Subject: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 23 Sep 06 - 04:48 AM I'm moving to 88, Manor Chase, Beddau, Pontypridd CF38 2JE on Saturday, 30th September. My new phone will be 01443 206689; my mobile stays at 07980 474918. You are all invited to a PARTY! The Landlord said one morning to me, "Get out o' this house, it isn't free, I can't get no rent out of you, So pack up your bags and skidoo, you." "Listen, Landlord, can't you see, I'm getting money from the dole, you see, They said my shares were looking good this morning; Because it's MOO-ving day, it's MOO-ving day, Load the cart, let's depart, this'll break the landlord's heart, He'll have a fit when he sees we've done a moonlight flit, No bugs, no rent when you live in a tent, It's MOO-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ving day! (from Bob Davenport, with grateful thanks) Mick Tems |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Richard Jones Date: 23 Sep 06 - 05:48 AM Good luck, Dr Price. How do you pronounce it, Bather or Betheye? |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 23 Sep 06 - 06:21 AM Folks call it Bather, but I call it Betheye - I'm in the Welsh class! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Mr Red Date: 23 Sep 06 - 06:25 AM As long as it doesn't sound like a bladder disease! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 23 Sep 06 - 06:34 AM Hmmm.... Dr Price has got a nasty case of Beddau - I do hope he's going to be all right... |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: John MacKenzie Date: 23 Sep 06 - 06:39 AM I hope Bob Davenport thanked Charlie Poole as well. Have a good party Doc. Giok |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Cats Date: 23 Sep 06 - 11:25 AM Good luck Dr Price ~ Jon's old village! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Anne Lister Date: 23 Sep 06 - 04:25 PM When's the party, Mick? Surely not on the day you're moving? Anne |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST Date: 23 Sep 06 - 04:30 PM Don't let the movers drink until AFTER everything's moved in and sorted. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 23 Sep 06 - 06:46 PM Not Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers? Bob's a marvellous song carrier, but this is one credit I didn't expect to tick off. Bob was down here at Llantrisant a year ago, and as I drove him to Cardiff Airport, he told me he was retiring. Thanks, Bob - and thanks, Charlie. On Bob's version, he sings in the second verse: They put you in a council house, Then you get a carbolic delouse. There's not anywhere to go at night, There isn't a pub in sight. Next the cruelty man comes down our path, He's heard you keep coals in the bath; Slums were bad, but at least you had a bit o' freedom... Because it's MOO-ving day, MOO-ving day, Kick the means test man out the door, Feed him to your mother-in-law, It's MOO-ving day, load the cart quick and get away, No bugs, no rent, when you live in a tent, It's MOO-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ving Day. Don't expect the party just yet! The van's got to deliver loads of stuff at number 88, and we'll spend the rest of of the day just moving it. On top of that, I've got to drive down to Gower on Sunday to oversee the new CD being made by Crane Driver and SussexCarole, so the party won't be happening for a couple of weeks. Anyone who does want to call in and shift furniture will be most welcome - I'll buy the beer! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Richard Jones Date: 24 Sep 06 - 06:18 PM Beddau? Surely that means graves? |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Splott Man Date: 25 Sep 06 - 03:42 AM He's moving into my old house - pure quincydince - so I didn't bother tidying up after I left. Beddau does indeed mean graves or sepulchres. You should see the translation of Miskin - it's Mole! Good luck in the new house Mick! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 25 Sep 06 - 07:30 AM In fact it's Beddau Lladron, of the Graves of the Thieves - in days of yore, Beddau folk could see gibbets of ne'er-do-wells exhibited before them. Makes ASBOs look a bit weak. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 25 Sep 06 - 08:36 AM Olly lives at Gwaunmiskin, or Gwaun Meisgin - the Moor of the Mole! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Snuffy Date: 25 Sep 06 - 08:41 AM I thought Dr Price believed in furnaces, not graves. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: open mike Date: 25 Sep 06 - 01:04 PM giblets? in gravy? still no idea where pontypridd is somewhere in England i guess? i love this international forum |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 25 Sep 06 - 01:34 PM Somewhere in ENGLAND?????? Beddau is about six miles from Pontypridd, which is 12 miles up the River Taff valley from Cardiff (the capital of Wales.) Pontypridd is a smoothing of Pont-y-ty-pridd, which means (in Welsh) The bridge by the earthen house. Pontypridd is in South Wales - its rugby team is in the Welsh league! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 25 Sep 06 - 01:57 PM ...and "Gibbets" (wooden structures where the populace hang thieves) should not be confused with "giblets" (entrails which the cat finds quite moreish.) Although it's quite possible that a Beddau gibbet should contain one or two giblets... |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: The Sandman Date: 25 Sep 06 - 02:11 PM This is a very grave situation. why do glamorgan play in the england cricket league, and how come that only the county of Glamorgan, in wales, could field a decent team. