My nmae is Tom Hamilton, and I'm being haressed by wee boys, they fling stones, eggs at my window, they give me grief, they hassle me and then the police do nothing about it, this happened 2 years ago and I thought well, 2 years later they've stopped how wrong was I, and you turn around and say to their parents about them, and their parents turn round and say "oh no it wasn't my son/daughter." because their son/daughter are just wee angels arn't they.

I'm sorry for writtng this but I feel so angry, when these do-gooders say don't blame the parents, simply because these wee shits don't so anything to them or their house.

Tom. Document everything! Include discriptions of the children if you don't know their names. Take photos of the damage. If you or a friend could videotape an event that would be excellent. Take your evidence and history of past events to a magistrate, city council member, DA some such and tell them that the police just blow the whole thing off. Demand action and keep going until you get action. If there is a TV broadcast station in your area tell them about it. They will love the angle that the police are non-responsive. Fight back. In this present day culture (moral relativism and no-fault behavior)a criminal can be just about any age.

Try and catch them on a cam corder or mobile phone? Present it to the police. Wait five days and get in touch with your MP. If it is council rented accomodation get in touch with the housing officer too.

Your compassion is misplaced. Get evidence. Find out which other neighbours are affected. Hold a meeting - invite the cops. Tape the meeting. If the police are as sodding useless as you say, its a matter of public concern. let them say in front of witnesses they aren't capable of defending the local citizens against a gang of kids.

These horrid little bullies can be sorted out, by the police. They won't just be doing your house, there will other criminal acts. If the cops aren't on to them, they're not doing their job.

Tell the cops you are entitled to a police presence at the appropriate times. Tell them you expect them to exert some influence. If they won't - they're not really worth their wages are they, and the local paper should be informed.

Everything's political these days. The cops won't want the bad publicity. they will probably sort it out, without you getting heavy with them.

Believe you me, the cops will know all this gang and they will probably be able to tell you a few things they have done that YOU don't know about. they are usually on a short lead from the local fuzz. the police know how to yank that lead when it suits their purposes.

Be prepared to make it suit their purposes by weight of public opinion.

Careful though. I know of one person who was harrassed in a similar way. He used a video camera to record evidence- and was told by the police that they were considering prosecuting him for possessing images of children. Apparently any images, not just indecent ones, are now evidence of paedophilia!

Tom, I feel for you, my wife and I had exactly the same problem a few years ago, it went on for years but we pestered the police, we pestered our local MP and we pestered the council, eventually (and believe me it takes some pestering!)it was stopped. That's all the advice I can give, be tenacious, fight back legally!

I'm sorry Paul, but that sounds rather like the sort of urban myth masquerading as fact that one would expect to read in the Daily Mail or the Express.
Prosecutions are brought by the CPS, not the police, and they do actually need some evidence. It's not like the case of the over-zealous photo lab calling the police when pictures of naked kids are found, as has happened.

I don't, but if the situation really is as he has told you, I would suggest he contact his local Police Authority pronto, and also his local newspaper and other media outlets. Even, heaven forfend, the newsdesks of the Daily Mail and Daily Express. It is the sort of thing they would love to follow up. The Daily Mail can be found at 0207 938 6000. Paul is right - our local police are not allowed to take video evidence of children or even adults, without the permission of the person being filmed, therefore the evidence useless. Most police are easy about it, but can't use it as evidence against the perpetrators. (I think spelling is wrong)

The only video evidence that is allowed is official CCTV which needs council permission as well as police grounds for doing so.

As for the little runts having nothing else to do - there is more to do now then ever for children. It is just that these kids are so boring, that they can't think creatively for themselves.

THere is more entertainment on tv then ever, computers, games consoles, footballs at reasonable costs (certainly cheaper then a drink binge or weeks worth of cigarettes - not that I'm suggesting these boys do that!) Then of course there are many youth clubs and even such 'boring' things as scouts etc.

One thing that stopped many of my friends going out was homework or finances. There are even games on mobile phones etc. NO excuses, no reasons to do this than the fact that they are not very creative in thought, and barbaric, mind numbing behaviour is all too common around my area too. Their minds have been spoilt, largely due to other issues, on which I am trying not to make an essay. I had far less than these kids, I'm in my twenties now (not for much longer though!) and I would be appalled if my children behaved like the above.

Lack of responsibilty, and too much benevolence. Teens have always challenged authority, part of the process of maturing, but how the authorities deal with this behaviour only serves to lessen the little respect the teenagers had for them to begin with.


I'm sorry to rant on, but I am disgusted with the way a minority few can make peoples lives so miserable by forms of harassment which goes unchecked, even into adulthood.

I'll get off the soapbox now.

The problem is that there is a powerful entertainment industry actively promoting the idea that all entertainment is a form of consumption, and that do-it-yourself is necessarily second rate. If kids aspire to do anything at all, all too often it is merely to emulate the commercial packaged products.

This s utterly pervasive in our society, everything from clothes to food to houses to weddings to leisure activities, people live on a public stage where they are constantly monitored (and monitor each other) and checked for conformance with the consumerist ideal. Any deviation is merely failure to keep up, you are sad.

Sad adults (i.e. us) form mutual support groups and can defend their psyches- deviant kids are bullied and helpless. They often end up pretending to follow the crowd just for peace and quiet.

There always seems to be one on every thread - some idiot that will come along and put the boot in to the victim.

Regardless of Tom's posting history - and yes, I have seen him grumpy and quick to anger sometimes (a lot of us have been at times) - there is no excuse for what these boys are doing. He might need some help with how to deal with the situation. Does anybody know him personally?

Tom, read some of the good advice here, and when you are talking to the police, try to stay calm and if possible, be able to show them some evidence - maybe a photo. If they have damaged your house, show the damage to the police, or take a photo of that. Mainly though, don't give up. They will eventually have to listen. You have every right to quiet enjoyment of your home.

When I was in my teens and early 20s, we had neighbors who had moved in two houses away, and would literally lock their many children out of the house for the day. The kids ran rampant all over the neighborhood, terrorized the young paperboy, broke into our barn and had the audacity to ask my father if they could have the bicycles in there, and in the winter would grab onto passing cars' bumpers for a ride down the icy street. Someone stole two batteries from my car and I'm sure it was them. The police knew about the situation and I'm amazed that the children were not taken from the parents and put into foster homes. But then, that sort of behavior was tolerated then more than it is today.

Tom, is there some sort of child-protective service in your area? Perhaps you'd get more of a response from them than from your local police department, or from the parents who are in apparent denial and at the least need some guidance about supervising their kids.

But if you can control your temper and grumpiness when speaking to any of the authorities suggested in this thread, it will help your credibility in their eyes.

I agree with those who say that videotaping the attacks on your home will be very helpful (more so than still photos). I don't see how anyone could accuse you of pedophilia if the pictures you have are of fully-clothed kids in the act of criminal behavior.

I can attest to the fact that Tom Hamilton is indeed Scottish. I have met Tom at the Irvine Folk Club which he regularly supports.

Sorry to hear of the troubles you are having with the kids, Tom. It really is despicable. We had a problem with vandalism in our neighborhood - bricks through windows, cars spray painted, and one car was actually doused with a flammable liquid and burned! The police are pretty sure they know who did it, but have no proof. Now that the heat is on the vandalism has stopped, but it would be nice if the little brats had been caught and made to pay reparations.
