Subject: RE: Ignore this - HTML Practice - marquee From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Sep 08 - 12:26 PM Joe, Would you tie this in with the other html practice threads at the top? I was telling someone the other day I thought they were linked like other similar topics are. I guess they aren't. SRS |

Subject: RE: Ignore this - HTML Practice - marquee From: Bill D Date: 26 Sep 08 - 04:56 PM This thread was when I still used Win 3.1 and Netscape and had never seen Opera! Now, in Opera9 ALL those HTML things work. Progress.... now I have a way to shout on Nov. 5th...one way or the other. |

Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Banjer Date: 24 Jun 99 - 05:30 AM I just wanted to be the 100th post to this thread which has so far been ignored 99 times since 6/21. Must be human nature to be drawn to things which advise against it! |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Jun 99 - 04:30 AM Lines up just fine in MSIE, John, and makes as much sense as your usual postings.... er, did I say that??? Just kidding, John. You usually make an inordinate amount of sense. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Steve Parkes Date: 24 Jun 99 - 04:01 AM Hard to say if it lines up - what's it supposed to mean? Looks ok in Netscape; just doesn't make sense. I know it doesn't, 'cos I looked at the html source, and that doesn't either! Steve |

Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Bill D Date: 23 Jun 99 - 11:12 PM hmmm...well, I am only up to Netscape 4.08, since I don't have Win9x..(can't use the Netscape 4.5X yet)...I sure would be disappointed if they were doing stuff like that...but if AOL is running things..*sigh*. I really like Netscape 4.08...easy to use and lets ME decide what I want! (maybe I will go try Opera!!) |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: reggie miles Date: 23 Jun 99 - 11:08 PM Katlaughing, my window came up as blank too but if you click (select all) which is under (edit) in your tool bar what appears is all of the posts in html form. Then you can choose which you would like to (copy) and (paste) from what is displayed and that's all there is to it. Reggie |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Jeri Date: 23 Jun 99 - 10:32 PM I was a pretty faithful Netscape user, but the last version I downloaded did some obnoxious stuff to my system, like constantly rewriting things to make itself the default browser, e-mail program, and other stuff. It was a real pain to get it off the computer, but I managed. Everybody's playing the game, not just Microsoft. (although they've traditionally been more successful at it.) The marquee thing doesn't work with Netscape, and the blink thing doesn't seem to work with MSIE. If computer geeks were folkies, they would have figured out how to swipe and assimilate these things a long time ago... |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jun 99 - 10:26 PM Well, Bill, it's kinda six on one and half-dozen on the other, now that Netscape is owned by AOL. MSIE may be the only one that can read the command, but Netscape is the only one that can read the command. Both browsers are actually quite good, especially if you compare them to browsers from a few years ago. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Bill D Date: 23 Jun 99 - 09:55 PM well, it ain't easy to take IE out, but you sure can put Netscape IN and never use IE except in emergencies...(Netscape even makes their browser stand-alone if you wish..which means no email, news, or 'push technology' built in..which saves maybe 17,000,000 bytes of space) I use Netscape 4, Eudora light for mail, and Agent for newsgroups..(one version is free and is called FreeAgent) [yep, I know...a body at rest tend to remain at rest..*grin*..I am just cheap & curmudgeonly enough to fight the system up to a point) |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: katlaughing Date: 23 Jun 99 - 08:50 PM I was able to copy and post, but only because Joe had it written out for us. When I went to viwe source, my notepad came up blank. I've not had that problem before, when viewing course on the Internet. Sorry....I do use IE....it was part of the monopolised package:-) katlaughing |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Bill D Date: 23 Jun 99 - 07:18 PM trust MicroSnot to invent a trick which ONLY works if you use their browser...(wonder what Bill Gates would say if his Mercedes could only use tires by Goodrich and gas by Exxon?) I will NOT use InternetExploder!!!!partially on principle, but mostly because Netscape simply does more neat stuff...Especially bookmarks! |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Penny S. Date: 23 Jun 99 - 07:09 PM The only ones I can't read are the ones with pink and pistachio surrounds, and Reggie Miles' first one. My cursor blinks on all of them. I could read Joe's first Offer, before he edited it. I've saved the source codes to look at but haven't had time yet to work out why. Penny |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Jeri Date: 23 Jun 99 - 05:03 PM All you guys who want to copyright your names, you can invent a silly symbol, like maybe a banjo with an axe through it, then copyright it, trademark it, or whatever. 'Course, if your parents named you Pliffleglitz, they could probably copyright it. So what happens if somebody names their kids "Exxon," do they get sued? (This would be a hoot if your last name is Valdise.) |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Legal Eagle Date: 23 Jun 99 - 03:58 PM Copyright cannot subsist in just names. Exxon spent a fortune working out a word which had no hidden meanings in any language, and was not too hard to pronounce in any language, and they tried to argue in the English courts that it was copyright They lost. |
Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jun 99 - 01:20 PM Well, if it's HTML that doesn't work in a good number of browsers, then I think we shouldn't use it in regular threads. It's fine in goof-off threads like this, but I think it's best to keep the garbage out of the serious discussions. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Jun 99 - 09:34 AM It occurs to me that, if copyright can exist on names, it belongs to the people who created the name - i.e. your parents. Hope none of you guys gets sued! Steve, © 1951-1999, Brenda & Tom Parkes |

Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jun 99 - 03:36 AM I was wondering if you could do that, Andreas. That's certainly very impressive. I see that some people have problems with this <marquee> command - do all of you problem people have Netscape? I would think Netscape 4.5 should handle everything that can be handled by Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jun 99 - 07:45 PM Ah, Gotcha, Reggie - I posted a sample version of my banner, using special codes so that the banner would display, but not work. Subject: RE: Ignore this From: reggie miles Date: 22 Jun 99 - 06:56 PM The moving sign uses the <marquee> command, Margarita. If you find an HTML trick you want to imitate, right-click on the page you like and choose "view source." Then steal whatever you like from the information that appears on your screen. You can cut-and-pase the major stuff, and insert your own changes. Instead of the number codes for colors, you can use the words posted in the chart Bill linked to. The code for my banner message is below. <P><div align="center"><center> <P> <table border="2" width=100% bgcolor="red" bordercolor="#008080" bordercolordark="#008000" bordercolorlight="#00FF00"> <tr> <td><font color="white" size="7"><marquee scrollamount="5" scrolldelay="1">OK, yous mugs I think I got the hang of this<small>®</small>-</marquee></font></td> </tr> </table> </center></div> <P>

Subject: RE: Ignore this From: Penny S. Date: 22 Jun 99 - 05:53 PM Andreas, thanks for that posting: I couldn't get into that other site, nanny wouldn't let me (Why, for Heaven's sake? What is there dubious about HTML?) I had a bit of an idea about what the six digits were up to, but not an inkling of how they did it. What bothers me now is why Joe Offer's first rolling marquee in a box is now illegible, but my cursor goes on the blink when it is over it. Same with Margarita's. Penny |
