Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Jul 07 - 04:37 PM Sinsull- We are so sorry to hear about your broken tooth, and if it had happened at the party you would not have appreciated our efforts to come up with a teeth-hauling shanty. With regard to encoures? Well, I certainly wouldn't want to wait three years to schedule another one. But it all depends on energy and the schedule of inevitable conflicts. We almost didn't have this one because so many of our Press Room shanty friends were unavailable or in recovery. But those who were able to attend now have a wealth of new memories to carry them through the doldrums of summer. Cheerily, Charley Noble

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Jul 07 - 11:46 AM Tom et al- We did have a glorious time at the China Sea Marine Trading Co. barn annex in Gray. The weather was cooperative, hot to cool but no rain. Over 30 people were there, about half of them strong singers but others willing to give it a try or just enjoy listening. There was an abundance of food. The grills did a great job with the hamburger, chicken, sauage and hotdogs (my new "Volcano" performed superbly!). There was an abundence of salads, including crab on slices of tomatos. We didn't run out of beer and soda but the harder stuff disappeared fairly fast along with the wine. There was strawberry shortcake with whipped cream for desert along with an assortment of cookies. Bunker did a great job of creating space to assemble within the barn (which really is his workshop for renovating nautical antiques) and there was room for an assortment of benches, seamen's chests, and folding chairs (with cushions that we supplied). And there were all those wonderful sign boards that Bunker has on the wall, the dozens of muskets and swords piled up in the corners or along the wall, and of course that wonderful aroma of days gone by. Roll & Go jump-started the singing with a song led by each member. Then we permoted Carol from apprentice to full membership into Roll & Go; she now possesses the coveted and collectable Roll & Go sweatshirt and T-shirt with "The Revenge of the Great Calamari" logo on the front. Then we all took turns leading songs around the circle. Lynne Cullen, Alison Freeman, Tyler and her friend Molly (?) were there as folks that people at the Press Room might recall. Phil Swegart who is a fiddler with my old contradance band came with his wife. Some of Alision's friends from Massachussetts came up and some were very good singers. Bunker and Sharon also invited some interesting friends, one of whom knew my old mentor Bill Bonyun very well and had done a documentary film on him which I'll try to track down. Their also was a former Coastguard fellow who is a historical novalist whom I found very interesting. Just as we were packing things away a full moon came up and we all stopped to admire it. Thanks again to Bunker and Sharon for hosting this party. Next time we shouldn't wait 3 years to hold another one! Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Jun 07 - 09:49 PM The party starts at 6 pm as mentioned in the initial post and in the invitations. It looks as if there will be somewhere between 25 to 30 people attending but we can accomodate more. The basic food and drink and paperware is being provided by China Seas and Roll & Go but exotic additions are welcome. For those who find street addresses useful, the Bunker/Bondroff farmhouse is at 229 Portland Rd. (Rt. 100/26), 1.5 miles south from the center of Gray. Weather looks great for a BBQ! Some of us will be there earlier to help shift things around in the barn. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Jun 07 - 10:05 AM Barry- Well, we'll miss you as we lead all your songs including that incredible rendition of "Yangtse River Shanty." But you owe me a tour of Boston some time. Come to think of it I'll be down there the first week of August with nothing to do but prowl around while Judy attends a conference. Numbers are beginning to firm up for the China Sea Shanty Sing and BBQ. At this point Roll & Go and associated folks will be there. Members of my old contradance band the Sea Slugs will be there. Sinsull will be there. A couple of folks from Portsmouth are coming up. Other nautical singers are still shooting the sun and trying to determine where they are now and where they might be by Saturday. Sharnon and Bunker also have some friends attending. So I would say about 20 to 30 people will be there for sure. Sinsull has graciously offered bed space for out-of-towners, and other options are also available for those who wish to sleep. The weather is predicted to be glorious, sunny and in the 70's. