w/ herself on concertina & her good friend & harpist, Melanie Everard! Beautiful, heavenly music!

Sunday, I was up bright & early at the Red Roof Inn. Enjoyed talking w/ David Paton in the parking lot & dropped by Dunkin' Donuts for a quick breakfast. Then, off to an hour of Sacred Harp singing. Even though I only do it a few times a year, I do pretty well, except w/ the fast ones! What a great sound, though; does your heart good.

Sunday was a singing day for me. Next was "Sing for Joy" w/ the Animaterra chorus. Allison is a skilled, enthusiastic director & a beautiful woman, body & soul.

On to "Remembering Helen Schneyer," led by Kathy Westra, w/ John Roberts, Ellen Christensen, & Irene Saletan. I never saw Helen in person & have only learned her music in recent times, through my contact w/ the Patons (They keep trying to educate me!) She must have had a very powerful presence, from what folks say & the continuing love for her that was shown & sung in that session. Kathy surprised me by calling Bob Franke up from the audience for a guest spot. He sang "He turned the water into wine." It was a neat song, easy to harmonize w/. His song, but he said Helen is the only one who's ever recorded it. I liked it.

The last session I attended was Kathy Westra's "In the Tradition." Kathy has a lovely voice & chooses great material. She is involved in her music in a wonderful way. I have to say I always enjoy music more if I can like the performers as people, too. Kathy certainly ranks high in that group!

You may have noticed that every session I attended (except the Sacred Harp) involved Mudcat folks. In the past 7 or so years, this site has great enriched my life & broadened my experience in music. I'm grateful for it. I am not a performer, nor am I ever likely to be, but I sure appreciate those of you who keep the music alive & make it available for the rest of us. Weekends like this one soothe & uplift my spirit.

With so many great workshops it was tough to choose, bbc. I decided to attend many non-Mudcat sessions where the topic interested me. All were fun; some were great. I loved the "Long Steel Rail" workshop and Evy's 1900 sing-along. I hated missing Kath Westra and Animaterra's first workshop but I finally got to see some Morris Dancers.

Like the Getaway, you can't be in three places at one time. And like the Getaway, the spontaneous jam sessions are as good or better than what's on the stage. Tough choices but better than being bored.

The crowds were a problem and at times downright scary. I can't see how they could possibly get people out if there were an emergency. Found myself back in NYC survival mode and ready to knock old ladies out of my. In fact, I went outside to watch the dancers just to recover my equilibrium.

Nahh, it's lawyering. When your own client does or says something really stupid and you have to sit on your natural reaction to it...

Fun thing happened. Was jamming on Carter Family stuff with Pete Peterson and Kellie and them and they gave me their new "Waking up Tillie" CD, "Groundhog Day." Kellie has a song on there, "Forgiveness," by Sarah Hawker. Liner notes say that the author won the '04 Merlefest songwriting contest with it.

The Lonesome Sisters were at the last Old Songs. I was in the used instrument sales place and saw a new-looking Epiphone EF500 Masterbilt - the new Chinese all-solid-wood line - the model that's essentially an OM. It said on the tag that it was consigned by Sarah Hawker who had won it in the '04 Merlefest songwriting contest. So I kept going back to look at it and the price kept getting reduced...So guess where it ended up?

I guess I'll have to name it "Forgiveness."

Hi, folks - sorry that I missed NEFFA this year; it sounds like there were lots of sessions I'd have loved. I'm having troubles with limited mobility, and was anxious about using a walker in NEFFA's crowded hallways. Then George got sick and we couldn't rehearse, so we decided to give it a pass this year. Maybe next year!
