Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: john f weldon Date: 24 Jul 07 - 06:25 AM No, that;s the UK, where they have a different manual.... "Would you be so kind as to to play a selection of deft and tuneful riffs between the singing of these verses..." |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: TheSnail Date: 24 Jul 07 - 05:28 AM In 40 years on the UK folk scene, I have never, ever heard anybody say "Take it". That's jazz, surely. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: JohnInKansas Date: 24 Jul 07 - 03:00 AM I regret to inform you all that my copy of The Folk Singers' Manual is not for sale. Regretably, as there are far too many violations of the rules therein, and my own attempts to inform persons in violation thereof have been crudely, rudely, and objectionably rebuffed on every ocassion, it is my conclusion that said Manual must be retained and sequestered in a place of safety pending the return of fairness and respect in the community for which it was compiled. The Manual thus cannot be made available for inspection, reference, or citation at this time. (© has been renewed and remains valid.) ((I haven't even let LiK see it.)) John |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: Amos Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:12 PM Pretend to have had a lot of whiskey in your past, even if you can't stand the stuff. Keep close tracks of all your heartbreaks , so you can call on them when singing "Barbary Allen" or "Lord Lovell". Pretend you know what it might be like to kill a man just to see him die. A |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: pdq Date: 23 Jul 07 - 02:07 PM If you are from Brooklyn, Greenwich Village or the Bronx, learn to sing cowboy songs. Tell all the people about trail drives, Indians, horses, cheating women and the Texas Rangers. Even better, learn to do rope tricks and yodel! |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: john f weldon Date: 23 Jul 07 - 01:02 PM Always try to seems older, wearier and wiser than you really are. Lines like "Uncle Dave taught me this in '37" work well. If from Alberta, Minnesota, or Switzerland, sing songs about whaling. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: voyager Date: 23 Jul 07 - 12:29 PM Well Folk(ies) - Glad to see this note has got the creative juices flowing.... Perhaps a Mudcat Thread on "Folk Singer's HowTo Guide' is in order! For example - "just murder good prose and sing thought your nose...." Traditional Folksinger's Lament - Eric Bogle With all due respect, the SmoBro UTube skit made me bust a gut from the scriptwriter's gag line (regarding the Folksingers Manual). Turns out that the phrase 'folksinger's manual' is a Google-buster. Ain't no such thang. So as I remove tongue-from-cheek I urge my comedic friends on the MudCat to just Take It! voyager PS - When will the 'Little Known Folksingers of the 60's' thread reach 1000 entries? |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: pdq Date: 23 Jul 07 - 11:12 AM "I also vaguely recall that they had one script writer who became very well-known, but I can't remember who..."> Steve Martin and Mason Williams were both part of the Smothers show and both are well-known, at least to folk and comedy fans. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: katlaughing Date: 23 Jul 07 - 11:01 AM from some info on the SmoBros.' show: The so-called guest, the manual reveals, should "entertain and enlighten but not offend or advocate. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: GUEST,Jim Date: 23 Jul 07 - 10:59 AM If it takes more than two trips to bring your stuff into the gig from the car, it ain't folk music. |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: Amos Date: 23 Jul 07 - 10:47 AM If you can't imagine what the situation (in the song) felt like, don't sing it. A |

Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jul 07 - 10:01 AM But if we can't find a real Folksinger's Manual, I wonder what sort of thing should be in the putative manual. Certainly this one:

Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jul 07 - 09:44 AM Synbyn, not knowing where or what the Folksingers' Manual might be, tried to give the impression that voyager was foolish for asking. I didn't know where or what the Folksingers' Manual might be, either. I checked bookfinder.com and google, and had no luck. Then a faint whiff of a memory came back, which is becoming a rare event for me these days. If I recall correctly, the Brothers Smothers would occasionally mention the Folksingers' Manual in their routines. I get the impression the Manual existed only in their imaginations (or in the imaginations of their script writers). I also vaguely recall that they had one script writer who became very well-known, but I can't remember who that writer was. Anybody know? Take it! -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Folk Singers Manual From: synbyn Date: 23 Jul 07 - 08:37 AM find a bookshop...and Take it... |
Subject: Folk Singers Manual From: voyager Date: 23 Jul 07 - 07:20 AM According to the SMOTHERS BROTHERS the 'Folk Singer's Manual' says 'When someone says TAKE IT, you have to TAKE it'! Do Mudcatters know where I can get a copy of this guide? See also Boil This Cabbage Down (SmoBros on UTube) Enjoy the show voyager |
