Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: Irish sergeant Date: 20 Apr 00 - 07:24 PM Very sound advice Aine, Mark, Sinsul, Rick. There are resources out there John and the first step is to admit that you have a problem & can't do it alone. You have friends here. Guest Threadie; If you want to know what the subject has to do with music take a peek at how Janis Joplin and Hank Williams died to mention only two. Music isn't the driving force it is because it is static. Music drives us because it speaks to us of life's problems and blessings. Alcoholism is a great problem for millions. If you think it doesn't affect music, listen to some of George Jones stuff. Life is too short to listen to others try to enforce their opinions on how this sight should be run. You of course are entitled to express you opinion. That's the great thing about this sight. One would hope that you will learn a bit of tact and decorum before you do so again. Reguards to all, Neil |
Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: GUEST Date: 20 Apr 00 - 07:12 PM If you decide to quit...remember - you didn't develop the problem overnight, so you won't solve the problem overnight either. Don't be discouraged. The first few months are the hardest. As you slowly undo the habit over time, it gets easier, but the spectre of addiction will always be with you. Learn to view its constant companionship as an opponent worthy of your heroic resolve. Wars are won through a series of small victories. Each day that you emerge a victorious warrior over your desire to drink strengthens your courage. Such noble endeavors as beating an addiction were never meant to be gained easily. |
Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: Áine Date: 20 Apr 00 - 07:05 PM Dear John, You can control it. If you're not in a group, then find one - right now. Go to the phone book and find a number to call -- there are plenty there. Don't overwhelm about tomorrow, or the rest of today. Take it a minute, an hour, a day at a time. And give yourself lots of credit for each second, minute, hour that you stay dry. Keep reading the encouraging messages on this thread and ignore the ones that aren't. My sister is in recovery, and she has a dog-earred poster that she's had for many years that still helps her every day. It's a picture of a baby duck emerging from a hollow log. Underneath the picture is written "Arise, Awake and Conquer!" Go for it, John -- you can do it! -- Áine |

Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: GUEST, Threadie Date: 20 Apr 00 - 07:03 PM Don't forget the 'space' between 'Guest' and 'Threadie'. (Idiot) And what's your problem with the subject? Not musically related?

Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: Rick Fielding Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:59 PM Dearest Threadie...Oh, I know you mean well (you do, don't you?) and probably get very frustrated and some of the "tit for tat" chat around here. Who doesn't at times? But... But.......Music, musicians and alcohol tragedies have been closely related since the first caveman played the drums. I have watched so many friends lose their skills, gigs and friends because of acohol and drug stuff. Every day I see it. John, if this is a legitimate post (and excuse me for asking...'cause some folks like to "flame" when they're bored) you'll find some friends and support around here. Hang in. Rick |

Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: GUEST, Threadie Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:50 PM Now, now, now. small threadie, you shouldn't be giving people a bad name. Go and get a capital letter for your self, and maybe people will be more inclined to believe you. Naughty little sod. |

Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: SINSULL Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:33 PM John, I have watched people I love kill themselves a little bit at a time with drugs and alcohol. The alcohol helped them dull the pain of emotions they were not capable of handling. Get help. You and the people who love you deserve better. |
Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: Irish sergeant Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:22 PM John: I've been there. If it helps, i got mine under control when I started playing guitar. I stay away from bars and such and don't usually keep it in the house, Neil |
Subject: RE: Alcoholism From: MarkS Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:20 PM Once you admit that you can't, then you can. It takes that admission to make the support groups like AAA effective. They are, and you can be helped by them, as long as you are willing to acknowledge that you need the support. I've seen many success stories within my circle and even my family. You can be one too. Go for it. |
Subject: Alcoholism From: GUEST,John Evans Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:12 PM OK, I'll admit it - I'm really struggling with my drinking just now. I like to think that I can control it - but if I'm honest I can't. John |
