(I have lived in Indiana my entire life.) We had this on cassette when I was a kid, but it was stolen from our car when I was in about 1992, so I hadn't heard it since then (except in my head). I tracked it down today and now I have overlaid another meaning, that is making me tearful. My mother always loved songs about love of one's home or of a place. And this makes me think of her, since we always listened to it in the car, often when she was driving me home from school. It's making me think of her death (which was 10 months ago). Not of her actual death, but rather, an exegesis about bidding farewell to the place that you love because you're dying, and have faith that you'll shortly be in Heaven. Especially because she looked forward to dying, so optimistically that it was practically disturbing. In my new exegesis, "Home," is Heaven, and the ship is a metaphor, Charon's boat that ferries the souls of the dead across the river Styx. The only part that doesn't fit are the first 2 lines of the 2nd verse. I've written 2 new verses in my head. I have no intention of recording this song (I'm a singer/songwriter), however, it is helping me to explore my grief in a new way. I don't know if I can ever hear it the same way again. I haven't been able to listen to, "Water From Another Time," since my grandfather died, so I hope it doesn't end up like that now, but you know how it is...you write the lyrics, and then have almost no control over what they end up meaning to the people who hear it. |

All these years ago when I wrote it, the Scottish fishing industry was booming and, although species like herring were being seriously fished out, the herring fishermen all got bigger loans, bigger boats and went off to catch makeril in even bigger quantities. They made vast amounts of money but the local Cornish makeril fishing has long since gone into serious decline and the huge Scots boats don't go down there any more. They still search for makeril in the stretch of water between Norway and West Ireland but each year the shoals are either fished of pushed further out west. There are other factors like water temperature increasing due to global warming etc. What I was trying to say is you can't fish out one species and then go to the next without a serious crunch coming. I think we are now about to see that crunch. I sang the song in Peterhead (Scotland's main fishing port) and near got lynched. One fisherman, however, came up to me afterwards and said "A dinna like yer song but a canna deny that it's true" Whit an accolade ! Anyway what's this all got to with Chicago? Incidentally she is the greatest singer I know and all her albums are in the media of her native Gaelic tongue so check them out. They are on the Temple label and I think Flying Fish does them in the States. Anyway, about Indiana; I wrote the song and tune about 15 years ago. I was then living in the village of Ullapool in the far north west of Scotland and my best friends Tom and Val Brian had, quite a few years earlier, moved out to Terre Haute, Indiana. I had missed them a lot and I was delighted to hear from them that they decided to come back home to stay. They loved Indiana but the "old calling" was too strong a force. I decided to write the song, trying to seeing things from Tom & Val's point of view. I had never recorded the song but when my mate Andy Irvine was singing in Ullapool, he heard me sing it and "demanded" it from me. The oul Irish rascal did a really beautiful version of it but changed it into an Irish song - actually, I find it a great honour that someone makes my song their own. In musical terms there's nothing stolen between Scots & Irish but a lot of sharing. A couple of wee corrections though; Andy sings " and the shy hare runs so swiftly" I wrote "And the red deer runs so freely". Actually, the latest version of the song and my personal favourite has only recently been been recorded by Dave Wilkie and Cowboy Celtic, "The Drover Road" CFA-008 Centerfire Music. Denise Withnell sings the song and has a divine voice. Dave and Denise contacted me prior to recording and made sure that they used my original words. Another great version is from Nancy Curtens from Portland Oregon. And John D, I'm not from Oban, but what the hell, it, close enough. Actually I'm from Balintore ( a wee Easter Ross Village), lived in Ullapool for over 25 years and recently moved to the Isle of Skye. My day job is repairing things on fishing boats and I've been intending to do an album since we had big black round things with a wee hole in the middle. I've just never got round to doing it but if anyone books me for a wee tour in USA, then I'll do one overnight - Opportunist - moi - never.
