LTS don't worry about bratling type noises, I have two of my own (even though one's a grown up 'brat':-)). The experience has forced me to acquire incredible sleeping habits which include sleeping through noises and bangs of all sorts. Have no fear.

JohnJ - Great! Welcome (I'm always there on Mondays (unless I'm not) I will be definitely there this Mon (bar catastrophe)

Those of you wanting "Indoor camping" Pippins' 8 berth caravan is still available. If this rain continues, I would recommend it. How many campers have we got. Hands up, please!!!!
There is plenty of assorted floor/spare bed space being offered.

I am frightfully jealous! I hope you all have a wonderful time. What a bunch of nutters you are. This event will live in infamy.

If any of you have ANY energy left for a visiting Yank after this is all over, I shall be jumping the puddle on October 23rd (my birthday even), arriving the UK the 24th, and leaving the 30th. I hope to attend some sort of Samhain thingie at the Rollrights if such a thing occurs...

Liz and Micca, would love to see you and yours again! Given the high price of petrol, I am wondering if a trip to North Wales is even fathomable this time round. I have been advised to get a rail pass before I leave the states...

I hope to hit Glastonbury, Salisbury, Avebury, Oxford/Banbury and any nearby environs...meeting up with fellow Catters would be an added bonus. Beer, kisses, songs and treats for any who offer me their floor.

have a lovely time, all!

See you at the next one!!

Don't worry - I'm used to that sort of reception when I decline something (when you've got kids, you have to develop a thick hide!)
The double booking is a terrible vanity thing, I'm afraid. A friend rang me and asked if I would be interested in helping do some croaking on a proposed CD - and it's not the sort of offer I get every day (If you heard my singing you'd know why), so...
But it's bloody Sod's Law that the two things clash. However, the NEXT UK gathering is a definite must for me.
Meanwhile, if the CD works out, I'll post details.

After weeks of ticking off the days to going aborad (well, Wales is another country after all), I'm now double booked and won't be able to make the trek. I'll be with you in spirit (and wine and beer) nevertheless. And, if I could order a badge, I'd be hugely grateful - give it to any of the madder London 'Catters and I'll settle up with them.
And have a bloody wonderful time every one of you!

Linda, Llanfair lives in Llanfair Caerenion near Welshpool and that is not too far from Shrewsbury.

A chippie is a fish and chip shop, an establishment where you can usually purchase cooked fish in batter and a mass of chips (french fries) that stick together all supplied with excess grease free of charge. Occasionally you strike lucky and find one that does cook the stuff properly but in my experience, they are rare.

Hello Mudcatters, To get a start on my much needed British education, what is a chippie? And where in Wales is Llanfair? Is it near Shrewsbury?

Bill, do you and Sam and Patrish plan to camp? If so, I think I better try to get a bed or a room somewhere. I'll have a mid-size suitcase, small bag and a fiddle. Will there be room??

See you all in a week! Thanks from a Yank (or is that a bad name?), Linda from Portland, Oregon, US

P.S. I'm bringing a minidisc recorder if anyone would like to get themselves recorded for posterity. It's only for personal use, probably isn't professional quality, but it's really teensy and transportable.

The Shark has discovered that the local steam railway is not running that weekend, and is mortally wounded, but I've convinced him that there will be things to look at in Shrewsbury, especially if you are a fan of Ellis Peters' dectective monk, Brother Cadfael. Shrewsbury is a mediaeval town, with a castle and abbey ruins, is nice, has a round church (St Chad's) and a canal (4 Counties Ring), and I was ill last time I went there, so would like to see some bits of it again, without having my head in a bucket.

Beginning to get really excited now....

Bronwen

Looks like I can make the Fri. but not the Sat. A friend has decided to turn 50 on Sat. Very inconsiderate.

Anyway, Red Lion isn't answering, so shall try again later. I've got a meeting in Llangollen on Fri. aft. and will come along thereafter. Do you want me to bring anything? I may be one of the earlier arrivals so if you want help with supper, I'm yours for the asking.

Anyone know if real ale keeps in plastic jugs? I could pick up a couple of six-pinters at the Thos. Watkins brewery in Llandeilo on the way up on Thurs. night if they'd keep OK til Fri ... ?

I have noticed that Badger and Tig will not be comming to the gathering so if anyone who is going would like mudcat badges with their names I will get badger to make them and bring them over with me. The badges are about 2 inches round with the fish in the banjo logo in full colour and your name in blue round the bottom the cost is £1 for two badges. I will have a few tee shirts with me in Wales if anyone needs one. To order badges either order on this thread or email me here or email badger here

We MIGHT have room for one little one leaving London at about lunchtimeish on Friday 13th, if you don't mind travelling with a squeak and a bratling - may suit the less than continent as we will be making more than two stops en route, as child refuses to piddle in the ditch like other sensible offspring. She also refuses to use her potty al fresco, so we have to keep finding proper loos. Will she give up her potty at home though? Will she buggery.

Hello Bron, Thanks for your message. Bill Sables emailed me regarding a ride, and I'll be checking with him. If the timing doesn't work out with Bill, Morticia, your plan sounds great!

As for nervousness about whether we will like each other, I recently attended a similar gathering of Mudcatters at the Old Songs Festival in Albany, New York, US. It was a very nice group of Mudcatters, one of whom was Bill Sables, and it felt like family. I didn't know anyone when I arrived and I had a wonderful time. So I'm sure we will have a good time. After all, it is the responsibility of all of us to be nice to each other, and hopefully that will take some of the pressure off of Bron. I wish I could bring some of our good Oregon Microbrews to you all. It would be enjoyable to compare English and Welsh ales with Oregon-ish.

Looking forward to meeting everyone soon! Linda P.S. Any helpful hints about weather, or weird things I should bring?

Hello Linda, I am so pleased that you will be able to attend the gathering in October.
I'm sure that people coming from "down south" will reply if they can provide you with transport. If not, we can check out buses or trains.
There are still rooms available at the Red Lion and Pippins, and a number of local people have offered beds or settees or floorspace if needed. You can ring Pippins on 01938 810229, or the Red Lion on 01938 810341
Get back to me if you need alternative accommodation.
So far we have 20 mudcatters definitely coming, some with families and/or dogs, and another 10 or so not sure. Not thousands, but enough to make a decent crowd.
Cheers, Bron.

Hello Llanfair and company, Bill Sables told me about the gathering and I'd like to attend. I'm coming from the US, from Portland Oregon - that's on the Northwest Coast of the US - and this is my first trip to your part of the world.

I'm sorting through all the threads to figure out where and when you're meeting. I don't know if I'll have a car or not, so I was wondering if anyone would have room for a passenger in their car. I'll be around Peacehaven, East Sussex, or near Lewes or Rottingdean or Brighton on the 12th or 13th.

I was also wondering about a place to stay. I wasn't planning on bringing camping gear because I wanted to travel lighter. Are there any pubs that rent rooms or B&Bs or something like that?

How many people are attending? It sounds like thousands or more! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Here's to you, Llanfair! Linda Mattson

She is considering setting up a barrel of Wye Valley at the institute for mudcatters only (otherwise the locals will drink it all), and we can fetch anything else from the pub.
