Wings make it a 6 game winning streak. Tops in the NHL next to Ottawa who has 5.
Your Senators are doing well Bobad.

There sure are a lot of Wings fans!

Maybe that's just sour grapes on my part. The Canes suck this year and I quit cheering for the Senators last year. So I don't really have a team to root for.

Speaking of sour Grapes.. He's not actually sour, just crusty. >rimshot!!@<

"it's virtually playoff hockey right now with so many teams competing for a spot"

And my team is once again awaiting their spot between the Tee Blocks!

Although, Orillia did have two teams win Provincial Titles at home over the week-end. The Minor Atoms defeated Fort Erie and the Major Pee Wee team finally put Riverside(Sarnia)to rest!(they had to play game 6 of a 5 game series)

It was a nice way to say "good-bye" to our old barn. After 60 years and many National and Provincial Titles in hockey and lacrosse, I'm sure I saw tears running down her walls!

Since it's short, here is the press...

TORONTO - The NHL's modified rule on blindsided hits to the head has finally received approval.

The NHL Players' Association released a statement Thursday saying that its executive board supported the endorsement of the five player representatives on the competition committee.

The temporary rule will give league disciplinarian Colin Campbell the power to hand out supplementary discipline for head hits on unsuspecting players for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

The institution of a permanent rule that includes an on-ice penalty - something NHL general managers recommended two weeks ago - will be discussed over the summer by the competition committee.

Thursday's announcement brought a peaceful end to a potential disagreement between the league and players' union over how rules should be instituted.

The NHLPA said in a statement that it hopes to keep working with the league to make the game safer.

I've dealt with literally hundreds...thousands of coaches/bench staff, players, officials and fans for over 50+ years in many sports, in many capacities and I can honestly say I don't think you can teach bad sportsmanship to someone who doesn't have it in them. I do however think you can nurture it in those who do.

There's one very simple reason and one somewhat more complicated, as to why you see all the cheap-shots and head-shots in all of hockey, not just the N.H.L. No fighting and they dress them up like gladiators! Most days through the hockey season I see "bone-skinny" kids walk through the doors of an arena, only to see them 1/2 later looking more like a Bradley Tank!

Just thought I'd drop in and make a formal announcement to the effect that the RED WINGS ARE BACK! Wings 3 / Pens 1. Not just because of tonight, but the last few weeks it's been coming on slowly but surely as the team has gotten healthy and started to recognize each other as a TEAM again - and it is beautiful to watch. My man - Datsyuk, the Prince of Thieves. Great game tonight - better because we won - but a great game was played, sharp and intense.

I'm glad this game was tonight because I start another chemo session soon and will probably miss the next one. Hello to all my hockey friends! Great game, isn't it? GO RED WINGS!...........Harrison

I was going to start a separate thread on what I have to say but than thought differently on it.
I am disgusted, disgusted, disgusted, on the powers that be of handing out suspensions. Ovenschin(sp.) deserved a hell of a lot more than two game. I love the player but this is a pure money thing(star players get off easy.).
The situation with the Cooke incident the same thing. Excuse me , but un fucking acceptable.

I love hockey and it would hurt it Zenburg(no time to check spelling .) or Paval were out for awhile for a hit, but it has to be done to star players and in big time fashion. A game suspension here or game there to set an example is completely out of context. It fucking doesn't work.
Here is the answer in my opinion.
If it is viewed to be a hit with intent(viewed by camera's,control center, ref's, players, coaches or whatever.), than it should be an eye for an eye. If Campbell is out for the season than Ov., on his deliberate push/hit should also be out for the rest of the season. There are very few star players but Ovenchin is one. However if the league wants to set an example than let it start now. If not, than I guess i can always turn off the telly.
What a f....f.... mess. What are these so call intellects doing. Are their heads up a camel ass?
Adrien( a die hard hockey up set fan.)

1-When they refer to Jr's, they usually mean the "Canadian Hockey League" which is the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. It does have teams that play out of the U.S.A. They also have Tier 2 Jr A(with some U.S. teams), Jr B and Jr C. They are all stepping stones to Major Jr. Some kids go right from Midget(usually AAA)to Major Jr. Lots of scouts at Bantam AAA games because that's when they get drafted to Major Jr.

2-Yes there are under 18's in Major Jr.

3-Very very few go directly from Jr to the N.H.L.

4-I would say University and College hockey is on par with Tier 2 Jr A. Age difference though. Up to 21 for Jr, and I think it's 25-30 for school hockey. But if you can make it to Major Jr, you go(almost without exception.

5- At the minor-pro level, if your not under contract to anyone, you can try and get a tryout in just about any league anywhere on the planet. If your under contract, you go where your told.

6-When drafted out of Jr, the team has two years to sign you to a contract, or you go back into the draft. Many players go undrafted, but still make it to the N.H.L. signed as free agents.

I coached a kid who was John Taveres' center in his last year of Jr with the Oshawa Generals. He's now playing in Texas.

OK. I'll take a stab at drafting "a question." This would go SO MUCH BETTER during a game intermission with a coupla beers! Or Beers! :~)

When NHLers say "juniors" do they mean all one league/age group/country?

Is WHL at the same level as Rimouskie? (Is Rimouskie also St. Mary's? I'm thinking Crosby thoughts there, have I got it right?)

