Subject: RE: BS: £23,000,000 of jet! take a look! From: Pistachio Date: 28 Jan 08 - 07:52 PM Good fun had by all - and absolutely no harm done. I hope they keep it up, all jobs need humour. I imagine my old Sgt would have had a fit if she'd have seen that sort of behaviour. H. |

From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Jan 08 - 07:06 PM I was simply making a little joke, Teribus, and in doing so invoking the image of Horatio Hornblower, one of my favorite characters of all time, in one of his more strict and sober moods. He was like that sometimes, as were many British officers. ;-) I have no objection at all to the lively antics in the video. As you say, they are rather reminiscent of skylarking in the old British Navy. |

"Not fitting of the Queen's forces," he'd say. "Undignified in the extreme. Disgusting, in fact. Put that man to work at once cleaning out the bilges." (Little Hawk) Not in the least Little Hawk - There was a pipe-call for "Hands to skylark and dance" in the Royal Navy of Nelson's time, in which the antics as shown in the clip would not have been out of place at all. One thing is for certain, you would not be best advised to try any of it on the flight deck of a carrier (crowded, noisy and very dangerous). |

Subject: RE: BS: £23,000,000 of jet! take a look! From: Sorcha Date: 21 Jan 08 - 12:11 AM Just a dumb question here. Why does the Pound Sterling symbol show in the Subject box but not (to me at least) on the thread title on the main page? What should be £ shows to me as ? I've had this happen several other places and not even consistently then. Sometimes the proper symbol and sometimes a ? mark. I just think it's odd is all. |

Subject: RE: BS: £23,000,000 of jet! take a look! From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Jan 08 - 11:00 PM I liked the camouflage jobs on those Vietnam-era jets, Slag. Today's military jets all seem to be in overall haze grey...I gather it's a good practical camouflage, but boy is it ever dull looking! |

Subject: RE: BS: £23,000,000 of jet! take a look! From: Slag Date: 20 Jan 08 - 09:12 PM I crew-chiefed F-4s during the VietNam war and I would have been court-marshaled for antics like those. I also would have had my back out! Very cool! |

Subject: RE: BS: £23,000,000 of jet! take a look! From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Jan 08 - 12:42 PM Hmmm. Amusing. Well, I think that Horatio Hornblower would have viewed all this with a rather stern and sceptical eye. "Not fitting of the Queen's forces," he'd say. "Undignified in the extreme. Disgusting, in fact. Put that man to work at once cleaning out the bilges." Now just how did it happen in the last few decades that American inner-city street culture crawled crassly across the Atlantic and took over the cultural sensibilities of Great Britain, a once noble civilization? What a horrifying development. I blame it on too damned much watching telly! ;-) Ali G has the whole ugly phenomenon mapped out to its final horrid permutations on his satirical shows for 'da Yoof'. |

Subject: RE: BS: £23,000,000 of jet! take a look! From: JohnInKansas Date: 19 Jan 08 - 08:57 PM So is the "characteristic" of British marshalling the obvious "crouch" (and apparently suppressed sound emission) at the end, as demonstrated by all but the last one? Cute - despite the ambiguity of the defining characteristics of the sytle. John |
