Frogprince-

There is no end to alternative tunes for this "temperance" ditty but the composer Alistair Macdonald choose "Three Drunkard Maidens" as its tune and it seems to work quite well. It's also a traditional tune that's fairly well known on both sides of the great pond. Give it a fair chance.

I do think it could use a better chorus, something more to sink one's teeth into.

Maybe I'll make my next round Poland Spring on the rocks.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

"There is that jo-cose drunk-ard as you may com-pre-hend,"

That seems to work pretty well to the tune of "Come all You Texas Rangers", too.

You are correct and I apologize for initiating conversation about the G*****y. Here's a drinking song from our friends in Nova Scotia to wallow away in for the rest of the evening (copy and paste into WORD/TIMES/12 to line up chords):

Words by Alistair Macdonald ©?
After the singing of Vince Morash, Nova Scotia, 1995
Tune: "Three Drunkard Maidens"

The Jocose Drunkard

G---------D-G---C----G-----D-------G--D7-G
There is that jo-cose drunk-ard as you may com-pre-hend,
-----------D----G—C---G------D----G----D7-G
He's full of jokes and laugh-ter, and every-one's his friend;
---C---G---D-G—C---G-D---G—C-G—D-G-D
He slaps you on the back, me lads, and or-ders up a round,
----G---D-G---C----G-----D------G-D7-G
That jolly jo-cose drunk-ard's a pleasure to be found.

Chorus:

----C---G---C---G
And you raise your glass,
------C----G
Times have passed,
-------C—G-------C---G
And all the lads have gone home.

One drink beyond the jocose and then it's time for tears,
For now the drunkard is morose, he's crying in his beer;
He gets so sentimental, nostalgic and depressed,
He grieves for all he might've been and wails about the rest. (CHO)

But when the crying ceases, let the innocent beware,
For now the drunkard's bellicose, with fighting spirit rare;
He loudly picks an argument and wildly swings his fist,
So bellicose a drunkard's a pleasure to be missed. (CHO)

The drunkard then becomes subdued, the liquor takes its toll,
For now the drunkard's comatose, 'tis said he's passed out cold;
These are the states of drunkenness through which we all may sink,
But, before we all are comatose – there's time for one last drink!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

If all you're going to do in the COULDN'T Getaway Tavern is talk about what you did there where WE couldn't be... can I ask you politely to bugger off and talk quietly over there.. some of us are miserable bastards and want to wallow in misery without having our noses rubbed in it. If we want to hear what went on there, we'll look in the other threads.. OK?

And which one of you buggers has given me this cough? I sound like a bloody fur seal... Didn't have it till you lot came in....

Now mix me up a Jamaican Tixylix Mac please... 3 parts Tixylix cough medicine to 3 parts ginger wine and 6 parts of Jamaica's finest.

If I'm going out, I'm going out in style.

It was a success thanks to the marvelous skill of Flawn Williams, who knew exactly where the wah-wahs and the fit-fit-fits had to come in on every song. He's masterful at doing JUST the right amount of steering and letting the good times roll.

I will, Charley. But a correction is in order. The song is by Jeri, myself, and Rick. We all contributed mightily to it. Jeri wrote the original lyrics. She gave it to Rick and I some 4 or 5 years ago. Rick felt like it needed a chorus, and suggested some lyrics changes. He ran out of time before completing his version of it. I was troubled by one area, and felt like it didn't need a chorus so much as it needed bridges to separate the dialogue, and interpret what was going on in the minds of the players. So I wrote those and modified certain lyrics. Jeri actually inspired the tune, but I came up with that. She made a comment about how it would fit to Mary Ellen Carter, in a joking way. I took those chords, and started tinkering. All of a sudden the tune just jumped off the page at me. Then I arranged it.

It is a true collaborative effort, all built around Jeri's superb wordcraft. Jeri and I agree that it will be copyrighted as being by Corlew, Lane, and Fielding.

Soon as I finish with that, I will record it and post snippets on a Myspace or some other MP3 site.

It is a beauty.

Mick

Welcome back, and here's a small beaker of Jack Daniels.

Tell us again: HOW warm was it there??

I heard from Janie tonight, so good to hear how well (or at least alive) you all are, and how good the singing was, and a little about those of you who came out of your shells a little (is that lobster shell, Ranger1?)

If you had been there, we could have had a Getaway Polar Bear thing where we run down to the edge of the water and back in our MOAB teeshirts at sunrise, barefoot. Ya wanna??? Huh? :)

Yeah, yeah, now that we've got the serious drinking started they show up and tell us how Awful Things Were At Getaway.

Ya know, I forded icy rivers, I climbed snow-covered mountains, I fought off a hungry cougar with one hand while choking a rabid grizzly with the other as I punted a nest of rattlesnakes off a glacier, I crawled through swamps thick with alligators and skeeters, I crossed arid deserts rife with sandflies and bleached bones, just to get a MOAB tee shirt for Amos to wear at Getaway, and I'll betcha he left it at home.

Another, please. Sasparilla, if you got it. If you do, please throw it away and gimme some Monogehela.

And let me add, while I buy you a round, that the depletion of your store was definitely attributable to a set of at least three. Four if you count LEJ. And, ahem, assessing proportionate to body mass, I suspect Greenhaus, LEJ and Jessup (note spelling) might between them add up to the said Irishman. Just a rough approximation.

Excuse me..... but I wrote significant parts of that song, including the tune....... and one of the best lines was written by Rick. It is a very good collaborative effort.

But the body and main premise was Jeri's. What a stunner she put together. That one is going on the CD. She has such a way with it. She has sent me another one, and I really am taken by it. I am working out the tune, and looking at a verse, but it is another damn fine piece of work. We are so lucky to have her, but she needs NOT TO MISS ANOTHER DAMN GETAWAY.

Now ....... is there any decent bourbon in this joint??????????

The door flies open, and in walks the biggest damn Irish American fella you have ever seen. He looks over at the jello pit, now in a state of disuse, lets out a sigh of relief. Then he checks all the nooks and crannies to make sure no amorous gorillas are about. Finally he makes sure there are no horses tied up out back. He thne approaches the bar..........

Here, let me have a half dozen of those sammiches. Can't you see I am wasting away before your very eyes???????? Dani..... any bourbon in this place??? I had two fifths, and a pint when I pulled into that last stop, but Greenhaus and Jessop cleaned me out, and half of LEJ's too. But wasn't the music grand?..........

OK, hugs all around.

Spent the day locked in the basement under a mountain of laundry. I sort of ignored it before Getaway so I could get sleeping space ready for the Northern crew and by the time I got back ---Well if I heaped it together I think it would have gone over my head !!!

But there are pathways now and I can put my feet up and relax

What a great thread this is. But I got as far as Geoff's post of 04 Nov 06 - 06:46 PM, then got more or less permanently sidetracked by the link called "My Wine Recommendation." Geoff I have been reading Grant Baynham's song lyrics for 2 hours, LMAO. My favorite (are you surprised?) is the Transplant Patients' Anthem. Finally bookmarked it so I can get back to Mudcat and catch up with the posts on this thread.... Decided to post so the thread won't fall off the page before I can read it all. ;-)

Now, just hold on, you lot. 'Nuff of this maundering and guilt-flingng!!! Them as went to the Getaway had to work very hard to do so, so there's no need pretending that they didn't deserve the dark pleasures they earned!! Life is full of hard choices and some people end up reaping different situations as a result. And, I would add, not only did we have to pay to go to the Getaway, ahead of time, but we ALSO have had to pay for going to it, afterwards! I am just beginning to feel rebalanced. Partially.
