Well Folks it is time to let you know that Ron Bankley will be appearing at the festival and God only knows who he could have up on stage with him. I'm expecting that the new c/d will be ready and the trunk of the car will be a lot lighter on the way home.

Hey Beer, I'd like to borrow your 'Blueridge' for an acoustic version of Hendrix' 'Let Me Stand Next to Your Fire'...

I'll bring my own lighter fluid...

trouble is.. it only works once !

They couldn't fit in the last word of the last song on the list in ReverbNation. This makes for a very provocative song title.

A group that was scheduled to play last year but the lead singer took ill is rescheduled. I have heard this local Montreal group on numerous occasions and feel that they will provide a very set. Stuart MacDougall of Bridge End Dairy Co. is the main singer and has some great numbers that he has written and I'm sure will be appreciated by all. http://www.bridge-end.net/

Sins.
Something to think about.

House: Provides the following.

4 Double Beds
2 Queen size
1 3/4
1 Single

Up to 14 people but I'm told that up to 20 have slept there. The others in sleeping bags.

Upstairs Bath and Shower
Downstairs 1/2 a bath (whatever that means.)
Kitchen facilities with Stove, Fridge, Pots and Pans and so on.
Large living Room.
About 10/15 minutes from Festival by car.

Cost: First person $50.00
       Additional persons $20.00 each

This sounds like a good deal and a party to be had.

Hopefully before the end of January our new web site look and all the participants will be shown. The preliminary design was presented last night to the board and we have suggested some minor changes. But all is going very well.

Well thanks for the nice thoughts folks, and I'm really looking forward to this one.
I would prefer to borrow a guitar than to lug one around. However, I am going to be around for a couple of weeks after the festival, visiting with a few folks. This means I really need a guitar for a fortnight.
What might work would be for me to bring my D28, and borrow a 12 string for the festival weekend. I play a Tanglewood, and I have also played and liked a Taylor 12.{Kendall has a lovely 12 string ;)]
It's a big ask, so don't feel obliged to go overboard on this one.
Regards
John

Sins
On site it is rough camping only. No electricity except around the camp fire. There is one rented outhouse. The boys can use the trees. The site is beautiful and there is no charge.
There are bed and breakfast a hop skip and a jump from the festival site as well.
I just found out that there is a house that is rented out and can sleep up to 20 people. I don't know if this is exaggerated or not. I will know in the next week all the details and how much. I will post details when I have them

Sigh. I hope you and maybe some other Mainers can make a journey there.

Have you been to the web site recently? Please do. After the main page comes up, click on English or French to enter. Once you have done this you will be treated (in about 30 seconds, dial up a hour or so.)to a beautiful song recently composed by our very own Ron Bankley. The web page in the next couple of weeks will also have a new look.

Just a thought John. If you want to leave your Guitar at home you could easily borrow one around here. I have a great sounding Guitar that you would be welcomed to use. This could save you a lot of hassle in carrying one around. I know it is not like your own Axe but it will still work.

Just though I would mention it.
A little news...............99% of the musicians for 2009 are booked.

Lots of other news to come.

I also think in work shops it is great. In fact I wish more question's were asked. However in the concert sets it annoys me when a musician talks and talks and only sings 4/5 songs in his/her set.

I think the talking and the interacting in workshop settings is a good thing. When I think back to the Mariposa Folk Festivals of the 1970s, that's what the festival was really about. It wasn't the concert stage where eveyone did their own thing. What I really like about the Ottawa Folk Festival is they devotr several stages all day long to that kind of interaction and leave the concert sets to the evening.

I know time can slip away and I wouldn't want performers to feel rushed, but timing really is their responsibility--especially when they're in a group setting. Mike tried, but about all a host can do is let people know they have to be brief to give everyone a chance. He did that. I really do think it was a 'this year, this act, this position on stage' thing.

At 90 minutes, everyone, including Mike would have had 15 minutes total, or two 7.5 minute songs. Mike definitely didn't talk for 15 minutes, so everyone else took longer than that. There was some time spent in folks talking back and forth, and that interaction was a good thing.

I guess the bottom line for me is that I really enjoyed the workshop and I would have been happy if it had been given MORE time. You had an amazing combination of performers and it was a very special opportunity to have them on stage at the same time.

Musicians can be a difficult lot, often unfamiliar with time not measured in "bars" (pun intended). Probably easier to herd geese! I can offer no advice, Beer; only sympathy!

One problem was the length of some people's turns. One act did a 10 (at least) minute song AFTER it was announced time was short. A few people in the audience near me commented on them. I don't know if less time would be effective as having musicians that understand time constraints and are considerate enough to give others their turns.

Personally, I really enjoyed that workshop, aside from being irritated at the act that ran down the clock. I think that was an anomaly and that sort of thing isn't likely to happen again.

Hi Ham.
I certainly hope the song writers' session will take place again. I have been giving it some thought as well. I may cut it back to 60 minutes instead of 90 minutes. Or cutting the number of musicians in the session down. Reason for this is that on the second time around not all the musicians' got to play because the 90 minutes ran out. In fact the session ate into the next performance time which was not fare. So something to ponder on for a while.

Adrien,

I'm delighted to hear that Apple Hollow will return next summer. My favourite part of most folk festivals is the afternoon workshop sessions when well chosen artists work with the right host or animator. Some festivals do that very well and you had one such session last year when Mike hosted the songwriters. I hope you'll have more like that.

The devil is in the details. Speaking of which: A kid was asked to use these four words--defeat, deduct, defense and detail. He pondered, scratched his head and said, "The feat of da duck went over da fence before da tail."

They were GOATS. Jeeze, we have STANDARDS in Canada!