Are under-18 players in "juniors"?

Is college hockey equal in any way to any level of juniors?

Is one's playing slot due to age or skill? Or is there a tiered system like NHL fed by AHL fed by ECHL, inside the juniors system? Do they compete into those slots?

Do NHL-drafted players get sent back to "juniors" likek Jordan Staal was maybe going to be, but then sent back up or do they have to then rise up thru the ranks of the pro leagues, and if so what determines at what level they start-- do they have to go to the ECHL first and then get sucked upwards to fill an open AHL slot for a game or two, or can they just be plucked out of juniors and signed for whatever level suddently scouts them as "ready?"

Is there a time or age limit on how long they can be in juniors before whatever NHL rights or contracts expire-- I'm remembering something from the Malkin thing where I think I recall he had to be in his draft team's NHL uniform by such and such date or his something would expire-- his draft status maybe?

My head hurts.

Is it really just as simple as "training camp" invites from scouting reports? Maybe it is, but then what are the contract implications, limitations, expectations?

Also, damn my Pens for pissing away ydy's lead (Caps, aaaargh!)! But Faulkner is now learning to WATCH TV and is learning the scorer's names. He reminded me ydy that he may be getting creakey-- but that he can still use his MIND and he's BORED!

Does anyone agree with me that sometimes, there may be some WWF-type theatrics involved in NHL games?

David was in his 5th grade class when the teacher asked the
children what their fathers did for a living.

All the typical answers?came up - fireman, policeman, salesman, etc.

David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked
him about his father. 'My father's an exotic dancer in a gay bar and takes off all his clothes in front of other men.

Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll go out to the alley with some guy and make love with him for money.'

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the
other children to work on some colouring, and took little David aside to ask him, 'Is that really true about your father?'

'No,' said David, 'He plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs but I was
too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.'

More:

Ballard swung his stick in frustration after Ilya Kovalchuk scored 8:54 into the first period to give the Thrashers a 2-1 lead. Using a baseball-type swing, he was trying to break his stick over the goal in frustration but instead caught Vokoun in the side of the head.

Neither the Panthers nor the NHL will discipline Ballard for his actions.

"It's a non-factor," DeBoer said. "This guy was visibly shaken and upset by the incident in the game. When we found out that Tomas was going to be fine I think he gutted it out and played the rest of the night for us. Tomas got on the plane and they had a chance to chat and sit together and there were no hard feelings.

"It's unfortunate. We don't condone it. I think organization's biggest issue now is getting the message out to the kids watching the game that it was a heat-of-the-moment play and it's not how you want to handle your frustrations. I'm sure Keith won't do it again and we're moving forward."

Ballard's night got worse as Maxim Afinogenov's game-winning goal deflected off his stick and into the net with only 5.5 seconds left in the contest.

"Obviously Keith has had some tough games the last few and the team has been losing and you see that frustration boil over in all different ways, whether it's guys taking penalties, whether it's yelling on the bench, yelling in the dressing room or whether it's slamming his stick after a goal," DeBoer said. "This one had some consequences."

DeBoer said no one on the Panthers' bench immediately realized what happened after Kovalchuk scored.

"Our trainers had to be called a couple of times because I don't think anybody on the bench realized what happened," DeBoer said. "I don't even think Keith realized he hit him. If you watch the video, he proceeded to hit his stick one more time after he hit Tomas and that tells me he didn't know."

Has to start with coaches defining what kinds of hits make them smile and what kind don't. It's all about ice time and who gets it. GMs can send that message too, at contract talks time, and by who they keep and don't keep. ALL of our teams have done the same type of hit for which we are now castigating a Hab-- if we admit it, we know this is true at some point in our teams' histories (if not now).

There has never been a team called the "Lady Byngs." If there were a whole team that played THAT clean, there'd be an award for it I am sure.

Well a very Big Happy Birthday to you Michael. Those gifts sound great and very appropriate for a Wing Nut.
Many more to come.
Adrien

Well, Happy Birthday to me! What a cool surprize; I opened up an envelope today and found that my brother had sent me down a bunch of stuff from the Free Press on Ernie Harwell - the grand voice of the Detroit Tigers from my childhood. Not to elaborate here, but I got to meet Ernie on his farewell tour some years ago and it was just a thrill of a life-time. I just love the man.

Oh, yes, lest I forget, also included in the envelope was a Detroit Red Wings jersey shirt with the #5 and Lidstrom on the back. My wife wears 40-Zetterberg and I wear 13-Datsyuk and we both have voiced that if we got another one it would be Lidstrom. Way to go Tim - great stuff!

Beer - you're right - stinking, stupid call. Cheers,.......mwh

Jack, you mean the last player on the other team that touches the puck, right?
Makes sense to me.
Thanks jack

"If I score on my own goaltender, do i get a point for that terrible afford? Or does it go to the last player on the other team who touched the puck? I'm not kidding, I really don't know the answer. Who gets the point??"

If you are talking about points in the the NHL statistics it is the last player to touch the puck that gets credit for the goal. If the last player to touch the puck on either team got credit I'd bet that the goalie of most teams would be the leading scorer. Remember when Gretzky used to bank it in off the goalies' butts?

If you score on your own net the only stat you get is a negative point on your plus/minus.
