Subject: New festival in Devon (UK) - Dulverton From: George Papavgeris Date: 25 Feb 07 - 04:36 PM Watch this space, but a new festival is about to be sprung in Dulverton, Somerset (or is it Devon?), organised partly by the local council in association with the duo of Gill Tolfrey (she of Witches of Elswick fame) and Maurice Condie (Newcastle guitarist extraordinaire). Funding is already sorted and there will be four headline acts in concert, with a large proportion of the time planned for sessions. Maurice and Gill will be one of the four acts of course, and I understand that negotiations are underway to secure my favourite English male trad singer, JC (actually there are two, both my favourites sharing the same initials, but one is significantly older than the other; here we are talking about the younger one, not Johnny Collins). I don't know the full lineup yet, but will in a few days, and then I'll set up a festival website. Oh, I'll be there too. Being young and brave, the dates for the new festival are 27-29 July. So, if Cambridge FF is too large an insufficiently participative for you, or Warwick not your cup of tea (lovely festival though it is, I admit), then Dulverton could be the solution for you, clotted cream teas and all. More anon. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Devon (UK) - Dulverton From: greg stephens Date: 25 Feb 07 - 04:42 PM Well, if they want a good old Exmoor boy, I'd be avilable with the Boat Band would be available. That wouldn't half take me back to my childhood. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Devon (UK) - Dulverton From: Hawker Date: 26 Feb 07 - 04:51 AM Down here, in the South West of England, the Postal service are a little slow on the uptake of where a place is, I, for instance live in Whitstone, which is definately over the border in Cornwall, however, my postal address is Holsworthy Devon. I suspect that this is the case with Dulverton, that it may well be the postal address Dulverton Devon rather than the actual physical address. An easy mistake to make and George, I suspect not your fault, Thanks for letting us know its happening anyway! I am looking forward to meeting you at Miskin. Cheers, Lucy |
Subject: RE: New festival in Devon (UK) - Dulverton From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 26 Feb 07 - 06:01 AM I think the county confusion arrises when an address is not in the same county as the post office sorting office that sorts its letters. The post office tell people that their address is the county where the sorting office is, but many people refuse to comply. |

Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: George Papavgeris Date: 28 Feb 07 - 04:40 AM I have put up a website for the festival - www.dulvertonff.co.uk. It's still under construction, but bookmark it and return in a few days. Booked guests so far: Jim Causley, Maurice Condie & (Magic) Gill Tolfrey, Liz Law & Terry Conway, George Papavgeris. There will be two concerts, beginning at 8pm, on Friday and Saturday, and a shorter lunchtime concert on the Sunday. There will also be workshops on Saturday at 2pm and 4pm, pub sessions from mid-morning till whenever, folkie sports (I put myself down for throwing the bodhran, but with a 12-str guitar will have to excuse myself from the guitar-stringing race). More anon. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Scrump Date: 28 Feb 07 - 04:59 AM I think the county confusion arrises when an address is not in the same county as the post office sorting office that sorts its letters. The post office tell people that their address is the county where the sorting office is, but many people refuse to comply. Yes, it's important to realise that the postal address of a place does not always tell you the county it's in for that reason. I've had many arguments about which county a place is in for that reason :-) But it seems Dulverton is in Somerset, and a quick glance seems to indicate it has a Taunton postcode, which of course would also be in Somerset, so it doesn't seem to be an issue in this case. The festival sounds good though George - must see what we've got on around that time. I need to start filling in the gaps between the fests I'm definitely going to... :-) |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Moses Date: 28 Feb 07 - 06:56 AM If it hadn't been the Warwick weekend..... sigh |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Mr Red Date: 28 Feb 07 - 07:36 AM I will put it on my website in a day or two. I will be at Warwick. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Mr Red Date: 28 Feb 07 - 07:40 AM I always remember being moved from Staffordshire to West Midlands when the cartographers smudged the map, and it was not a case of dragging and screaming - I never used the WMids appelation. Mind you - the weather was far worse in WMids. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Scrump Date: 28 Feb 07 - 08:09 AM Don't worry, Mr Red, you are still in Staffs, whatever the bureaucrats say. The 'new' counties created in the 1970s and later are only administrative counties, and the original geographical counties remain the same. So, for example, Manchester, Liverpool, Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness are still in Lancashire, whatever the town hall jobsworths may tell you :-) |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: My guru always said Date: 28 Feb 07 - 09:39 AM Many thanks for your post-editing George, but it does make for confusing reading, especially as this thread hasn't been marked up clearly as a Permathread. Has the concept of marking 'Permathread' gone by the wayside? If it has, us mere 'posters' might never know if a thread has been edited. Not complaining, just concerned. New Fest looks good by the way, but Warwick is calling I'm afraid! |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Scrump Date: 28 Feb 07 - 10:06 AM I like George's ideas for 'folkie sports'. I remember a well known pastime as a student during rag week was the traditional 'putting a piano through a hoop' which involved breaking a piano into pieces small enough to go through a small hoop. The winning team was the one that did it in the fastest time. I can't remember where we got all the pianos from, but I don't think it was Boosey & Hawkes :-) Maybe we could have some other ideas for such sports, that could be done at Dulverton. We've had bodhran throwing and guitar stringing suggested by George. How about a shakey eggs and spoons race? You have to play the spoons in one hand and shake the egg in the other, and keep time while running. Or even when standing still. Or a Child ballad endurance test? A singer sings the longest Child ballads he can find, one after the other, and the last member of the audience to stay awake wins. Any other ideas folks? |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: greg stephens Date: 28 Feb 07 - 10:13 AM Well, my shaky egg competion would involve as many shaky eggs as possible, a flat surface and the competotrs clutching sledge hammers or driving steam rollers, as available. To make taking aim easy, the eggs could be put in clutches in bodhrans. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Scrump Date: 28 Feb 07 - 10:23 AM LOL greg :-) How about the underwater banjo playing contest? Whoever plays their banjo underwater longest without coming up for air wins. (Speaking as a banjo player myself :-)) |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: George Papavgeris Date: 28 Feb 07 - 10:38 AM Sorry - the folkie sports ideas were not mine, but the organisers'; I am just reporting them, and cannot claim any kudos. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 07 Mar 07 - 05:17 AM Sack[butt] race? Three-legged morris dancing? |

Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 07 Mar 07 - 06:56 AM For a minute I thought this thead was about this Exmoor Folk Festival but I see it's an even newer venture. Very Well Done Gillian n Maurice (are you from the Isle of Man then Maurice?) and hope you have a top time too George and Jim and all. We'll be down that way in Auguest for Sidmouth, Dartmoor and Bideford - three more excellent Devon Fests - way to go Devon! Tom |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: George Papavgeris Date: 21 Mar 07 - 04:54 AM The website is updated, you can now order tickets (excellent value) and check out the local accomodation web links. I addition, the guest list is augmented; it now includes 3 Mudcatters. The full list is Jim Causley / Maurice Condie & Gillian Tolfrey / George Papavgeris / Liz Law & Terry Conway / Julian Sutton & Tom Oakes / Steve Last & Christine Connolley. Also, on the Saturday there is also the Dulverton Fete taking place, with dog show, flower & produce show (and produce auction later), inter-pub tug-o'-war and *very special* a boving competition. I am not sure what the last one is, but I suspect it does not involve cows. Any educated or original guesses, or even explanations, welcome. Here is the website again: Dulverton FF website. |

There was such a glut in pianos that no-one wanted they were given to students to entertain themselves with (and obviously playing them was way too boring!) |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 21 Mar 07 - 05:59 AM I wondered if 'boving' could be something they get up to in Bovey, and apparently marbles (the little round ones, not the Elgin ones) were a feature of Bovey's past, so my guess is it's a game of marbles. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Scrump Date: 21 Mar 07 - 07:06 AM I believe 'Boving' is a shortened form of 'Bovril Drinking'. The person who drinks a gallon of hot Bovril in the shortest time being declared the winner :-) |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Scrump Date: 21 Mar 07 - 07:42 AM I forgot to add: the activity of 'boving' was commemorated in that old song with the chorus: A-boving, a-boving, since boving's been my ru-i-in I'll go no more a boving with you, fair maid ...I'll get me coat. |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Mr Red Date: 21 Mar 07 - 07:55 AM Give us a post code and I will put a map link on my site......... meanwhile I see Tiverton Railway St is 11.8 miles away. Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: Moses Date: 30 Jul 07 - 06:15 AM I second that. A really friendly, laid-back festival. My thanks also, to all the organisers. I know you all put in a lot of hard work as it all seemed to go so smoothly. I hope this is the start of many more festivals. And from me a special thanks to Papa-G (aka George Papavgeris) who has lent his considerable skills to running the website and nudging me away from other activities to join you all in this very enjoyable weekend. Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: George Papavgeris Date: 31 Jul 07 - 02:36 AM A great time was had indeed; and Moses & the Ref did themselves a few favours in the main concert and in the singarounds. Tom Oakes & Julian Sutton were smashing, and Jim Causley effortlessly smooth as always - and very generous too, he asked me up during his concert set, to do "Traitor's Love" and "Friends Like These" together ("Traitor" is going to be in his new album, due for release in a couple of months). Great weekend, can't wait for next year's. |

Super place & people, and good to have so much local support. Looking forward to the pickled egg & spoon race next year Gillian.. Vanessa (Did you get the pop-up tent back in it's bag Julie?!) |
Subject: RE: New festival in Somerset (UK) - Dulverton From: JulieF Date: 31 Jul 07 - 07:01 AM Yep Tent went back in the bag with only a slight struggle and I think i managed to keep all the slugs out. I've just put my photos on flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/10764641@N03/ I think you should be able to get at them as I made them all public but I haven't tried that site before. If not they are on Facebook if anyone wantsto be friends. The outdoor ones are ok but the camera is not brilliant for inside so very few concert piccies. J |
