A freind of mine is starting a new "coffeee House " ( even that disciption is a little under question ) for different forms of acoustic music and we are trying to come up with the sort of name that will draw great musicsians and a good crowd . I gave her a few of the famous old venue's : Passems ,Freight and Barrel, Sounding Board etc. My thought was "Friends of Aucousstic music " should be the sub heading to help everyone know the broad vision of the place. Blues players , Folk and maybe even some classical guys .
The address is 21 Main Street Bethleham ct. and it happens on the second saterday of each month.
My vote is : 21 Main St (friends of acoustic Music )
These are some other first thoughts:
                           :Paradise Found
                           :Acoustic Cafe of Bethelhem
                           :Secound Saterday Coffee house
The woman running this new venture is Virginia and I am hoping she will jump in as a guest and get some great feedback from our community who are so happy to have the support for our music .
Some have wonderdered if the term "Coffe House" can sound more like open mike night. She has had some great first months and I wish this new endeavor , All the best . Guy

Guy,

opinions will vary on this, but to me "Friends of acoustic music" as a subheading seems too long and also a little scary (as in "do I have to join?", "is it a members only club?" etc etc). Notto mention that "acoustic" itself can confuse - for example, do you mean that there will be no amplification? Or are you trying to imply a certain style of music? Different people will understand this differently.

As for the main name, ideally a single word - easier to remember, catchier, yet it must allude to what's to be expected there. How about:

Soundbox
Soundbooth
Earworm
Soundalike

Good luck with the venture!

"Coffe House" sounds too much like a retirement home.
"Coffee House" on the other hand, says it all. Why Not?

The famous Bethlehem Hospital in London, where lunatics were incarcerated, tended to be pronounced, and indeed came to be known as , "Bedlam ". The word has passed into the English language to mean general chaos and disorder !! The number twenty-one comprises three sevens, and for many, seven is a mystical & significant number. So my suggestion for your name is " BEDLAM 777 " ----- OK ??

I know of at least three Acoustic Cafe's. You did not mention the name of the city or town. Perhaps there is something in the local history that would lend itself to the name. Maybe the town football teams nickame could provide a suggestion.    My town, Bergenfield, calls the team the Bergenfield Bears. The Bear Den might work in a simlar situation.

Avoid names that will typecast you.   If you include the word "folk", everyone will be assumed to be collecting a pension with one foot in the grave. "Friends of" makes it sound cliquish. You mentioned that the street is named Bethelhem CT - unless you want to draw a religious crowd, stay away from "Bethelehm".

The sound hole

Man, I read this right after the "F-hole" thread and had an image of the vice squad raiding a folk venue with an ill-considered name.

21 Main St or Second Saturday Coffee House are going to be troublesome when they move to larger quarters or change the schedule.

We have a very nice expresso shop here (with music now) called Ten West, but I imagine it's gotten old explaining why they have that name, now that they aren't at 10 West, anymore. And we had a Third-Friday Jam for a LONG time, but it just wasn't the same when we moved it to the second Friday of the month. We fixed THAT be renaming it Porch Pickin' and that's the name people still know the whole long run of jams by, even though we haven't held one for several years! Hm-- I LIKE that name; maybe we'll start them up again this summer. At least it has built-in name recognition.

My nomination: Virginia's Ears.

What's in a name? A rose would smell as sweet. Etc.

But really wherever you end up makes no difference to what you're called now. After thirty odd years of wandering round the watering holes in our town, we're still known as the, "Jeppe's gang". Which was the name of the cellar where we started in 1975.

These are great . I do think the town name should be in there somehow so when people are comming over 50 miles they can find it . I agree that "freinds of Acoustic music" sounds a bit cliquish but how do we say this is an acoustic night and that the effort needs support <>><><> no drums and amps.(Bass Guitar allowed through pa ) maybe the name and sub titled "supporting acoustic music in the community "
I think Virginia would love to hear how club organizers pick acts as well . She has been getting demos from people so far . As they raise more money whats the high end of paying artists to getting the audience to come .
It takes years to get a crowd to come a distence for something like Battlefeild band and pay what it costs to break even on that kind of gig.Say $25.00 per adience member).
At the moment the auidence is paying $5.00 to get in and they are passing the hat for the musicians .The main plus is that Cd sales go to the artists in full .
As a venue grows I know they will balence a bit stronger to the musicians . I have to say the first two nights were magic .

Bethlehem Connection

if you did food, you could

La Salle a Manger (French dining room

only seeing as you you're doing music, you could pronounce it Manger - as in the bible

I agree- go with something short and catchy, even like "21 Main". Have Virginia check out our little gem here in Altadena, CA, which I will try to provide a weblink for at the end. Bob Stane, creator and manager, is quite the expert on these things, if she wanted to contact him for advice. Here's the link, I think: http://www.coffeegallery.com
