Subject: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 May 06 - 10:18 AM I heard yesterday that Young's is closing the Wandsworth Brewery which has been there since 1581, and is moving to Bedford where it is throwing in its lot with Charles Wells. The dray horses which still do local deliveries will all be retired. The end of a long and noble tradition, I hope the beer will taste as good when it's made in Bedford. Giok |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Essex Girl Date: 24 May 06 - 11:17 AM Charlie Wells make good beer anyway. I've had many a pint of Eagle at Warwick. Wish you could get it in as many places as Bombardier!! Shame that they are moving away from London, but as I've heard it traffic conditions were making it very difficult for the drays and besides the land is worth millions. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Bunnahabhain Date: 24 May 06 - 02:52 PM So long as the beer is still good, that's main thing. Is it only Fullers left now as a major* London brewer? *Of beer fit to drink, that is.... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 24 May 06 - 04:07 PM Re the horses - they really do get retired, not just snuck out of the way and boiled down for glue - my aunt has one called Prince, a beautiful Shire, down in Dorset. They've been reducing the horse work for several years now, as the roads and traffic conditions were just too hard on the poor animals. Today's useless information brought to you by: LTS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 May 06 - 04:10 AM Guest - I'm sure my aunt would be only too happy for you to come and 'pick your own' from the stable.. she'll even supply the pitchfork! Last time I saw Prince (in Feb) he was gallumphing around his paddock, trying to roll in the mud and being soundly beaten to the food bucket by his donkey companion. If retirement is as much fun as that, I can't wait for mine! LTS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 May 06 - 04:32 AM At least it wouldn't fart so much as Manitas..... More useless information about the horses... In 1998 Young's shire horses took on the duty of pulling the Lord Mayor's coach at the annual London event. One of those horses was probably Prince, who retired after 2001. LTS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: The Barden of England Date: 25 May 06 - 06:11 AM The Youngs horses were pulling a Dray at Sidmouth last year for the 'Swan'. Just wondered if Prince was one of them? John Barden |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: GUEST,tony geen Date: 25 May 06 - 08:06 AM Ah, yes, Youngs brewery. I toured it once in 1981, on the same day that Ian Botham was single-handedly stuffing Australia. What a day ! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 May 06 - 11:12 AM No, Prince was retired before last year, but if they were in Sidmouth, they could have visited their old stable mate, he's only a few miles down the coast in Abbotsbury, Dorset. You can go and see him if you visit the Swan Inn there, he lives in the paddock on the hill at the bottom of the car park. LTS |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Leadfingers Date: 25 May 06 - 02:28 PM Breakspear's Gone and Now Youngs Gone ! Those buggers up north will soon be able to justify their claim to have the Best beer in Britain !! Though Breakspears still tastes good , from the Berkshire crowd and Wells DO do a nice bitter or two ! Wandsworth without the horsedrawn deilveries will NOT be the same though !! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Herga Kitty Date: 25 May 06 - 04:28 PM But yes, Bunnahabhain, as far as I know, Fullers are still brewing at Chiswick. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 26 May 06 - 06:05 AM Sad news, I enjoy a pint of Young's Special when I can get one. When we lived in Sarf Lunnon within dray horse distance it was my regular tipple. (Not to mention the Winter Warmer). RtS |

Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: GUEST,Mingulay at work Date: 26 May 06 - 08:34 AM Interesting that the beer is now to be brewed in Bedford. If you look closely at the label on the back of a bottle of Bombadier there is a legend written in foreign that suggests it it not from Bedford at all, but some indeterminate part of the continong of somewhere to the south of Dover. Maybe readers of foreign who have half decent eyesight can elucidate. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: GUEST,Brian Fenoulhet Date: 31 May 06 - 02:07 PM My late wife and her sister (Audrey and Maud) ran the Alma in Wandsworth for several months after their parents died within nine months of each other in the late forties. They well remembered the horse drawn drays and their father (George Williams) would run out and scoop up the steaming turds for his roses. Ah, well! The passing of an era. Nice to know the horses were well looked after in retirement. Cheers...and Adieu! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: John MacKenzie Date: 31 May 06 - 02:33 PM Fenoulhet, now there's a name to conjure with for us older radio listeners, if you remember Paul Fenhoulhet that is. He played with Jack Hylton and conducted one of the BBC house orchestras. Any relation? Giok |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: ard mhacha Date: 31 May 06 - 02:34 PM That brings back memories of strolling by Youngs on my way to Stamford Bridge in the 1960s, I walked from Clapham Junction I was fit and young, the walk was no bother, my Cockney workmates who I met at the ground never believed me, some Cockney `catter might inform me of the mileage. Sorry about those horses a bit of old history gone forever. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: John J Date: 31 May 06 - 05:43 PM We had a similar situation in Manchester (minus the horses) when Interbrew (?) recently decided to flog Boddington's Strangeways Brewery. Boddies is now brewed at the Hydes Brewery somewhere around Moss Side. John |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: GUEST,Alan Day Date: 01 Jun 06 - 01:26 PM This is sad news.Although I lived in Clapham I used to go past this Brewery on the way to school and then worked for a company in Garratt Lane around the corner from the Brewery. It was a pleasure during this time to see the Youngs horses working daily. A part of Wandsworth and London gone forever. Al |
Subject: RE: Obit: Young's Brewery leaves Wandsworth UK. From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Jun 06 - 07:32 PM Shame - especially about the working horses. Here's a picture of a Young's dray. There ought to be some way of retaining that even if they don't brew the beer in London any more. There's still Fullers with London Pride" - after the July 7th bombing I believe the sales went up because the name seemed so fitting. |
