I've not had it done but I do know a woman who has (in addition to both knees and both hips). She is still functioning- and happy that she got it done. Technology is amazing.

Well Louie, that is at least ONE that I haven't had!!! I don't have any real info on it but I'll be holding some good thoughts to send your way on the 18th. AND....you are bound to have a good outcome since you're having the surgery on Karen's and my anniversary. THAT was surely the best day of my life so I bet it will have some magic for you too (;<))

ROotin' for you, Louie. Probably you'll be able to flat-pick TWICE as fast afterwards.

When Spaw went in for surgery he asked the Doc if he'd be able to play piano afterwards, and the doc sez, "I don't see why not." So Spaw says, "Oh, good!! I always wanted to be able to play the piano..."

I'll get me coat.

Hi Roger.......My Mom's best friend who kinda' functions as a surrogate Grandma to my kids had it done in June and after a few hard weeks she was doing great within 30 days! AND......she's 80.

Look forward to a lot better quality of life. I think youv'e been "assured" correctly. Margaret spent the first two weeks after surgery in a rehab unit that works a program specifically for knee replacement and I know that made a difference with her. She and my Mom both had the tenacity of bulldogs. After being told she would live less that six months, my Mom cranked out another three years just to see me graduate. When the Docs told Margaret her surgical risks were great and she'd likely spend several months in rehab if she got through the surgery, she signed the papers and proved them waaaaaaay wrong. I think it must have been something in the air where she and my Mom grew up or something.......I'd like to have a few tanks of that air................................

We'll be rootin' for you too Roger!!!

Hi Roger,
I was actually thinking of your knees recently and wondering if you'd already had the op. I hope it goes well.
I'll try to get a new edition of my MOAT magazine out soon for some convalescent reading.
all the best

Well folks, I just got the following from Louie. Sounds like he's raring to go and now has a shoulder a whole lot younger than the rest of him!**BG** Way to go, Louie!!!

EVERYTHING WILL BE CAPITALS SINCE I ONLY HAVE MY LEFT HAND.SURGERY LASTED 4 HOURS ON THE 18TH AND WHEN I CAME TO, THE EXTREME PAIN THAT I'VE HAD FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS WAS GONE.ON THE 19TH I BEGGED PLEADED CRIED WHIMPERED AND USED ALL OF THE TRICKS I'D LEARNED OVER THE LAST 80 YEARS TO LET ME GO HOME AND THE DOCTOR FINALY AGREED WHEN HE FOUND OUT THAT MY WIFE WAS A RETIRED NURSE OF 35 YEARS SO SHE HAULED ME 180 MILES HOME.MY HAND IS STRAPPED TO MY BELLY BUTTON AND MY ARM IS STRAPPED TO MY SIDE,BUT WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE DOCTOR THURSDAY AND THIS WLL BE TAKEN OFF.I'M VERY HAPPY THAT I GOT THE SURGERY AND I WOULD ADVISE ANYONE WITH OBLITERATED SHOULDER TO GO FOR IT.I WILL HAVE 100 PERCENCT CONTROL OF MY RIGHT ARM WITHIN 3 MONTHS OR SOONER.LET THE CATTERS KNOW SURGERY WAS SUCCESSFUL. THREAD SHOULDER SURGERY.LUVYA LOUIE

Great! I was wondering about Louie.

What about Roger with his knee surgery? Quite a trick to have both knees done at the same time. A friend of mine did the same thing. There were a few dicey days but they healed quickly and he thought it was worth getting it over with more quickly.

A Scottish friend of mine had both his knees done - apparently you're not supposed to kneel down on the new ones. When asked how his new knees were going, he said they had ruined his sex life because

"Ah cannae get doon tae beg"

Hi, Gang,
Go for it Louie Roy!! Keep at the exercises.
Got my knees done two weeks ago.
Very, very painful the first week, removal of the drainage tubes was the sort of thing that should happen to traffic wardens and guitar thieves twice daily.I won't mention the catheter. Thanks to all the ward nursing staff-they were wonderful.
They let me go home to my retired nurse wife last Monday and today I went into town on the bus(driving is six weeks away)and I walked(wth canes) to the pub tonight for some medicinal rehydration.
It's looking good...
Roger

Today is 90 days from the time I had a complete shoulder implant and I still have a ways to go before I have complete use of my right arm. With the PT and the excersies I do every day I can get my arm up to about 11 O clock. In answer to spaw's question do I have my curve ball back I'll let you decide I lined up all of my great grand kids and from a distance of 12 feet I struck them all out,But I don't know whether I can run this by them again because the oldest one told me he was going to get a rule book and he was sure the pitchers mound was 25 feet.Anyway I know I'm getting stronger because I can remember when I was 17 it took 2 hands to bend it double and I can do it easy with one hand now.I hope Roger Knowles see this thread and gives us a run down on his knee surgery.Louie Roy

My dad had a new shoulder about five years ago. He now has fullish mobility but not full strength. You do have to bear in mind that under the English NHS he had to have been unable to use the arm at all for some considerable time before they did anything. Consequently his muscles had atrophied badly and he had to start virtually from scratch with his physio. He still reckons it was well worth while and once he has a shiny new hip to go with his bionic knees he should be running around by the summer (maybe).
Glad you seem to be doing so well Louis

Vectis,By the18th of February I will have the full use of my arm and will be doing windmills. It takes a lot of effort and a lot of time to get full use of your arm but you get out of it just what you put into it.I'm sure shoulder surgery today is far advanced from what it was 5 years ago.I wish your dad continued progress.I'm very happy with my progress and pain free shoulder

Anyone ever had Bursitis surgery ? I am going in for it shortly. Hearing all kinds of stories, none good. Dreading the every day things.

It is going to be Velcro t shirts for a month or so I imagine.

Anything I read tells me that recovery is slow and very painful.
I'm right handed, and the problem is right shoulder.

Guest the length go for it with a positive attitude and it will probably be one of the wisest decisions you'll make this year. I never heard of that type of surgery but I'm sure it is a lot less complicated than a shoulder replacement due to the fact that to replace a shoulder the have to cut all the muscles and many nerve endings on the side of your body the operation is being performed on and then cut your arm into and put in an artficial socket. The main thing is have a good orthopedics doctor.Anyway just an update I have complete use of my right arm no pain and still hug the prety girls much to the disgust of my wife and her comment you damn old fool

Louie-

My mother at the age of 90 had both her shoulder joints replaced. In a few days she was pain free and off prescription pain meds. In a few weeks she had regained full use of her shoulders. She's still actively painting at the age of 94.

She had very good surgeons.
