Subject: Current Folk Rock From: Les in Chorlton Date: 13 May 06 - 03:37 AM I have enjoyed Whapweasel, 422, Demon Barbers and previously all the Hutchings bands. What's current and worth listening to in the genre of Folk Rock - some trad songs but drums, bass and a bit of attitude? |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,rtim Date: 13 May 06 - 10:07 AM They may not be right up to date, by try getting hold of anything by the band - Cordelia's Dad - with the great voice of Tim Eriksen. Tim R |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: The Borchester Echo Date: 13 May 06 - 10:27 AM Glory Strokes |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Les in Chorlton Date: 13 May 06 - 02:15 PM thanks a lot. Plenty of Rock and attitude to both of them. I will listen again to the stuff on their wesites. Do Glory Strokes do Ceilidhi? (sorry can't spell that) |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Grab Date: 13 May 06 - 04:00 PM Show of Hands are oldish but still going. Their recent stuff isn't quite as good, but still worth a listen. Blue Horses are fantastic - well worth seeing if you get a chance. Graham. |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Rasener Date: 13 May 06 - 04:11 PM The Duncan McFarlane Band - most definately folk rock and visually very good. Have a look at the pictures on their website. Duncan McFarlane & Band |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 14 May 06 - 02:50 AM I think the current Bruce Springsteen "Pete Seeger Sessions" would qualify for the category. Only just started listening/watching the DVD. So far, much enjoyment. |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Lancashire Lad Date: 14 May 06 - 04:40 AM And a good selection here. cheers LL |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: MoorleyMan Date: 14 May 06 - 09:46 AM The superb Duncan McFarlane Band and Blue Horses definitely for starters, can't go wrong there. |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: HipflaskAndy Date: 15 May 06 - 10:53 AM Never one to miss a 'marketing opportunity', me!!! Thanks for the pozzy comments up above folks. Les, we definitely count as 'current'. See www.duncanmcfarlane.co.uk Once again we have festivals lined up this year Masham, Leigh-on-Sea, Glasson Dock, Sheffield Beer Fest, Hardraw, SIDMOUTH, Gainsborough, Ingleton ….some of them acoustic, some electric. Even the acoustic line-up is getting plaudits now – for one example, I opened this on my email today… 'Hi Duncan What a great gig last night! I keep hearing about your music but have never heard it live before... It's wonderful! - such drive and energy, and yet completely English. The only other band I've ever heard who come remotely near what you're doing is the full Eliza Carthy band with Spiers and Boden. It's rock without any American influence. Fabulous! Must get to hear the full electric band asap.' …and a recent Mudcat thread after the leccie band played Holmfirth Festival of Folk had this… 'We popped in quickly to the Picturedrome but it was a bit loud for our little one - we both agreed though that the Duncan McFarlane Band sounded better than the last Steeleye Span concert we went to' …which was followed up with a PM to me on here… 'Really, you did sound better than SS. We went to see them in Auckland last year…. …….Anyway, we really enjoyed your stuff, shame we couldn't stay for more, but folk festivals and one year olds aren't the best helpmates!!! PS, my hubby loved the song Duncan sang about computers on Saturday night (I was baby sitting so didn't get to hear it).... is it on a CD anywhere? Cheers. We have no agent, no manager, no label, no proper marketing tools (though we have managed to be rated highly enough to have our gigs listed among the pros on the BBC Folk & Acoustic website for about a year now!). We do everything ourselves 'because we just enjoy it all' – so pardon this publicity stance on here. Just come and hear us – make yourself known to us when you do – yours is a pint? Folk on! - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: BusyBee Paul Date: 15 May 06 - 10:57 AM I'd second, third and fourth everything said about the Duncan McFarlane Band, whether by Villan, Moorley Man or Hipflask Andy himself! |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,Doku Date: 15 May 06 - 11:19 AM Les, the Glorystrokes do do ceilidhs. 9th June in Sheffield is their next one I think. |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Les in Chorlton Date: 15 May 06 - 01:11 PM thanks again, really liked the sound of the DM Band and would love to hear Glory Strokes do a Ceilidh |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,mollycat Date: 15 May 06 - 04:07 PM I love the Duncan Mcfarlane band acoustic or electric! They were fab at Holmfirth as the electric band, I really enjoyed a new song they did called Sheepstealer - is Duncan trying to tell us something of his murky past? I just wish they had a new cd for me to buy so I could take them all home with me! I took myself & a friend (who had not seen the acoustic band before) to see them on Saturday at the Courthouse in Otley - the 1st gig in a new series arranged by the lovely Nick Hall called 'Court in Session'. The audience had a great evening that was brought to a wonderful close by Duncan and the chaps (sorry Anne) who really threw themselves into their performance, with the aid of a few glasses of beer I suspect. Now I'm