I've recently started a new thing- converting vinyl albums to CDs. I'm enjoying it a lot, but there is the problem of what to do with the albums. I'm told that I can keep them - but I don't want them. I make a CD master of each album and that's all I need.

Where is a good or logical place to go with them?

At this point I've just finished my first project and the albums are of 'The Chuck Wagon Gang' (all gospel- anyone ever hear of them?), a couple of quartets, the Stamps and the Statesmen, and a number of albums of John Denver.

They sound different, and the vinyl is a lot more durable. Maybe find a place out of the way to store them so when the CD dies you can burn a new copy.

DONT throw the vinyl out ! It ia a far more permanent recording than your CD as long as you can find a turntable !

Well, Ebbie, asking if I've heard of the CWG is like asking if Carter has Little Liver Pills! I grew up listening to them on the WJJD Suppertime Frolic and still listen to them to this day.   Rose, Anna, Jim and Dad, though as the years went by they became a lot like George Washington's ax, with the head replaced twice and the handle seven times, so hearing them today is not quite the same experience.

At work I still refer to that full stop between verses as "Chuck Wagon Gang Style."

I am 71 years old. I am not going to start collecting vinyl. Especially since these orders are coming from people who are trying to rid themselves of vinyl. If I kept each album I would end up with a bigger problem than the original owners.

I won't throw them away. I would like to find people who would prize them.

They are all in good shape. I found only one song in 16 albums that had a scratch in it.

Dale, I too grew up with them, and it was a real kick hearing them again. I don't think any of these albums are of the original generation, or at least not all four. I remember when I was a kid how much my mother preferred the first group.

Unfortunately there aren't many libraries anymore that would be interested in having them, and unless they are rarities, it is unlikely you could get much for them on sale at eBay or disposing of them at flea markets either.

They're like anything else, they are worthless unless you can find someone who wants them.

Of the ones you have mentioned, I would doubt that there are any rarities. As far as the CWG is concerned, and maybe the rest of the gospel stuff, I can put you in touch with someone who MIGHT be interested. It has been a good while since I corresponded with this particular person, but I could check if you wish.

Try putting them in warm water to make them soft and then mould them into vases or whatever else you can think of .... yuppies will snap them up at a market stall!!

Who I was thinking of was Harold Timmons, former piano player for the Chuck Wagon Gang during the years they had one. (The early groups were all a capella) He is a historian of the group and also has items for sale. I know he is on the up and up and would tell you if you had anything of value.

Including a blog (doesn't everyone nowadays?)and a discussion board. That could be a possible outlet.

I have not explored but may when I get time.

You could take up WYSIWYG's suggestions, they might be as viable. I have no vested interest in suggesting Harold. Postage is a big thing with vinyl, costing about what items are worth in some cases.

i have seen clocks and wallhangings out of old record albums
and big wavy chip bowls...but not for salsa, cuz there is a
hole in the bottom...not as big as the 45's, though.

maybe make a frisbee or disc golf type game out of them?

or a type of horse shoes where you throw them onto dowels?

best place to melt them is in the back window of a car.

In the UK we have charity shops (thrift shops?) we can give old vinyl records to, if we can't be bothered with the hassle of selling them.

I've sold some on ebay, but it's time-consuming to list them with full details, description of any faults, etc., and by the time you ship them you're lucky to make any money at all.

For 'prized' albums though, by artists I really admire, especially if the albums are not available on CD, I prefer to keep the albums for (a) backup purposes, if anything should happen to the CD-R; and (b) the sleeve notes, lyrics, songwriting credits, etc. (I can't be bothered to copy all that lot out!) - and even the old photos are on the cover are interesting sometimes.

I have lots of vinyl and won't get rid of it. I also have a turntable, and turntables are still available in most places -- a decent one will run you about fifty dollars US.

There's a whole LOT of stuff on vinyl that will NEVER be burned onto a CD. And from what I've seen "dee-jays" and hip-hoppers do to vinyl shouldn't happen to any music.

My late wife always used to go to look what was on offer at our local auction saleroom. One day she came back with 200 Folk LPs and four appalachian dulcimers. There had been a house clearance of an old folkie, and when we looked at the rest of the stuff that was on offer, we kind of wished we'd met him.

I thought my interest in vinyl was at an end... until my wife bought me a new USB turntable for Christmas!

This gizmo is a normal belt-drive turntable with RCA plugs to connect to your sound system. But it also has a pre-amp and USB cable! Packaged with Audacity and SoundSoap, I am now able to transfer and enhance my old albums/45's/78's/tapes, then take them to whatever audio format I wish. I'm choosing MP3 Pro at the moment for convenience and file size.

Am I now rummaging through second hand stores for old albums? You bet I am!

ah, YES! I saw an ad for that ION turntable...had almost forgotten.
I sure wish my budget would allow it...I have a LOT on vinyl to transfer, and only a cheap Sears turntable to play them on.....(I think it uses needles made out of recycled pewter beer mugs)

We have one of those ION turntable jobbies... it's great! Can be a bit difficult taking mono to stereo though, I've got one or two recordings that alternate speakers so if you're listening in the car (which has a knackered speaker) you lose half the song.

Now all I need is the same sort of gizmo to do cassette to MP3...