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: pavane Date: 26 Sep 06 - 02:21 AM Mrs Pavane (Dawne) often sings in clubs in that general area - but not it's not folk songs for them! (examples: Hot Stuff, Simply the Best etc) Have a good housewarming. Regards Neil (currently in Amsterdam) |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Splott Man Date: 26 Sep 06 - 03:51 AM Glamorgan not only play cricket in Cardiff, Swansea and Pontypridd - all in the former county of Glamorgan - but also in Bangor. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Paul Burke Date: 26 Sep 06 - 04:08 AM If Beddau is Welsh for Graves, what's Welsh for Libournais? (I can guess at Entre-Deux-Jambes and PorthMedoc). |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Anne Lister Date: 26 Sep 06 - 04:11 AM We're still seeking enlightenment about why our hill is called the Tranch (Transh in Welsh spelling). Any ideas? Pontypool is easy peesy. Anne |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 27 Sep 06 - 01:56 PM Ooh - no idea, Anne. I lives on the other side of Kaardiff, me. Let me investigate the derivation of Tranch with certain learned informants. My theory is that it is a Welsh/English corruption, but of what? What's the news about Radio Britfolk? As soon as I move - and it's two days now, thank goodness - I can get to work. I couldn't work in that cramped, mindless hellhole! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: The Sandman Date: 27 Sep 06 - 02:14 PM DOCTOR how did you get on with payment, re captain cook. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Anne Lister Date: 27 Sep 06 - 06:40 PM No one has been nagging me for the Radio Britfolk stuff, but we should get on with it, I suppose. Good luck with the move, and let's get together soon afterwards to make some progress! We had meant to get to the club tonight to see Steve and Cindy, but family stuff intervened. Hope it went well! Anne |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 27 Sep 06 - 07:29 PM I got paid, thanks very much, Captain Birdseye. Glamorgan also play Rhyl, Splott Man - but there is controversy about letting England play when the Test Series comes to Sophia Gardens, Glamorgan's home ground. Tabster, Steve and Cindy were just great - read my review in the Gillette/Mangsen thread! |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Mick Tems Date: 29 Sep 06 - 04:21 AM Got it, Anne! This theory comes from Welsh-speaking harpist Alun Griffiths, of Ruskin Avenue, Newport, member of Gwerinwyr Gwent, who really knows the area: The Tranch derivates from Transh, Gwentian Welsh for a trench. Inhabitants of Pontypool used to grow potatoes, hence the saying: "Bydda i'n godi transh i tyfu tatws" - "I'm going to open a trench to grow potatoes." Interesting! My Welsh-English dictionary is all packed up (one day to go!) but I will most certainly look up Tranch. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST Date: 29 Sep 06 - 06:06 AM So, if you're in Splott Man's house... where's he gone to? |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Herga Kitty Date: 29 Sep 06 - 02:30 PM Hope move goes well tomorrow! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Mick Tems Date: 30 Sep 06 - 03:16 AM Pontyclun - just three minutes' walk from Llantrisant Folk Club! Spott Man's bought a house. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Mick Tems Date: 30 Sep 06 - 03:23 AM Today's the day, so I'm afraid I'll be out of touch until I'm installed in No 88. Shouldn't take more than a day. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Splott Man Date: 02 Oct 06 - 04:00 AM I've fallen back onto the property ladder, for a few years at least. I may be only 3 minutes walk from the folk club, but I still have to drive - too much to carry - and if there's a guest I have dinner at the Spoonsmistress's. I hope you settle in quickly, Dr Price, and say hello to the spiders for me, especially the ones in the bathroom. Splott Man |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Anne Lister Date: 02 Oct 06 - 06:00 PM Um .. I could understand the Tranch derivation better if it was a ditch instead of quite a steep hill. But maybe Welsh-speaking potato diggers are made of sterner stuff! Hope the move has gone well. Incidentally, oh Splott Man, we're still awaiting our dinner invitation from the Spoonsmistress ....*s* Anne |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 03 Oct 06 - 04:00 AM The only spiders I have seen are those fine, delicate whispy things with legs stretching approximately one and half inches. I counted at least 20, but they are difficult to spot. I've a mind to sweep them away, but I can't bring myself to do it - they must have working really hard, spinning away so diligently in their little homes. Now, there is a BIG bugger, measuring two and a half inches - the grandpa of 'em all. He flexed his muscles and positively growled at me. I can rest safe in my bed, however - John the lorry-driver has fashioned me two gargoyles. They are all-knowing and all-seeing and watch over me while I sleep. John's very considerate; John and Judy, his partner, belong to our club and love real ale and folk music (as far as John is concerned, ale and lorries don't mix - let's get the lorry home, and then you can relax!) |

Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 04 Oct 06 - 09:27 AM That's right - and there's a pork pie gone missing. |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: A Wandering Minstrel Date: 05 Oct 06 - 07:58 AM Hi Mick, Hope you are comfortable in your new home. Alas, Mama has moved away from Pontyclun so there are less and less reasons to visit :( |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: Splott Man Date: 05 Oct 06 - 08:25 AM Aren't we reason enough? |
Subject: RE: Dr Price is moving house! From: A Wandering Minstrel Date: 06 Oct 06 - 07:48 AM Well of course , but there used to be somewhere to sleep as well.... :) |