looking forward to seeing them in Pannel on 3rd June and Masham Music Festival 16-18 June, I'm expecting to see both versions and Duncan solo over the weekend thanks to Mr Steve '3 festivals' Fairholme's expert organisational skills. I wonder if I'll get to take one of them home with me......... |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: HipflaskAndy Date: 16 May 06 - 07:51 AM 'The Sheepstealer' is a trad song Molly, not my lyric. I don't believe I'm revealing owt there then! Hah! Beltin' version tho' isn't it!! Glad it hits the spot for you. The band are currently in the studio doing our follow up to 'Woodshed Boys' and Sheepstealer's bass, drums and guitar parts were laid down last week along with guide vocals... fingers crossed we get a reasonably 'vibrant' rec to match the 'live' sound, eh? Pannal Memorial Hall near Harrogate on June 3rd, as you say, for another run out by the electric version of the DMcF band. Do say hello to us when you get there. Cheers - Duncan |

Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Folkiedave Date: 16 May 06 - 05:03 PM I am a long standing fan of Duncan and his band. I think the comparisons with Steeleye is apt but I also believe there is a distinct "MacFarlane" sound too. Basically they rock!! |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: migginz Date: 16 May 06 - 06:14 PM FOS Brothers / McCrory Brothers. Don't know what name they are using at present but there are web sites for both - no gigs tho' dammit |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: HipflaskAndy Date: 17 May 06 - 09:24 AM er, that's McFarlane, Folkiedave ....not Mac tsk, tsk... Must I come down to Sheffield and drum it into you, you rascal!! How's things for you two these days? Cheers - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Rasener Date: 17 May 06 - 11:02 AM Phew, I'm glad I got Duncan's surname correct :-) |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: BusyBee Paul Date: 17 May 06 - 11:50 AM That's funny, I thought you liked a good drumming Villan! |

Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Folkiedave Date: 18 May 06 - 08:00 PM Phew, I'm glad I got Duncan's surname correct :-) And as the son of an Orcadian mother and with a Scottish wife - I flagellate myself. It's OK, the new film "The Da Vinci Code" is advertised as: "Contains flagellation and moderate violence". |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Effsee Date: 18 May 06 - 09:27 PM "Folkiedave" ..........."And as the son of an Orcadian mother" ...........Have you heard of Three Peace Sweet? They rock!! |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,tom_green Date: 18 May 06 - 09:57 PM hey Les. I'm an aussie boy and we have a great little band down here known as The Waifs. They have a couple of albums, although their titles escape me at the moment. I definatly suggest you check the out! |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: HipflaskAndy Date: 19 May 06 - 06:31 AM Didn't know you were from Oz, Tom! One crackin' Oz Folk-Rock band from a wee while back was 'Roaring Jack' - their ex singer and front man Alistair Hulett still has their CDs (groovy double package combining various releases) for sale. Still sounding vibrant as much today, as then. Ali sang on a few tracks of our debut DMcFband 'Woodshed Boys' album (he lives over here in the UK now and has become a pal o' ours). So folks, tho' they aren't 'current' - their CDs still worth getting hold of! Cheers - Duncan |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,CamoJohn Date: 19 May 06 - 07:14 AM CIRCULUS - circulus.org also samples and tour lis at http://www.myspace.com/circulus They play medieval dance tunes in a trippy 70's mode. Beautiful female vocals, flutes, bongos, a guitar wiz and freaky synths. Saw them last week in High Wycombe and they were Awesome - the young'uns love 'em too, which is awesome. CamoJohn |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,Nicholas Waller Date: 19 May 06 - 09:43 AM Looking at forthcoming and recent band-type guests booked at The Topic (Bradford) we have: Entropy - a young 4-piece Otley-based band "likened to early Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention" whose debut CD is due out this year. CrossCurrent a young 5-piece band made up of recent graduates of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne folk and traditional music programme. Not much drum and bass, though. The Queensberry Rules - 3-pieces "tipping a wink to folk, bluegrass, country and blues whilst wrapping it all up with a skiffle sensibility" with percussion, double-bass and guitar (and mandolin and harmonica). The Durbervilles - 5-piece mixing "American roots, new country and cajun" but sounding thoroughly home-grown, according to one reviewer. |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,Nicholas Waller Date: 19 May 06 - 09:45 AM Weirdly, the following was left off my last post for some reason: |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: GUEST,Nicholas Waller Date: 19 May 06 - 09:49 AM Hmm. Something went wrong again. Last effort: Molly Bloom - acoustic alt/indie folk-rock band from Bury with hints of Jethro Tull, Gryphon and Traffic. And the aforementioned Duncan McFarlane is a popular regular at the Topic, in all his formats. |
Subject: RE: Current Folk Rock From: Les in Chorlton Date: 20 May 06 - 03:54 AM thanks Nicholas lots of amazing bands and lots of samples and downloads! |
