Carry Grant used to tell a story about how he advised Dick Van Dyke, then working under his real name-Penis Truck Lesbien,to change his name!
This is from David Niven's book-The Moon's A Balloon.

I've just been speaking to Tony Forster (the Pig Dyke boss) on the phone, and Mary and I are going to their next practice to see how we all get along. Should be interesting.

Whatever happens, we can't be there for the Straw Bear weekend, which is a bit of a shame.

I always thought that Dick Van Dyke sounded like there was a trans-gender situation happening, whereas Peter O'Toole simply had a double phallic name.

So what"s with the Americans , then ?? They had/have DICK VAN DYKE, after all"s said and done !!! God Help us !! Anyway, "Anniecat" went to school with Mrs. Forster, and we have had some wonderful times staying at their house in Peterborough, and freezing our tits /nuts off on Plough Monday at Straw Bear.......Roll on January !! ----I would LOVE to offer my services, but guitars and Molly don"t really "go", and anyway, Henley is too too far away !!---Sorry !!

Just for the record... Pig Dyke is an area of land near to where we practice. It's a drainage ditch.

If I remember rightly, in the USA Black Dyke Band were asked to change their name in case the confused Americans thought they were a black lesbian band, true to their Yorkshire roots, they said NO.

Incidently I live about two miles from Black Dyke Mills.

I just love the language........In my world an "Orange Peel Morris" would mean a poor paint job on a British car.....LOL.....Love it!

They are a GREAT looking team too.
Our feeble little team from Canada Orange Peel Morris are planning a tour of England for next year and Pig Dyke are one of the teams we hope to get together with.
So if you give me a list of tunes we can certainly join your band for one night.
Good Luck with your hunting, hope to meet you in person in July 08
JohnB.

I just love it when our mutual language diverges....truly separated by a common language. Thanks for the good laughs and fun.....and good luck to ya' PDM!

Here are a few Pig Dyke Molly vids on YouTube.

Spaw's puzzlement reminds me of the time the Black Dyke Band went on a tour of the States a few years ago, and they had to drop the name in all their publicity for fear of misunderstanding and they just called themselves "Brass Band from Yorkshire, England" or something like that. (And here they are in action.)

Somehow "Pig Dyke Molly" makes me think more along these lines.

Well, it makes a change to see Spaw out-grossed!

Pig Dyke Molly website, from the Fens where they've still only got black and white internet.

Hi Sarah - I hope we'll be seeing you and Tom on Friday at the John O'Gaunt!

Pig Dyke Molly are looking to expand their band with additional lead/melody line musicians. The current line up is melodeon, percussion and the famous sousaphone.

For those not "in the know", Pig Dyke dance traditional East Anglian Molly in our own special way, and dress in surreal black and white. Practices are on Mondays, 8.15-10.00 in Peterborough, and we have a number of local and national festival bookings lined up for next year.

If you're interested, or just fancy coming along to see what we're all about, then call Tony Forster on 01733 345 883 (leave a message on the answerphone) or email jantony@waitrose.com
