Re. hangers on. In the Newgate Calendar (a collection of records of infamous villains, Dick Turpin, Jack Shepherd & such) there is frequent reference to friends and family hanging on to the victims legs to hasten death. The standard execution was hanging but this meant a slow death by strangulation, the 'modern' method of neck-breaking had not been developed. The victims were referred to as being 'turned off'.
