Seems John Hurt was a red herring - one theory has him as the missing Doctor Regeneration between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston. Read all about it here, but take some aspirin along:

For me the ideal Doctor would be multifaceted character actor David Threlfal - he could regenerate every month or so and still come out more convincing than that last two (I liked Eccleston, but would have preferred June Brown).