For those who like the Chuck Wagon Gang, you might give a listen to the Village Singers. They are not a copy of the CWG but have a similar quality.   Several recordings are available on emusic.com.

How about a time capsule?

Vinyl really does last a long time, which CD won't, so it seems like a reasonable idea.

Include a basic diagram of a machine to play them (remember, these things will play with a sewing needle and paper cone) etched onto something equally lasting.

If you copy, then destroy by intent the original, you have destroyed by intent your right to lease.

If you copy then give away or sell the original, you have also forfeited your 'right to lease'.

If you have something in writing from the 'owners of the material for lease', you may have more 'rights' than the above.

If the material is now legally out of copyright under law, the situation may then be different. If, however, the material has been reissued at a later time than the copy you have by the 'rights owners', then you may still be in breach of copyright by 'copying'.

Actually you are almost there, Liz. At the top front of the turntable just beneath the tone arm there is a little 1/8" line input jack.

All you need is a tapedeck, tape player or boombox that has a line output. Run a connector from the tape deck/player to the jack on the ION turntable. Now you can transfer tapes to CD or MP3 *through* your ION turntable.

All the same technology is being applied. The only difference is that sound source is not the LP!

In Oz and NZ, Dick Smith shops sell a turntable with pre-amp, seemingly specifically for turning vinyl to CD. Pretty fragile thing, though.

You could try boxing the LPs carefully and then building them into your house. Imagine someone a couple of generations away finding them, and searching for a way to play them.

I always liked the idea of time capsules.

This is interesting.....epn has just put all our heaps of vinyl onto CD and we have thought about what to do with them. At the moment they are stored in the loft. From what you say, I think they may stay there.

Regarding the difficulty of transferring mono LPs onto CDs (which can only play in stereo), mentioned by LTS above: you should (hopefully, depending on youe recording software) be able to record the sound from the vinyl LP in mono, then, once you have done this, open a new empty file in stereo, anc copy and paste the mono track into both channels of the stereo file. So you end up with two tracks, identical to one another. This has worked for me. Maybe not true stereo, but the CD player thinks it is.

There is a software programme called Magix Audio Cleaner which will convert mono to stereo or even surround sound effect.

Ebbie, get rid of the CD copies. Vinyl sounds much better, and the jackets often have background info on the music and/or performers. True, they do take up lots more space than CDs. BTW, in a year or so I expect you'll be transfering CDs to iPod and will be looking for a home for those outsized, obsolete CDs. ;)

John in the Sunset, keep in mind that these are not *my* albums- they belong(ed) to people who want(ed) them converted to CD. If I keep the vinyl albums I will simply have inherited their original problem.

I didn't copy the blurbs on the album jacket but I do create a numbered index of everything, separate to each CD.

The turntable that I acquired, btw, is a Teacc. It works great, seems sturdy, cost a little over $100. I plug it into my boombox speakers or listen to the cuts on my headset.

Before long, though, I expect I will be getting a more expensive Teacc- one that in addition to 45s and 33 1/3s will also let me convert 78s and cassette tapes. I know a lot of people who want their cassettes converted. Including me.

A CD may not hold up as well as physical recordings but there is an ease in CDs - repeat; programming; numbering- that you simply don't have with the others. iPod is different but I don't have it, nor do the people who are asking me to transfer their songs.

Incidentally, WHY is iPod more durable, more longlived?

Remember--I read this on another thread about vinyl on Mudcat--that 78s use a DIFFERENT needle. They use a thicker needle. And if you use the thinner needle that we use for our 33s and 45s on a 78, you can cut the grooves deeper, and RUIN the disc. I read it on Mudcat, so I know it must be true! ;-)

You can buy brand-new turntables for LPs.

   There are plenty of dealers in secondhand LPs.

   i'd add auctions to the list of useful places to dispose,if that's your decision.


   incidentally I recently reacquired my 78s from the ancestrals,looked for a turntable that could play them and one turned up in a charity shop a couple of months ago for £10.

   the world is rich in such stuff if you're patient.

Vinyl's gotta go-I just got a turntable that plays the LP into the 'puter, removes hisses 'n' scratches and the bacon sandwich frying effect so loved by LP enthusiasts,saves it to WAV files and you can then transfer it to CD. After that, then den gets cleared of stuff which I have loved since 1965 onwards.
I'm waiting for my son to help me get it going properly and then the vinyl going.

78s use a 2.5 mil stylus, LPs & 45s (Microgroove) use a 1 mil (.001-inch) stylus.

Note that there are many different 'equalisation curves' for both - many more for 78s especially for early 78s before 'standardisations' came in. Using the 'wrong' equalisation curve results in a distortion in the tonal balance of the recording - too much or not enough treble, etc.

You can get the right equalisation curve by using the correct sort of preamp that has adjustable circuits. The Aussie Mag Silicon Chip recently published a kit with all the technical data tables and suggested R/C circuit substitutions, even allowing several to be built direct on the circuit board and selected as desired.

Also many early '78s' from various companies often were recorded at differing speeds - 80 rpm, or other slightly differing speeds - taking the sound at the 'wrong' speed means that the perceived pitch is off. You can compensate for this with certain software packages.
