Subject: Lyr: Gin I were where the Gaudie rins
From: Henrik
Date: 17 Aug 97 - 05:26 AM

I have tried without success to find the words to a song called "O Gin I were where the Gaudie rins" aka "Bennachie". The first verse goes something like

O Gin I were where the Gaudie rins Where the Gaudie rins Where the Gaudie rins Gin I were where the Gaudie rins At the back o' Bennachie

Does anybody know the words for this one?

TIA

Henrik

I can only remember worthless scraps of it. Hamish Imlach recorded it on XTRA (with great fiddle backing) in the 60s. The same album had 'Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice" and The 37 Bus. (See below) Maybe, with good fortune, Mr. Beaton from New Zealand can recall these words, too. Great song. Great album.

Hey, it's in Ord's Bothy Songs and Ballads.

CHORUS (OR VERSE 1): Oh! gin I were where Gaudie rins, where Gaudie rins, where Gaudie rins,
Oh! gin I were where Gaudie rins, at the fit o Bennachie,
Oh! I should ne'er come back again, come back again, come back again,
Oh! I should ne'er come back again, your Lowland lads to see.

1. I never had but twa richt lads, but two richt lads, but twa richt lads
I never had but twa richt lads that ever courted me.
The teen (one) was killed in Lourin Fair, (etc.)
The teen was killed in Lourin Fair, and the tither drowned in Dee.

2. Had they gien my lovie man for man, (etc.)
Had they gien my lovie man for man, or yet a man for three,
He wudna hae lien so low th' day, (etc.)
He wudna lien sae low th' day, at the fit o yon arn tree.

3. But they crooded in sae thick on him, (etc.)
They crooded in sae thick on him he cudna fecht nor flee;
And wisna that a dowie day, (etc.)
And wisna that a dowie day, a dowie day for me?

4. The Dee was flowin frae bank tae bank, (etc.)
The Dee was flowin' frae bank tae bank, when my lovie dreed his dree;
And wisna that a dowie day, (etc.)
And wisna that a dowie day, a dowie day for me?

5. He bought for me a braw new goon, (etc.)
He bought for me a braw new goon and ribbons tae busk it wi'!
And I bought him the linen fine, (etc.)
I bought him the linen fine, his winding sheet tae be.

6. And now this twice I've been a bride, (etc.)
And now this twice I've been a bride, but a wife I'll never be.
Oh! gin I were where Gaudie rins, (etc.)
Oh! gin I were where Gaudie rins, at the fit o' Bennachie.
