I just realised in my clumsy (but well meant) post above all the examples of success with iffy voices are gents. Apologies. Most of the lady singers I am familiar with can actually carry a tune, unlike that list of geezers. However, I am aware of female singers with fairly deep, even slightly masculine voices who have had great success. Not folkies particularly, but generally. Alison Moyet comes to mind.
