(Guess you're referring to Denis Gibbons, Valda). Denis first recorded in 1954, and claims to have issued "the first ever recording of the original version of Waltzing Matilda" (more recently released on a Move Records CD in '95). I'm wondering how his recording of Australian folk songs compared to, of all people, Burl Ives (who toured Australia in 1952, and learnt songs from the collection of Dr Percy Jones, as did Denis). Burl Ives (with the Four Guardsmen - who were they?) issued a 10"LP on Columbia in the '50s of "Nine Australian Folk Songs", but who was first.....? (maybe a third part..?)