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: Barry Finn Date: 24 Jun 07 - 10:10 PM Sorry Charlie, my young cousin got married out on the West Coast a year ago & the 30th is when we are celebrating it on the East Coast. I have ovr a 100 cousins & even though it's a very big family, it's a very close fammily & we don't miss a chance to get together like like this, ever. Espically when it's at the family homestead, in the middle of the "Wilds of Mission Hill, deep in the heart of Roxbury" (home of the drive bye). Have a great sing! Barry P.S. If you see clappers (for bells not balls) take a picture, actually maybe you could take pictures anyway & show them here. Love to see what Captain Bunker's new store, barn & abode looks like, I'm sure it'd be interesting. If you find out anything furrther about the "wild boy" let me know too, I' wonder too. Tell the parrot to "fuck off". |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: Bat Goddess Date: 14 Jun 07 - 07:33 AM W'd love to gather again at the Bunker barn -- and the shop is like a museum but with everything available for sale -- but it looks like our travel will be curtailed for about a month. Snuggie's a Hahn's macaw, little in size but big in spirit. Right now they're singing 'hello, hello, hello.' Maybe they'll join the festivities. Jewish mother that I am, I worry that they don't eat enough, or well enough. So I'm off to the kitchen. Looking forward to seeing everyone. S |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: SINSULL Date: 13 Jun 07 - 08:27 AM GUESTS of Honor? Do we get to walk the plank first? |
|
Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing June 30, 2007 (Maine) From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Jun 07 - 06:24 PM Now this is what we'd encourage people to do June 30th. Come early in the afternoon so you call experience the China Sea Marine Trading Co. store in the Old Port of Portland, near the corner of Fore and Pearl streets, near the Customs House. Capt. Bunker and his wife Sharon maintain an incredible twilight zone of nautical bric-a-brac from at least the seven seas, There are pricely antiques to droll over, practical marine hardware at reasonable prices, and a lot of other clothing items and books to check out. When you first walk into the store, the smell of old tarry ropes immediately assails your senses. If you'd like a cannon for your Boston Whaler, there's a nice one most lately in use by Malay pirates. If your boat is somewhat larger than a Boston Whaler then you might want to try out the 12-pounder cannon. Or maybe you would like a West African fetish, or a mahogany mermaid. You thirst for nautical clocks, there's a whole wall of them. You need a ship's wheel for the back of your van, they're piled up in another corner. You'll also get to meet Shanghai, Bunker's rainbow cockatoo. The basic message is stop by the store before coming up to the barn in Gray for the party. The party itself will take place in Bunker's workshop-barn, attached to his old farm house in Gray, about 20 minutes north of Portland, two miles off Interstate 95. We'll have basic food prepared to eat at 6 pm, and a keg of beer. Other food and liquid refreshments are welcome. Last time around (was it really 3 years ago?) there was continuous singing and storytelling. When in doubt please re-check the initial invitation post to this thread, ignoring the initial date. Cheerily, Charley Noble Roll & Go |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Jun 07 - 11:16 PM Thanks, Sinsull, and you and Jacqui will be guests of honor. South Portland is about 30 minutes from Grey, Maine, where Capt. Bunker has his barn, just off Interstate 95. More information to follow. We've also put in a request to change the thread title to the new date. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Apr 07 - 08:13 AM I'd like to remind folks that we've postponed the China Sea Marine Trading Co. singing party in Maine from Saturday, April 28th, to Saturday, June 30th. I would encourage folks to attend the New Hampshire Folk Festival in Portsmouth, NH, on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28th. It looks like a great program including Gordon Bok on Friday evening. Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Mar 07 - 08:18 AM Warmer would be nicer even though Capt. Bunker's barn does have a pot-bellied stove. Warmer weather would also make overnight camping in the back yard more pleasant. