Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'We'll All Die Game' Aussie folk song! From: Bob Bolton Date: 10 Apr 07 - 11:28 PM G'day folktheatre and Charley, Well, some of us have survived ... and are getting through our first lunch break back in harness! It was a great Festival - and I'll know how well I enjoyed it when I pick up 900 (or more) prints covering the Festival set-up / Easter Master Classes / National Folklore Conference ... oh - and the Festival itself! I'm not really good on Johnny Ashcroft's repertoire, but I would be pretty sure that he either wrote this song himself, or it was written for him. I'll see if I can come up with a better answer with a bit of research ... but not on work's time. Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'We'll All Die Game' Aussie folk song! From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Apr 07 - 11:14 PM I see from Johnny Ashcroft's discography that he also recorded a song and an album called THEY ALL DIED GAME (1971). |

I just refreshed the National thread to see if any survivors surfaced. No one yet... Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'We'll All Die Game' Aussie folk song! From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Apr 07 - 08:45 AM Mike- I would suggest sending a "PM" (Personal Message) to Bob Bolton here at Mudcat. However, one reason why our usual friends from Australia haven't responded is their likely involvement at the National Folk Festival taking place last weekend at Canberra. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'We'll All Die Game' Aussie folk song! From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Apr 07 - 10:47 AM Mike- Here's what I could find via Goggle: One learns that "We'll All Die Game" was a fatalistic phrase attributed to the Ned Kelly gang in their final shootout, but later adopted by Australian soldiers during WWI and WWII. Johnny Ashcroft, recorded this one on WE'LL ALL DIE GAME, Australia–Our Land, Our Music Volume I, EMI Aust 8146672 It's not clear yet who composed the song. Here's a link to Ashcroft: Click here for website! At least you should be able to order a CD. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: Lyr Req: 'We'll All Die Game' Aussie folk song! From: folktheatre Date: 08 Apr 07 - 07:03 AM Hi mudcats. I heard this song on a Qantas flight to Adelaide of all places(!). They had an alright CD available to listen to of Australian folk songs. It had all the obvious ones (great mind) like Ballad of Cobb and Co and Waltzing Matildha. Anyway, I heard this song and I loved it. I'm glad I wrote the name down as I can't seem to find the words or generally anything about it at all. I have a friend with a great book on Australian folk songs who I have yet to ask but if anyone knows anything about it at all especially the lyrics I would be very happy and it would sit comfortably amongst my repertoire! I was surprised it wasn't on here already unless of course I'm blind and that has happened before.... Mike R. |
