Our pollies don't resign when they're caught with their snouts & trotters in the trough, oh, no - they have bad memories ("I don't remember") or received bad advice ("I wasn't told").

Our head pollie, Little Johnny, offered the excuse "non-core promises" for lying a few years back, and now Oz can offer the world a new reason for not knowin' nuffin' - deafness.

It surfaced in the wonderfully entertaining AWB (Australian Wheat Board) Bribes for Saddam Enquiry - a bloke who knows nuffin' cos he's hard of hearing!, and was also only included in the delegation sent to Iraq as a decoration! For this role he earned the best part of $1 million.

This separation has Alistair Campbell's (that's British English for Carl Rove's) fingerprints all over it. They've already said it's a temporary arrangement. They'll get back together when the heat is off (or whenever darling hubby is released from an Italian jail, if it comes to that).

Politicians can't actually be blamed for what their spouses turn into, but with the kind of company that they keep, it's hardly surprising that NewLabour people end up brown-nosing the likes of Ecclestone and Murdoch to such an extent that their field of vision becomes, shall we say, somewhat restricted.

I cannot conceive of any situation where £350k is considered such an insignificant amount that it's not worth a mention to the wife. Regarding the £350,000, my first thought was, and still remains, 'Gift my arse'
I know I don't travel in the rarified circles of international finance, nor do I enjoy the sort of income that our politicians receive, between their salary and their allowances. (20p a mile cycle allowance for christ's sake!)
However with their sort of income, [She's on about £75,000* p.a. +]and a mortgage free house they must have been awash with money.
It still beggars belief that anyone should receive a gift of that amount from a business associate!

Something puzzles me.
The HQ of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, Cecil sharp House, lies within The London borough of Camden, (aka the People's Republic of Camden) where Miss Jowell/Mrs. Mills was once a councilor.
At the time she was a councilor with that borough, an attempt was made by them to remove the Educational Charity status of EFDSS on the grounds that, because they were the ENGLISH Folk Dance and Song Society, they were rascist.
With that sort of background, what the hell was she doing as a Cultural Minister????

It's a puzzle what makes them tick. I mean, once you've got enough to get by, and a little extra in case, what's the point of buggering around breaking your neck pulling fast ones, and risking disaster, all just to get more? Life's just too short for that kind of crap.

And yet they do. And seemingly normal people, when you say that kind of thing, look incredulous at the very idea that it's even possible to think you've got enough to get by.

Maybe there's some way in which discontent with how things is the engine that drives some people into an obsession with electoral politicking, and then that hunger gets reconnected at some time into straightfirward personal greed. (That's aside from the other situation where it's personal greed and ambition in the driving seat all along, with the politics being seen as the available way of furthering that.)

The best was when she was asked why she agreed to sign the false and fraudulant joint tax return that he filed. She claimed that she never read it.
