Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Barbara Date: 24 Dec 98 - 06:33 PM BAZ, I'd be delighted to get you the tune as soon as I figure out what it is. Give her the words and tell her the tune is coming. I have trouble telling the melody from the harmonies in the Webber/Fentiman recording. It's on "Beggars Velvet -Lady of Autumn" if you want to buy it and try to sort out the parts yourselves. (grin) Otherwise, sorry, but you'll have to wait. Have a blessed Yule. Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: skw@ Date: 03 Jan 99 - 09:15 AM The Roy Bailey version is on 'What You Do With What You've Got', a 1992 compilation brought out by Fuse Records. It's the one original track on the CD, recorded live at the White Horse Folk Club in Beverley (with, as Roy says in his notes, 'a somewhat enthusiastic audience'), and features John Kirkpatrick on button accordion. The whole CD is a marvellous introduction to Roy's work. - Susanne |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Barbara Date: 04 Feb 99 - 01:44 AM Took me awhile, BAZ, but there it is. And a few minor corrections to the lyrics, too: (corrections in bold Verse 2 The gentry in its fine array do prosper night and morn...
Verse 3 Corrections made in the original post, Barbara. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Bob Biderman Date: 04 Feb 99 - 10:53 PM As I understand it, when John Tams originally wrote Rolling Home it was for a play in which he was involved. He only wrote two verses, "Round goes the wheel..." and "The gentry... ". His friend Roy Bailey really liked the song, but said he felt there ought to be more verses before he (Roy) could feel it was complete enough for him to do in concert. John then wrote the other verses. I first heard it recorded by Swan Arcade, who sang four verses, but not the one starting "The frost is on the hedgrerow..." Two, four or five verses, - what a great song!!! Bob Biderman

Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Barbara Date: 04 Feb 99 - 11:33 PM I agree! This version came from Dave Webber, and I don't know when the "frost is on the hedgerow" verse was added. Blessings, Barbara And thanks for pasting in the corrections, Joe. |

Subject: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 07 Jun 99 - 09:04 AM I think it's an English pub song. It refers to the ease and luxury of the rich, with lines like "while we poor weary laborers do plow the fields of corn...". It's not in the DT as far as I can tell! Thanks- this song has been waking me up at night! Allison Search for "rolling" threads |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 07 Jun 99 - 10:29 AM Gee, by the thread title I thought you were looking for an old Boy Scout song: I've got six pence, jolly, jolly six pence. I've got six pence to last me all my life. I've got two pence to lend and two pence to spend, And two pence to take home to my wife (poor wife). No cares have I to grieve me, No pretty little girls to deceive me. I'm as happy as a lark believe me. As we go rolling, rolling home. Rolling home (rolling home), Rolling home (rolling home), As we go rolling, rolling home. Happy as the day when a poor man gets his pay, As we go rolling, rolling home. It goes on with four pence, then two pence, and then no pence. Thanks for the memory! Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: Lyr Add: ROLLING HOME (John Tams)^^ From: Liz C. Date: 07 Jun 99 - 10:52 AM The missing bits: second half of 2nd verse: The rich may steal the power, but the glory's ours alone, When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home. Chorus The frost is on the hedgerow, the icy winds do blow, While we poor weary labourers strive through the driving snow Their dreams fly up to glory, up where the lark has flown When we go rolling home, when we go rolling home. Chorus The summer of resentment, the winter of despair, The journey to contentment is set with trap and snare Stand to and stand together, your labour's yours alone When you go rolling home, when you go rolling home. Chorus You've got the last verse from Dai. I could regret this but I'm going to rise to the bait and ask why girls shouldn't sing this song?^^ |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 07 Jun 99 - 11:00 AM Thanks Liz, you've saved me a lot of typing... There is, of course, no reason girls shouldn't sing this song. Neither is there a reason that guys shouldn't sing The Trees They Do Grow High, but personally I wouldn't... I've just always thought of this as a rollicking, rowdy, weekend-in-the-woods-discovering-your-power-animal kind of number, to be belted out in basso profundo while quaffing (yes, quaffing) Frog Island Owd Sole-Bender, belching and scratching. None of these activities can I easily reconcile with the ladies who attend our folky circle... no, really! |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 07 Jun 99 - 04:14 PM Thanks a million, Dai and Liz! The group I occasionally sing with does a rousing version of this whatever their gender. Two nights ago I literally leapt out of bed at 2 amwhen I heard this song roaring through my dreams at top volume- I took it as a sign that I should learn this song! I just finished explainging to a class of 4th graders why boys could too sing "When I was a fair maid" even though it doesn't apply to them- so I'm with Liz, I can too sing this song! Thanks again- Allison |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Murray macLeod Date: 15 Jan 00 - 05:49 PM Shouldn't that line be: "The gentry in THEIR fine array do prosper night and morn." Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Kernow John Date: 16 Jan 00 - 05:19 PM I've just got back from a gig on the southernmost tip of Britain (The Lizard), where we finished off with this song. It's one of those that folk seem to pick up real quick and leave the pub still singing the chorus. Thanks again for the Lyrics and music Barbara. Regards Baz |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 16 Jan 00 - 07:47 PM Lovely song - just back from the Half Moon session in Bishop's Stortford (Herts Essex border) where we ended the evening with it. But I always feel the fourth verse should go:
The frost is on the hedgerow
And I don't know if that's just my earthbound nature amending it, or if I heard someone sing it that way once.
Anyway, I post it here as a variant. (I know Roy Bailey sings it with the larks. One of his tricks is to get the crowd singing it, then nip out and come into the back of the hall to see how it's still going, and join in.)

Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Bugsy Date: 16 Jan 00 - 07:56 PM This is fine example of the "Folk Process" in action. McGrath, I don't think it matter which version you sing, the sentiment is still expressed clearly either way. A great song by any standards, and I was lucky enough to be first on the West Australian folk scene to sing it. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Barbara Date: 17 Jan 00 - 12:55 AM Murray, I have been singing "their" rather than "its" for a while, but another question on that verse was raised by a friend. We have all learned it from the oral tradition -- no printed words -- and he asks, "Isn't it 'The gentry in [their] finery..." Good question. I don't know the answer, and when we're singing it, it doesn't matter because most ears can' tell the difference between 'finery' and 'fine array'. Think we could get JOhn Tams to drop in and answer a few questions when he isn't busy being Leftenent Somebody on Sharpes Rifles? Blessings, Barbara |

We've been booked back for the season this year as well as at Roskillys and the Top House at the Lizard. Did we get a chance to speak? I was the oldest one with beard and pony tail and playing bazouki, guitar, concertina and whistle. If your back this way this year let us know I only live a couple of mile from Trelowarren. Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Murray MacLeod Date: 17 Jan 00 - 10:20 PM Barbara, I think it is "finery" as well, I am sure that is what Webber/Fentiman sing (and I learnt from their version). But "fine array" has its merits too .... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add:When We Go Rolling Home From: Penny S. Date: 18 Jan 00 - 12:15 PM Baz, there's a personal message for you. It's a really good bunch, good musicians (the sort who make me aware I can't even play the triangle) good repertoire, (which I wasn't able to give the attention it deserved - don't ask, Baz knows, and he's the only one who needs to), and I would recommend anyone down there to go and hear them. A high point of that clouded out, amplified out (from the speakers at the festival) week. I intend to give them my full attention at some time in the future. If you don't know the area, Roskilly's makes icecream from heaven, clotted ceam and the most wonderful range of flavours I know - fresh fruit in season - strawberry that really tastes of it, gooseberry, raspberry, blackberry, my mouth's watering. Baskin-Robbins, B & J, eat your cones out. Penny |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: As we go rolling home From: Herga Kitty Date: 06 Sep 01 - 08:29 PM I've learnt Rolling Home by osmosis - repeated renditions at Herga by Johnny Collins, Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman. This isn't just a drinking song but a deeply subversive and political one about the need for agricultural labourers to organise. By the way, Dai must frequent a very sedate folk club if he hasn't met women who quaff, or sing bass harmonies. He clearly wasn't at the Wareham Wail. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When We Go Rolling Home (Tams) From: arminia Date: 03 Mar 13 - 03:59 PM I fell in love with this song when first I heard it, sung by Ricky Rackin of our parish, and was amazed to discover that it was apparently commissioned for the stage production of "War Horse." Folllowing up on that thread led me to the production itself, the amazing life-sized'puppets' created for it, and the UTube recordings by John Tams as well as the rousing rendition by the cast itself -- all of which I recommend to Mudcatters for a really good plunge into the theatrical world. Following this thread in retrospect is really satisfying! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When We Go Rolling Home (Tams) From: Tattie Bogle Date: 03 Mar 13 - 08:02 PM "Commissioned for War Horse" is just a wee bit inaccurate, arminia! Bits of it do get sung in War Horse, but (from John Tams' own website!) the song was written "around 1987", and featured in a TV dramatisation of "Cider with Rosie". Only a few years out, but great song, especialy for rounding off an evening! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When We Go Rolling Home (Tams) From: Dead Horse Date: 04 Mar 13 - 01:55 PM I didnt realise that Mr Tams was an American - or he would never have used the word 'laborers' but would have used the English spelling, eh? Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When We Go Rolling Home (Tams) From: Barbara Date: 08 Mar 13 - 02:00 AM Not that I'd be flogging you, DH, but the spelling of the words [UK or AM] is dependent on the transcriber not the writer. Subject: RE: Lyr Add: When We Go Rolling Home (Tams) From: Barbara Date: 20 Mar 13 - 12:05 AM I believe I heard early on in the rise of Rolling Home (like about 10+ years ago) that the 'Frost is on the hedgerow' verse was added later and written by John Tams at Roy Bailey's request, as in, please make the song longer. These days most folks I know here on the left coast sing the last verse So pass the bottle round And let the toasts go free It's a health to every laborer Where he or she may be Fair wages now and ever Let's reap what we have sown When we go rolling home (2X) Blessings Barbara |