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Mar 07 - 10:35 PM As I feared, there are too many conflicts with Saturday, April 28. The next available date seems to be Saturday, June 30th. This date works with Capt. Bunker and Sharon, and Roll & Go. Given that it is a 5th Saturday it shouldn't conflict with any monthly events. If you know of a major conflict, please draw it to our attention. It's been three long years since we've pulled one of these together. Maybe we're getting rusty! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Mar 07 - 08:24 AM Deb- Yes or as I said in the initial post: "Anyone else you know who might be interested in participating is welcome to attend but please notify me so we can keep track of numbers. Storytelling as well as singing is also welcome." But we do want to keep a running list of attendees so we can better accomodate them. We may have to re-schedule this event because of a possible conflict with a special event in Portsmouth. We are awaiting clarification. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Mar 07 - 08:08 AM And thanks to Joe, my initial post has corrected dates as well. A further suggestion for folks planning to attend on this Saturday would be to stop at the China Sea Marine Trading Co. shop in the Old Port of Portland, 324 Fore St., between the U.S. Customs House and Rosie's Restaurant. It's a truly magical place where as soon as you step in the door you'll smell the scent of old tarred gear, see flashes of brass and shadows of ship wheels and lanterns, paintings and prints of nautical scenes, and mysterious carved figures from Africa and the South Pacific. As C. Fox Smith phrased it: All among the keys without a lock, and locks without a key, The old boss-eyed binoculars and sextants on the spree, New Brummagem and old Bombay a-tumbling side by side, A brown bald-headed idol and an "Extra Master's Guide," – Mouldy, musty, dumb and dusty, broken on the shelf, I thought I heard the sailor's fiddle singing to itself. I'll post a link soon to some photos I took of the shop the other day in a somewhat futile attempt to capture this shop from the Twilight Zone. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 26 Mar 07 - 07:50 PM Barry- I'm sure if you're looking for someone to "clapp your bells" you'll find one at Capt. Bunker's soirée. We even may get a song put together on the topic! And there is no end to the nautical stuff that Capt. Bunker has in his store, the barn annex, his house, and the storeage units. He's the curator of the flotsam and jetsam of the seven seas. I note that the thread title now has the correct date: APRIL 28TH. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: China Sea Shanty Sing April 22, 2007 From: Barry Finn Date: 26 Mar 07 - 07:27 PM Mary you opened yourself up, you can kiss the parrot's ass if I don't get my cooler back. (He,He,He) I'm gonna try to get there Charlie. I got 2 really old, really heavy & really nice brass bell(not balls, they don't need clappers) that both need clappers, maybe Capt Bunker has some that'll work that I can buy cheap. Doryman & mate, you may want to hit this just to see if there's anything that you can use for the restoration on the 'Adventure'. You would not believe what this man has for sale, stuff youll never around Cape Ann, aside from the parrot, it doesn't leave Bunker's shoulder. Barry |

I've negoitiating with my favorite Joe Clone to correct the date on this thread to Saturday, APRIL 28, I really knew I needed to avoid NEFFA and I just misread the calendar. Hell, April 22 isn't even on a Saturday. Apologies to anyone else who was confused or distressed. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: China Sea Shanty Sing April 28, 2007 From: Charley Noble Date: 26 Mar 07 - 01:23 PM We haven't had one of these great parties in well over three years and we're finally planning another one this spring for Saturday, And here's the basic invitation: You are cordially invited to a grand potluck/nautical singing party on Saturday, Anyone else you know who might be interested in participating is welcome to attend but please notify me so we can keep track of numbers. Storytelling as well as singing is also welcome. Do dress in layers because we never know what the weather might be like in late April. Directions to 229 Portland Road in Gray: The little town of Gray is about 30 minutes North of Portland just off the Maine Turnpike (Exit 11 unless they've changed the number again). Once into "downtown" Gray (don't blink), take a sharp right onto Rt. 100/26 and proceed about two miles and keep a sharp lookout to larboard for a "Blue Peter" flag, an old red cape farmhouse with ajoining barn, with a cannon or two in the driveway. You really can't miss it. Phone at Gray HQ: 207-657-2117 Cheerily, Charley Noble |
