There are few countries hitting the target of 2% of GDP to support NATO. The list is Here
UK makes the list, and France get in by the skin of their teeth. No other major EU nation (except Greece, and, marginally, France) makes the grade! (Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland do!)

The G-7 was familiar to anyone who have had too many meetings in that:
"we agreed to have a constructive meeting to agree to have a meeting with ambassadors next time. -just not in Moscow or Washington".

The press conferences however are more revealing than what is said and not said.

pissin in the wind, just pissin in the wind
What a glorious feeling I'm in the loony bin
I'm laughing at clouds so dark above
The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the wind, I've a smile on my chin
I'll walk down the road with a lightened load
And pissin just pissing in the wind
Why am I smilin' and why do I sing.

I shall risk being shot down for "mentioning it," but I think it's worth pointing out that the US consistently undermines the UN by failing to pay its dues (we're talking many hundreds of millions of dollars) and, of course, by routinely using its veto to prevent any criticism, no matter how well-deserved, of the Israeli regime. The UN is never going to be amazing, but these things don't exactly help, and I think there's something very deliberate about these US actions. Its form apropos of foreign policy over many decades, and its constant undermining of the UN, strongly suggests a desire to be the world's policeman...

You are pissing in the wind talking about U.N. change. How many times must I repeat that it has been failing for 75 years. Only a fool expects to get different results by doing the same thing over and over again. I am not a fool so I shall not mention it again. How about you trying the same?

You are misunderstanding, Dave - if someone proposes an alternative to holding G7s, (in my case, focusing on improving the U.N.) it IS relevant to this thread you have started, and you should not take offence at such debate.

They may well do but we are talking about the G7 conference here where things get done by agreement. It's you that keeps bringing up the U.N. Do you have anything to add about the topic in question or are you just going to continue with your favourite subjects until the thread gets closed?

Try again re only "The U.N. are a toothless organisation that are subject to the whims of the nations with the power of veto" (Dave).

Don't the other "clubs" (EU, ASEAN, etc.), mentioned above have issues with veto to contend with?

this is what they will accomplish, that the haves continue having and the have nots continue having not.

Years and years ago, Walkaboutsverse was a problem. He would post the texts of his poems multiple times. I think he sometimes posted the same poem as often as ten times in some cases. So, I allowed him to post his poems once, and only once, in threads that were collections of his verses - and then to link to them where there was a need to refer to a poem. That's always been the deal at Mudcat - you're welcome to post things once, but not multiple times. We've also tried to discourage people from posting messages that were just links without explanation.
This is, after all, a discussion forum and not just a collection of links and copy-paste stuff.

Multiple postings of the same thing are just annoying, and smack of self-promotion instead of actual communication.

-Joe-

How many more times. The U.N. are a toothless organisation that are subject to the whims of the nations with the power of veto. They have tried their best for 75 years and failed to achieve anything of note. The only way forward is cooperation between the powers that be.

No, I'm doing nothing like agreeing, WAV. You keep telling us nations should stick to their own cultures. I believe we are one world and despise the idea of nationalism. Global cooperation does not mean that all nations are equal. There are those who can and should do more, which is where the G7 fits in. Now, unless you have something pertinent, useful, interesting or even humorous to add please stop trying to derail the thread.

In your Perfect World comment, in a backhanded way, you are agreeing with me Dave; if we move closer to the ideal, with improvements and less hinderance from other "clubs" (me), it is better for humanity.

For example, a discussion on climate change without a small nation whose land may literally disappear..? They should be on that round table, yes?

(PS: briefly, I got the message, Jeri and SRS, about going back to posting the actual verses rather than a link, which previously a moderator told me to do.)

If you post links OR verses they are going to vanish. Just. Don't. Do. It. ---mudelf

!Yes, WAV, in a perfect world, all would be equal. In a perfect world all nations would sit round a table and talk. In a perfect world there would be peace, plenty for all and you could post your poems wherever you like. But it is not a perfect world. The U.N. have failed. We have left the EU. Democracy is hanging on by a thread even in the most civilised societies. So we have to make the most of what we have got. At least by the most powerful nations on the planet getting together and talking there may just be a glimmer of hope.

Dick, if they cannot keep a cap on COVID at a meeting like this there is no chance of them keeping a cap on it at all. As well as the point I make above I believe they are giving the world the message that things are getting back to normal. Do you think that if this meeting endangered any lives it would go ahead? Boris may be a narcissistic sociopath but he ain't stupid.

WAV: No.

This thread is not about what WAV may or may not do, but since he seems determined to push the issue, he may not post links to his poems in threads other than his own thread. If he posts the verse instead it is up to the moderator to delete or not, depending on if it actually has something to do with the topic or is a fourth cousin to the subject and he is as usual spamming the thread.

Read the room. Please.

WAV, it's my last comment on this. When you respond to so many discussions with a link to YOUR personal website, and YOUR personal "poem", and say very little about the actual subject, it's spam. It's the quantity. It's the fact that I'm quite sure people see you've posted a link to somewhere, and think, "oh, God, not again", and that you don't really care about the subject, except as an opportunity to lob some spam at Mudcatters. It's starting to feel a little violent.

one evening in june by the light of the moon

the g7 summit took place that eve
lots of political big wigs on the 11 june were to be seen.

Jeri - you have been on here enough to know that others do sometimes respond in verse, so why not me? Over many years, I have sometimes responded in prose and sometimes verse. When I was asked to link to my poems rather than copy/paste them here, I did. If a poem is relevant to the thread, I should - equally with others - be allowed to continue doing that, yes?

The U.N. started in 1945, WAV. It has had 75 years to improve and get it right and failed to do so. It is obviously not fit for purpose so other alliances and methods need to be tried. The biggest hindrance to world peace is nationalism such as yours. Open discussion and cooperation like at the G7 conference should pave the way to one world.

Apart from some local government, all any citizen of our world needs is their own nation and the United Nations - no G7, UK, ASEAN, European Union, African Union, or other such clubs hindering the efficacy of our U.N.

Running and telling Dad, eh? WAV, you have known for a long time now that the insertion of links into threads totally unrelated to the content of your old poetry is twisting the spirit of the request that poems be germane, and you've been asked to stop doing it. Keep them in your dedicated thread. Moderation isn't discussed in the threads, that's the main reason your last couple attempts have been removed.
