Bats are our friends. They eat lots of insects and do NOT entangle themselves in women's hair. If rabid they exhibit the usual symptoms of rabies in wild animals. (There's lots of information about rabies in bats and bats in general here. ) You might consider wearing a dust mask when sweeping up.... |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Peace Date: 08 Aug 06 - 10:04 PM "What is the difference size-wize between a garter snake's scat and that of a python?" THAT is an excellent question. The kid will eat the garter snake and puke. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Aug 06 - 10:52 PM Okay, folks, I skipped straight to the bottom once the guano was identified as coming from bats. Sorry if this is repetition, but it bears repeating. I didn't click on Bruce's link, but Bobert, do you know what histoplasmosis is? It's a nasty lung infection that involves a cough and a fever and it lasts for weeks and weeks. My ex caught it when he was cleaning up a dead bat in Mammoth Cave where he was a park naturalist. The dust he stirred up was enough to infect his lungs. It is endemic in the cave country so the doctor he saw wouldn't qualify him for workman's comp, but we all knew how he got it. He missed something like 6-8 weeks of work and was feeling puny for quite a while after that, and took the first job offer that came along after that just to get out of Kaintuck and away from the caves. (And that's how I goddamned ended up in Texas, folks!) You catch histo from bird and bat droppings, primarily. You may have had a mild case at some time in the past, depending on where you live, and may have built up immunity. But if you haven't, check around and find out about it. SRS--taking this question very seriously. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Sorcha Date: 08 Aug 06 - 11:01 PM Well....technically 'guano' is bird poop, but bat poop is guano too And Bobert...this is some HOT SHIT.....let it cool out and mellow a while before using for fertilizer or you will burn the CRAP out of your plants and soil. Really. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Rapparee Date: 09 Aug 06 - 09:02 AM Yeah. Keep it in big bins and pour old urine over it. Let it work, and stir it every so often. When it's well fermenting, let it dry and then wash it. Carefully pour off the wash water, discarding the sludge. Evaporate and save the white crystals -- that's potassium nitrate and is used in making your own gunpowder! Yes! You can make your own fireworks! All you have to do is put up with all those complaints from the neighbors and your spouse and the Health Department and the EPA and all those sorts of nay-sayers and partypoopers. Of course, there is also a teeny-weeny bit more to it than I just described. I do suggest that you keep your house UPWIND from the tanks, though. (You can also toss in night soil, the stuff from old barns and corrals and cattle yards, just all kinds of shit!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: JennyO Date: 09 Aug 06 - 09:36 AM Bobert, you might need one of these to take your bat guano away. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Aug 06 - 10:37 AM He could save himself a few steps by mining the dirt in any old cave nearby. It probably has lots of it distilled down. But it also has that histo threat. Bobert, are you [cough cough] listening? BTW, despite the stupid Google ads for repelling bats, they're very important in the environment, particularly in bug removal and pollination. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Peace Date: 10 Aug 06 - 10:53 PM I wonder whether the ebola virus would be carried by the dung beetle. Anyone know? |
Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Mr Fox Date: 11 Aug 06 - 05:46 AM Googling 'ebola virus' and 'vectors', I found this:- Monkeys are known to be both victims (die of) of and short-term vectors (carry the disease for a while) for Ebola. Bats have also been recently discovered as a limited potential vector. Other vectors are unknown as yet, and it is highly unlikely that Monkeys are the long-term vectors for Ebola because they die from it as quickly as humans. Recently (January 2006) Scientists from the IRD and the CIRMF detected specific Ebola virus antibodies in the serum of three species of tropical fruit bats and revealed the presence of viral genome fragments in the liver and spleen of these bats. This discovery should not be confused with finding the reservoir or vector of Ebola - this simply indicates that it is possible that Ebola infected bats could survive and transmit the virus to primates. This does not indicate that bats are the natural reservoir, just that it is a possibility. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: open mike Date: 11 Aug 06 - 12:37 PM now, you leave my little beetle friends out of this... many organisms require warm blooded hosts and are not likely to survive in insects. I believe the adult dung beetle does not eat dung, just lays eggs in it and rolls it. Cowboys knew about this, which is why they were always singing "rollin', rollin', rollin'..." the larvae eat it, though. there are however some diseases transmitted by insects http://insectzoo.msstate.edu/Students/basic.harm.html |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Troll Date: 12 Aug 06 - 11:18 PM Here in Gainesville, Fla. at the Univ. of Fla., they have a bat house. they built it to try and lure the bats away from their roosts in - among other places - the football stadium. It worked. The bat house is located beside a small lake (Lake Alice) and people congregate in the evenings to watch as thousands of bats leave their roost for the evenings forage. Hey, everyone needs a hobby,I guess. I think bat watching is a little strange but what do I know? And no, I don't know what they do with the guano. troll |

Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Aug 06 - 02:16 AM Theresa, Sorry to read that your husband had such a bad case. One of the problems with this is that it scars the lung tissue, so once you've had it, you may end up operating at a diminished capacity breathing-wise the rest of your life.
