Subject: BS: If politicians had any sense From: Bert Date: 21 May 06 - 05:51 PM I just heard that a lot of US old folks are going to Mexico where their fixed incomes will go a lot further. Of course all of their minor ailments will be handled on the local economy instead of becoming a further burder on the US taxpayer. And they won't be needing extra assistance when their income falls below the poverty level. This is a great benefit to the US economy. And then there's all those illegals who are coming here to work. Most of them (with their forged papers) pay social security in income tax. Of course they can't claim social security benefits or tax rebates. And most of their minor ailments are taken care of by pharmaceuticals smuggled in from Mexico. They work for low pay. This is a great benefit to the US economy. If politicians had any sense they would work out some kind of swap. And a bridge would be a darned sight cheaper to build than a 1300 mile wall. |

Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: GUEST Date: 21 May 06 - 07:56 PM It would be be nice if you were correct, but you ain't, for the most part. What you describe kinda happens near the border but only there. I grew up in Texas and have spent most of the rest of my life in California. Been there, seen that. |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: Bobert Date: 21 May 06 - 08:09 PM Well, yeah, GUEST... Maybe in reality this model hasn't worked but, hmmmmmmm, maybe it just' needs a little tweakin'... It does seem to solve a few problems... I remember back in the 70's when my brother-in-law had to spend 4 years workin' in a hospital in San Diego as part of the loans the government had made him to become a doctor... Well, he was gettin' paid real lousy fir a doctor, 'er intern, 'er whatever he was at the time an' so he and another doctor were commuting in from Mexico where they had a real cheapie house on the ocean.... Yeah, maybe jus' a little tweakin'... |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 21 May 06 - 08:16 PM If politicians had any sense there'd be about a dozen posts to this thread. but I'm waiting for the 500th post - it's mine! |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: Rapparee Date: 21 May 06 - 08:20 PM ...they wouldn't be politicians. |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: Bert Date: 22 May 06 - 12:33 AM I don't usually respond to anonymous chicken shit guests but I assume that this one must be a politician. So GUEST - It's obviously truer than YOUR NAME. |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: dianavan Date: 22 May 06 - 12:38 AM "Been there, seen that" Yah, now all you have to do is figure out the doing part. |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: GUEST,mack/misophist Date: 22 May 06 - 10:35 AM I'm the poster that got Bert so POed. Can't see why. If you look at his idea, it's clear that it's only practical near the border. And guess what? That's how things are often done; near the border. |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: Bert Date: 22 May 06 - 10:46 AM Oh OK. Mack, it's you. Sorry, if I had known who it was that would have been alright. I've worked with many immigrants a long way from the border. And those who I know here in Colorado seem to travel all over to follow the work. One benefit to our family is that we can find a Mexican grocery shop in almost every town so we can buy a can of green chile now, wherever we are. They do have their own network for purchasing drugs smuggled in from Mexico and many do have false papers and pay social security and taxes. Perhaps if you were to get a job in construction you might get a better feel for what is happening. |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 22 May 06 - 08:45 PM Bert, You are alluding to the exact income/medical situation conundrum in which we find ourselves entrapped. It is a travesty of outrageous circumstances that I would wish on no one. ---- Art |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: GUEST,mack/misophist Date: 23 May 06 - 10:51 AM Bert may have a point, re the construction trades, but I wonder how wide spread that situation is. On the other hand, I know several Peruvians who smuggle cocoa leaves to make the traditional tea/tonic; a dangerous thing to do. But if they can do that, other drugs should be easy. On the third hand, I don't have to worry about finding green chilies, thank the something. The local Safeway even has them fresh, in season. |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 May 06 - 11:05 AM It takes quite a twisted sort of mind to imagine that you can run a country and the lives of millions of people. Most people understand that it takes an enourmous ammount of energy just to run your own life and home. Politicians cannot seem to understand this simple concept. They think they know best. If politicians had any sense? Nah. It will never happen... Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: If politicians had any sense From: Amos Date: 23 May 06 - 04:33 PM In a different thread on Presidential Secrecy Don Firth ha sposted a link to www.seattlechannel.org/videos/video.asp?ID=5070620 . In this link, John Dean speaks about White House and Congressional laxity. He makes it clear that the key element that is missing, in both the White House and the Congress, is the kind of integrity and institutional pride that once informed the government. A |
