Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 25 Nov 05 - 03:39 PM here is the origin of Detroit's name, and logo... The Red Wings were called the Cougars until 1932, when a millionaire named James Norris bought the team. Here's the rest of the story, as told by Bob Duff in "Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League:" "Norris had been a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, a sporting club with cycling roots. The MAAA's teams were known by their club emblem and these Winged Wheelers were the first winners of the Stanley Cup in 1893. Norris decided that a version of their logo was perfect for a team playing in the Motor City and on October 5, 1932 the club was renamed the Red Wings." |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 25 Nov 05 - 10:49 AM actually (going back to what Gnu had written), not many of the nicknames make much sense... -- Do you feel intimidated by a bunch of foliage, even if they are from the mighty Maple? -- "Attack of the Killer Penguins"? Nope, I don't think so. -- Really, the Senators? never really been known to do much by way of government... -- The Anaheim Mighty Ducks. 'Nuff said. Now, on another note, there are a few which are a little more interesting... -- Yes, it is tough to outrun an Avalanche, though they are a little unpredictable ("shhhh....") -- If they do not win another cup, does that mean that Lightning truly does not strike twice? Any other offerings? Brian (who still cheers for the Toronto Make-Believes) |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 22 Nov 05 - 10:06 AM I think it was a mighty fine decision to postpone the game. It shows folks are human, and that it isn't all about big business and such. I am sure that a number of fans in the crowd would be disappointed (for example, those travelling a far distance to the arena), but there is no way either team would have been able to play to their full abilities. Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: bobad Date: 21 Nov 05 - 09:53 PM 9:20 PM EST, 11/21/2005 Fischer taken to hospital after having seizure on Red Wings bench DETROIT (AP) -- Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer had a seizure on the Detroit bench late in the first period of Monday night's game against the Nashville Predators and was listed in stable condition at a hospital. Fischer was given CPR at the bench and a defibrillator was used before the 25-year-old native of the Czech Republic was removed on a stretcher. The game was called off with no makeup date immediately announced. Team spokesman John Hahn said Fischer was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and was stable, breathing on his own and responsive. "It looks like he's going to be OK," Hahn said. Play was stopped with 7:30 left in the period after the Red Wings alerted officials to a problem. Medical personnel worked on the 25-year-old Fischer at the door to the bench for several minutes before he was wheeled back toward the Red Wings dressing room. The decision was made to resurface the ice then, and the remaining time was to be added to the second period. But the game was postponed instead. Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman and forward Brendan Shanahan helped escort Fischer's fiancee across the ice to the bench area. Fischer was diagnosed with a heart abnormality in September 2002, causing him to miss two days of practice. The problem was found on an electrocardiogram as part of a routine battery of tests during the Red Wings' preseason physicals. When the result was abnormal, Fischer was given a stress test that he passed. "There is a little abnormality, but nothing that will stop me from playing," Fischer said at the time. "It's nothing that will bother me emotionally." He said that his heart essentially is a little thicker than normal. "I wasn't scared about the abnormality," Fischer said. "But I was scared about not playing hockey again. That was a shock for me." |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Nov 05 - 09:50 PM NHL Radio is still running live, but when they quit bloviating you'll be able to hear or re-hear the game coverage as events unfolded. The archive is usually up till afternoon of the next day. But to land on the page where it sits, which is not marked as an archive, you have to bookmark it on the day of the game you want to re-hear. (Like now, in other words.) The URL will be the same as it always is, but the page will show "Monday's Games" at the top. Go figure. There was some late news on the Red Wings' site (click there from the NHL site). It was on the thin side, tho positive. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 20 Nov 05 - 10:56 AM Ahhh... a happy Sunday... why? Let me count the ways... Toronto won! 5-1 over Atlanta, and did it without scoring power play goals.. shows they can actually play with full lines. Montreal lost! One less Monday at work that I will need to listen to a co-worker extol the glories of Les Canadiens... schweet! Both St Louis and Chicago won! Okay, they each need one once in a while. Now, if Ottawa would have lost too (to allow the Leafs to close the gap), I dunno if I could have handled it (from a hockey fan's point of view). Brian. PS... Oh, it's also a good Sunday cuz my girlfriend made me a great breakfast this morning, heheh.... it ain't ONLY about hockey, you know! |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Peace Date: 19 Nov 05 - 11:38 PM Thanks, Susan. I didn't know there was a game tonight. It tends to pass me by because I seldom listen to radio and I have no TV. I have got to find a way to stay tuned. