Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 08 Jul 20 - 07:33 AM Here is a bit of feedback about the book. There will be a second run with corrections by the end of July, pre orders are being taken now. It is so important that all of our wonderful traditional songs are collected and registered in book form for us and for future generations to absorb and enjoy. Southern Songster does this in the best possible manner. Martyn Wyndham-Read Carefully-edited genuine traditional songs - words, music and detailed historical notes - a feast for the singer and scholar. Steve Roud A fine continuation of a great series of new editions. Rod Stradling ‘A splendid achievement’ Alan Bearman Sidmouth Folk Week |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 07 Jul 20 - 06:48 AM Editing and rewriting is actively encouraged in Southern Songster. The more versions of the songs that are produced the better. Time will tell which ones survive. Martin Carthy encouraged me to read music and sing from the page. It is very useful. When you find the root note, and work out the scale and accidentals, it's easier than you think. Rumncoke you are welcome to the Mp3 files of the tunes if it will help your studies. My Email is as above. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Rumncoke Date: 06 Jul 20 - 10:45 PM I have spent time during the lockdown trying to learn to read music - again - and having got somewhere with it, I have spent a bit on books with tunes in - luckily my income was not entirely lost. I have left it a bit late in life to get to grips with the dots - but it just goes to show, you can teach an old dog new tricks. I have even been writing a few new verses where I felt there was a need for explanation or variation. Never did really go for the died for love or man walks away sniggering endings, so I have devised a few which I find more satisfactory. I am going to need another bookcase before long though. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 06 Jul 20 - 06:59 PM Thanks for that Ray. I'll pass it on to all concerned. |
Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: r.padgett Date: 06 Jul 20 - 07:53 AM Southern Songster ~ review English folk songs from the Hammond and Gardiner Manuscripts ISBN 978 1 8380928 01 As the title says a South of England collection of over 100 songs from Hampshire and Dorset selected by Nick Dow with musical notation by Cohen Braithwaite – Kilcoyne. Steve Gardham provides 54 pages of song notes on many songs that I have never heard of ~ titles like “The three worms” and “The tinker’s old budget”. Although there are some other popular traditional songs like “Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy” and “Barbara Allen” Yes times have changed but the folk song collectors of the time would have encountered and collected songs that were current at the time. Many of these songs have entered into the folk repertoire of floor singer s and professionals alike. The Southern Songster is a welcome addition for enthusiasts old and young to get their teeth into, so to speak. Steve also supplies the Roud index numbers and makes reference to audio sources available on CD and online with references to notes and tunes .Where possible CDs where songs have been recorded by traditional and current younger folk artists such as Brian Peters, Bella Hardy, Lucy Ward, Eliza Carthy and Bryony Griffith are given. I was drawn to “Yorkshire Park”, which I know as “Sheffield Park” and “Cruel Mother” both of which are on the Yorkshire Garland website of course with audios of Frank Hinchliffe and Jim Eldon, respectively. The addition of ten shanties is also welcome as the main shanty “bibles” have been hard to locate and festivals and folk gatherings do tend to like full blown shanties with “big” choruses! Subject: RE: New Song Book Available soon-Southern Songster From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Jun 20 - 10:16 PM I got notice today that my book had shipped. I can hardly wait. I have a Kentish friend here in California who has been working on a book since I met him in about 1993. It's a collection of British political songs for the period 1750-1850. He's finally ready to publish it. I've been very impressed with Francis Boutle, so I suggested he might want to publish his book through Boutle in the UK. The University of Notre Dame Press did a nice job of publishing Dan Milner's recent book in the US, so I recommended that my friend try Notre Dame for US publishing. -Joe- |
