Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 08 Jan 06 - 12:14 AM My wife and I got to see the Wings whup-up on the Stars a few weeks back down here in HOCKEYTOWN SOUTH. We're counting the days until the 21st of this month when we get to go back to the American Airlines Center to hopefully see the Wings do it again. There were an awful lot of red jerseys and shirts in the arena back in December and it was a lot of fun. I did, however, find my car had been spit upon by the time we got to it - guess that's what I get for having a rather large Red Wing logo on the rear window. GO RED WINGS! |

(CP) - Ted Nolan is awaiting a response from the New Jersey Devils after he inquired about their vacant coaching position. The former Buffalo Sabres coach asked about the opening created by Larry Robinson's resignation through a friend, the Buffalo News said. Devils president and coach Lou Lamoriello is coaching the team while searching for a replacement. "I'm always interested in coaching in the National Hockey League because I think I'm good enough to be there," Nolan told the paper. "To leave the situation I'm in now would be tough, but I know I can coach." Nolan won the Jack Adams Trophy as coach of the year after the 1996-97 season but parted ways with the Sabres after that season and hasn't coached in the NHL since. He took over the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL this season, leading the team to a 24-10-0-2 mark. On Dec. 16, he was subjected to racist taunts from fans during a 4-3 loss at Chicoutimi, prompting the Sagueneens to issue an apology. ~S~ |

Even though no formal complaint was lodge at the QMJHL, the Commissioner finds disgraceful the behaviour of a group of isolated individuals: "I find the events which occurred last Friday in Chicoutimi regrettable. The distasteful and disgraceful gestures and comments aimed at Head Coach Ted Nolan by an isolated group of spectators in no way represent the image of the Saguenéens organization, their players or the fans that attend QMJHL games." Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: bobad Date: 19 Dec 05 - 05:05 PM That sort of behaviour is totally inexcusable and reprehensible and goes to show that the Brits don't have a monopoly on loutish sports fans. One would have have thought that blatant racism was a thing of the past but it seems to be alive and well in Chicoutimi. It would be interesting to know if these were kids or adults. This makes me ashamed of my home province. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 18 Dec 05 - 08:55 PM So.... I spent some time the last few days looking at the UHL, AHL, and ECHL.... apparently there is a USHL too.... plus the various European leagues... a lot to sort out. But do any or all of those leagues play the "new NHL" rules? In other words, if a player is "called up" to an NHL opportunity from the monirs or the foreign leagues, are they already accustoimed to the new NHL rules and rink measurements, or do they have to adjust to that when they arrive? ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Dec 05 - 10:53 AM 10:16 AM EST, 12/15/2005 Penguins fire Olczyk, promote former Canadiens coach Therrien (from Baby Penguins) It makes sense to me.... Olczyk has been calling up player after player from the Baby Penguins, so it's only right that the management calls up their coach, too. The Penguins were a league-worst 23-47-8-4 during Olczyk's first season as coach in 2003-04, including an 18-game losing streak that would be an NHL record except that one loss came in overtime. But the pressure on Olczyk to begin winning increased when the Penguins won the NHL draft lottery in July and chose 18-year-old Sidney Crosby, considered Canada's best prospect since Penguins owner-player Mario Lemieux. Therrien, who coached the Penguins' Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm club to a 21-1-2-1 record that represents the best start in AHL history, was to run the team's practice Thursday and coach his first NHL game since the 2002-03 season Friday night against Buffalo. He was 77-77-13-13 as Montreal's coach from 2000-03. The 42-year-old Therrien expected to bring a much more disciplined approach to a team that has been criticized for its lazy work habits and inability to stick to a system. He emphasizes controlling the puck and creating turnovers in the transition game. ~S~ ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: bobad Date: 09 Dec 05 - 09:41 PM Beer, this is how the NHL explains it: NHL SCHEDULE FEATURES RIVALRY-BASED FORMAT NEW YORK (July 22, 2005) - The National Hockey League is returning with an exciting new regular-season schedule format that emphasizes division rivalries. Format * Each club will play eight games against each of its four division rivals (32 total). * Each club will play four games against each of the 10 non-division clubs in its conference (40 total). * Each club will play 10 inter-conference games, hosting one game each against all five clubs from a designated division and traveling for one game each against all five clubs from a different division. For the 2005-06 season, Northeast Division clubs will host the Pacific Division and visit the Northwest; Atlantic Division clubs will host the Northwest and visit the Central; and Southeast Division clubs will host the Central and visit the Pacific. Division vs. division assignments will rotate annually. Features * The new schedule strengthens division rivalries; division rivals played each other six times under the previous schedule. * The new schedule maintains integrity of the conference-based playoff format; each club continues to play 40 games against non-division, intra-conference opponents. * The new schedule allows for continued exposure of teams and star players from the other conference. * The new schedule allows for more compelling television matchups, thanks to the combination of stronger division rivalries with continued intra- and inter-conference play. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 09 Dec 05 - 09:27 PM I just don't understand the scheduling. It was my understanding that the LLeague was divided in two. East and West. Detroit being placed in the West. Not playing Montreal,Toronto, Boston and so on. When the play-off arrive then the top two teams will go for the cup. East against the West. The ?? is: How come Ottawa is playing Vancouver tonight out West???? |
