From: Peter the Squeezer Date: 09 Oct 20 - 04:56 AM Definitely acoustic, definitely metal (bronze), and moderately heavy - depends on the number. 13 cwt is quite heavy for 5 or 6, but light-ish for 10 or 12. From: GUEST,Claire M Date: 07 Oct 20 - 03:27 PM Well, when I used to go out, I wore lots of finely wrought copper, brass, pewter, & have no arm strength at all. So said metal is extremely heavy!! Discharged myself from hospital w/ severe breathing problems caused by undiagnosed sleep apnoea to see Iron Maiden, w/ a crush on Bruce the size of the whole world. Care home on red alert, severe lockdown for covid-19, Found 1 of my 2 copies of the love of my life’s autobiography, started listening again So I do like it.( ?? ?? ?? ) |
Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: GUEST,MCSquared Date: 05 Feb 00 - 02:03 PM I always consider GnR, Motley Crue, and the rest of the 80s hair bands, and most of the foundational 70s stuff like Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy, "hard rock" while I reserved "heavy metal" for bands like Slayer, Iron Maiden, Anthrax (not very good IMHO), Pantera, and Megadeth. Then there'st the so-called "black metal" or "death metal" bands like Sepultura, Canibal Corpse, Napalm Death, etc. Kind of surprised nobody mentioned any of them. Had a friend in college who used to explain the musical structure behind death metal music... It's loud, aggressive, and very repetetive. Anyway, Metallica is by far the best of this genre that I know of, and I think Iron Maiden, esp. their first album, is also quite good. Some Megadeth stuff, esp. Rust in Peace, is also good, though Dave Mustaine's squeeky voice and shallow political ravings are annoying as heck. Did I mention that this is a really cool site? |

Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: Ebbie Date: 05 Feb 00 - 12:14 AM Good gracious- when do you all have the time to listen to/research/compare all these groups? What with having folk/bluegrass/country/Irish gigs and jams and harmony singing classes up to 4 times a week and learning lyrics and writing songs in between, I wouldn't -couldn't- dream of adding such an alien sound to my life. I know, different strokes, etc, but... Assuming you are young, do you plan to someday gather around the table with your children to sing along with your favorite rock group? Not to even mention Heavy Metal! I will now subside. :~) Ebbie |
Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: BlueJay Date: 04 Feb 00 - 02:35 PM Not trying to be closed minded, but I don't care for the "metal" genre. Led Zep, iron butterfly et. al. may have been precursers, but i don't think they really fit in to todays understanding of "heavy metal'. Had The New York Rock Ensemble continued, they may have evolved into the PREMIERE heavy metal band, the influence is obvious an some of their tunes. We would have probably had much more talented metal bands today if they had to compete with Michael Kamen, who now does mostly movie work. |

I would have completely forgotten Thor who used to play among other the places the Knob Hill Hotel, (the Knobby)in the 70's. Can't remember if they were any good (I kind of doubt it) but that was their claim to fame, a body builder lead singer who would blow up a hot water bottle. Man, how did I remember that? |

Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: GUEST,Jack Date: 02 Feb 00 - 02:31 PM Very much, 'specially the old stuff. Deep Purple, Hawkwind, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, early Black Sabbath (Paranoid & Iron man rule), Blue Oyster Cult aint bad either. Funny, but for me, I like heavy metal for the same reason I like a lot of folk music. At its heart its a home grown music--not necessarily complex or polished, although the technical ability of some of the players is astounding. Most of these guys formed their style and vision alone in their bedrooms and garages and hacked out their careers in dives on the roads. |
Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: Mbo Date: 02 Feb 00 - 02:12 PM My favorite grunge band is Stone Temple Pilots. Their song "Interstate Love Song" is well-loved by all members of my family (it starts off "THE tape") also the song "Big Empty" rules, especially the acoustic slide guitar solos--oops! forgot to mention "Plush" also by STP. As I put it, one of the most perfect songs in modern rock. --Mbo |
Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: Lonesome EJ Date: 02 Feb 00 - 02:02 PM Ok, my true Heavy Metal Days came early on- Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly,Humble Pie, Tull in their "New Day Yesterday" phase. I really liked Thin Lizzy in the mid-seventies, and got into some Van Halen and AC/DC. I also found myself listening with interest to the heavy metal/grunge bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Never really liked the hair and glam bands like Metallica, Motley Crue, Guns and Roses... too formulaic, I guess. Too much current metal comes under the heading "been there-done that." |

Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: reggie miles Date: 02 Feb 00 - 01:10 PM Playing a heavy metal guitar, (mostly brass), washboard, (again mostly brass) and a razor sharp handtool (musical saw-spring steel), folks often request tunes from this genre. I usually attempt these tunes but explain that my influences are from much earlier sources. In fact many of these bands have similar roots, they just carry their interpretations/influences to further extremes than I am presently willing to explore. |
Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: Wesley S Date: 02 Feb 00 - 12:44 PM From what I've heard the first time the words "heavy metal thunder" were used was in Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf. The phrase heavy metal came from there. Also - Peg - the stuff about Jethro Tull winning the first grammy for "Heavy Metal" was a million dollar question on "Who wants to be a Millionaire". I was screaming at the TV that I knew the answer - however I was ignoring the fact that I was clueless about the question before it - the real name of one of the Popes before he became a priest. Money slips through my fingers somedays. |

Very very folkish--not metal sounding at all. I'm really surprised by the responses--with this being a "folk/blues" site, there's been no violent condemnations of this sort of music. It's good to know we're all interested in so many genres! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: Peg Date: 02 Feb 00 - 11:49 AM Gary T.: interesting theory about the moniker Heavy Metal; I had never heard that before. I was told in high school, when I asked my fellow metal heads, that it had to do with the style of guitar playing, i.e. distortion and fast solos and a "heavy" harsh sound like, well, metal grinding... that said, the bands I liked back in those days included: Sabbath (Ozzy was my first concert ever!),Rainbow w/Ritchie Blackmore, Judas Priest, AC/DC...also Kansas, who started out being more "progressive" than metal... also Blue Oyster Cult, Uriah Heep (great in concert!) and The Moody Blues (not metal but I really liked them, then and now)...and i liked some early Zeppelin...also Fever Tree, Klaatu, and King Crimson... also a big Jethro Tull fan; the only folks who think they ae heavy metal however are the Grammy Awards geniuses who nominated them for best in that category one year; they won! and Ian and company scratched their heads and giggled when accepting their statuette... peg |
Subject: RE: Does anyone here like Heavy Metal? From: Blackcat2 Date: 02 Feb 00 - 11:28 AM Led Zeppelin is one of those groups that cannot be contained in one (or probably a dozen) genres. They obviously had a heavy blues influence. Of course that's nothing new when it comes to UK rockers. Beautiful ballads of their own style ("Going to California" comes to mind) but there's nearly always an undercurrent of POWER in their songs. That's probably part of what makes "Stairway" so successful. Blues rock is another genre I'm into - Stevie Ray Vaughn, George Thorogood, early ZZ Top, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Joplin, Foghat, Clapton, Stones, Beatles, etc. pax yall |