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 19 Nov 05 - 10:42 PM Hay Lefty!!! Get out of bed. I want to share a little story about the first time I saw the Wings. The rest of you can tune in as well. I don't mind. I'm having a few Canadian Beer so my spelling may not be the greatest.. Left Nova Scotia in 1963 for the land of what was called "The milk and honey". Ontario.. Took me two days using my thumb. Got to St. Thomas Ont. and said to my sister at the door "Surprise". Well after a month looking for work I was getting a little concerned. But hell, who would hire a drifter at 18. Started work for a garbage company at a dollar and hour and all I could eat. When I look back after spending 35 years in hospital adminstration they were (truth) the best years of my life. Back to the story. Lefty.!!!! are you there?? One day, one of my co-workers asked if I was comming to the hockey game. Detroit was playing against Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull and the rest of thos f Hawks. To make a long story short I climbed aboard a buss that was full of friends and where the suitecases are placed it was full from one end to the other with beer. (cases of 24's) "DOW" I'm going to bed, will relate the rest some other night.................... |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Nov 05 - 09:38 AM I'm starting to really like Alberta. The folks in Edmonton were quite nice to our Blackhawks, cheering our top line as they left the ice, when they had played well. And Calgary proved an excellent host city as well, last night: Blackhawks score four straight goals to end Flames' streak CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Chicago Blackhawks dodged several bullets in the first period and rode out of the Pengrowth Saddledome with an impressive victory. Mark Bell and Mark Cullen each scored twice as the Blackhawks netted four unanswered goals to begin their five-game road trip with a 5-2 triumph over the Calgary Flames, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped. With wins in three of their previous four games, the Blackhawks began their trek in unimpressive fashion, taking eight penalties in the first period and ending the session with a 2-1 deficit. But Bell cashed in on Chicago's lone power-play opportunity of the game at 8:39 of the second and Matthew Barnaby tallied 84 seconds later to put the Blackhawks ahead, 3-2. Bell capped his second straight two-goal performance with 72 seconds remaining in the period and Cullen completed the first of his career late in the third to seal the win. Kyle Calder and rookies Matt Ellison and Rene Bourque each collected two assists while Nikolai Khabibulin made 30 saves for Chicago, which improved to 3-1-0 in its last four road games. (from the Hawks' site) And it's back to Edmonton again tonight, with a 10PM Eastern time start. Quite handy for us, timewise, as tonight we have our weekly Saturday night service, which gets us home about 9PM. Hope to "see" you at the game, Peace! :~) ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: GUEST Date: 18 Nov 05 - 09:33 AM The Wings, courtesy of Chris Osgood, stunk the joint up last night. It was pathetic. Osgood went into the 3rd period up 3 to 1, then gave up 4 straight. Last minute heroics by Shanahan and Yserman tied it up only to have Osgood whiff at the first shot in OT. Wings lose 6-5. OCSABB |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 17 Nov 05 - 10:31 AM For US Teams-- Don't forget to check Fox Sports' regional TV coverage. We didn't have FSN programmed on our TV so it took awhile to realize we could watch most of the Pens' games. We liked them before we discovered that-- it's a happy coinkydink for us. Check and see who your regional FSN channel covers-- you might be missing some good games. Between OLN, FSN, and streaming radio, there's almost a game every night, somewhere, that can be enjoyed. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: leftydee Date: 17 Nov 05 - 10:04 AM The Wings didn't look so hot last night, Beer. Even McCarty got a wrap-around goal on Manny. They looked good for about 10 minutes and then got beat to the puck the rest of the game. Oh well.... onward and upward! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 17 Nov 05 - 09:33 AM It was pretty amazing hockey, Frank, all the way around. I LOVED the touch on the puck the Flyers have-- the accuraacy of passing and the way, when a pass arrives, it seems to come off the stick so sweetly. I loved the strategies of the #1 line and the wonderful adjustments to new defense rules-- I was watching hockey when the Flyers franchise was born. I always appreciated the physicality of their play. I'm glad to see they still have it-- plus, a lot more skill than I recall from those days. But wow, those Pens! The whole game was exciting-- Lemieux should be so proud, how they did with the adversities of the evening. ~Susan |

Sure did in the Flyboys last night! Frank P.S. another overtime game, I think the Flyers should save themselves the wear and tear and just say, "Hey, let's meet back here in a coupla hours and just play an OT period!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 16 Nov 05 - 02:51 PM with this "new" NHL, these young playmakers are pretty freakin' amazing. Ovechkin (now 3-for-3 in shootouts), Crosby, Stahl... these ain't names that are only going to be around for a year or so! the guard is changing folks, and it is a leaner and faster time for hockey. Like everyone, I hate to see the marquee players leave (yes, even Brett Hull), but the future is looking nice and bright. Brian |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 13 Nov 05 - 11:13 PM What the hell you want to change for?????? Bertuzzi has 2 goals already and he is playing a very controlled game. in fact, if he keeps this play up he will get a hat trick and be first star. So no you can't. Beer (Red Wing) Carter just scored. 3-1 Vancover 4:45 of the second period. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: dianavan Date: 13 Nov 05 - 11:00 PM Yea - Can I change my mind? Bobad you are right about the Bertuzzi thing. As if that wasn't bad enough, did you hear him say, "It is what it is." Three times! Takes a brain, eh? Besides that, I haven't figured out this new 'who gets to play who' Just as I was beginning to understand it, they changed the rules again. So why do we play the teams we do? I want to change teams but I suppose its too late so I'll just pretend that Bertuzzi isn't on the team. Pretty hard on the team, though, to hear the crowd booing because of one guy. Must effect their game at least a little. |
