"Saudis plan fence to block Iraq's terrorists

POSTED: 12:00 p.m. EDT, September 27, 2006

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- In a sign of regional concern over terrorism, Saudi Arabia is pushing ahead with plans to build a fence along its entire 560-mile (900-kilometer) border with Iraq to prevent terrorists from entering the kingdom from the chaotic north.

The barrier, which likely will take five to six years to complete, is part of a $12 billion package of measures, including electronic sensors, bases and physical barriers, to protect the oil-rich kingdom from external threats, said Nawaf Obaid, head of the Saudi National Security Assessment Project, an independent research institute that provides security advice to the Saudi government.

The ambitious project reflects not only concern over terrorism but also growing alarm over the situation in Iraq, where U.S. forces are struggling to prevent Sunni-Shiite violence from escalating to full-scale civil war. (Watch as one analyst says U.S. strategy is flawed -- 1:45)

All of Iraq's neighbors, including the Saudis, fear that violence could spill over the borders and threaten their own security.

For the Saudis, those threats could come from Saudi militants returning home to continue the struggle against the pro-U.S. monarchy or from Shiite extremists seeking to stir up trouble among the country's Shiite minority.

Since 2004, Saudi Arabia has spent about $1.8 billion to shore up its defenses along the border with Iraq.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have long complained about Saudi extremists crossing into Iraq -- mostly through Syria -- to join the battle against American and coalition forces.

However, Obaid said improvements in border surveillance had sharply reduced the traffic heading north. He said the Saudi government is more concerned -- at this point -- with infiltration into its territory from Iraq.

"More importantly, the main issue is to seal the border on the Iraqi side since there has been almost no [Iraqi security] presence since the U.S. invasion," Obaid said.

In addition to political extremists, the Saudis want to prevent drug smugglers, weapons dealers and illegal migrants from using Iraq as an avenue into Saudi Arabia, Obaid said."

Let me see....

Israel starts to build fence on border because of terrorists, many here object.

US wants to build fence on border because of illegal immegration, many here object.

Saudi Arabia plans to build fence ( for above reasons)- I wonder what the comments will be?

Isn't the problem with Israel that they keep building fences (houses towns etc.) in OTHER PEOPLE's countries?
Quack!

Not according to the Treaty of Lucerne.

Or the San Marcos Conference.

Or the principle of Land for Peace- No peace, no land. As long as Plaestinians do not acknowledge the right of Israel to exist, there is no reason for Israel to negotiate with them.

Or the border negotiations with Jordan ( the Jordan river, with minor exceptions.)"Borders: the agreed upon border was set to be the Jordan river, and if its flow changed, Jordan's border would be reset by the river's new course. In addition, Israel gave Jordan 300 square kilometers and leased 2850 dunams (2.85 km²) in the Arabah (Muvlaat Tzofar). The border segment from Ein Gedi to Beit She'an was not marked, because Jordan said that the Palestinian Authority should be a partner for setting this border. "

I did just get a pair of rapiers, and several two-handed broadswords. I have this tree in the back yard, you see, and...

ALWAYS buy swords in pairs:

Luke 22:35
He said to them, "When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?" "No, nothing," they replied.
36
He said to them, 12 "But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one.
37
For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, 'He was counted among the wicked'; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment."
38
Then they said, "Lord, look, there are two swords here." But he replied, "It is enough!"

My comment will be that this fence will be just as effective as the ones they will try to build on the American borders. Or the Great wall of China. Let's hope all of the workers the Saudi's hire are documented.

Maybe we should send somebody from here in San Diego to show them how to build a proper fence that is sure to secure their border. Sure, and we have no illegal aliens at all in California.

Who was it who said: 'Build a 50-foot wall and someone will build a 51-foot ladder'?

Walls and fences between countries are insane. A 700-mile fence on a 2000-mile long border between Mexico and the US may slow entry but it will have to be continually staffed and policed, and since nothing stays static the situation will either become improbably better or significantly worse. It isn't hard to visualize people shot and killed for trying to enter.

Why the US doesn't officially recognize that if there are no jobs for illegal entrants they will cease to come is beyond me. If businesses were closed and the owner(s) sent to prison every time they were found in violation of a no-hire policy, business would quickly resolve the perceived problem.

The Saudis? There was a time when cities were 'fortified'. If walls took care of a security problem those walls would still be there. There is a reason that practice was discontinued.

Modern technology = fifty foot fences. Is this the best you got senior? Hehe. 90 million to build, a $3 bolt cutter will eventually cause a nightmare in repair costs. As always react & treat the symptoms instead of looking to cure the cause. Are the Saudi's Republican or do they think that we are the cat's meow?

What? silly? hmmmpf! Nobody like my ideas!

Digging a canal from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea, turning Arabia into an island, would be a much more imaginative way of dealing with this. It'd be pretty useful too. Wouldn't make too much difference to people illegally crossing the border, but nor will this wall.
