As a person who is NOT a Republican, I clearly see that the Democraps, are always whining, slurring, misinterpreting issues, jumping on remarks
out of context, changing the subject, to champion some lame excuse, and doing battle out of emotion, rather than fact.
Ok, happy now???
P.S.Honestly, though, I'm not a Repuglican.

Ah, Bill, ya had to do it, didn't ya? Ya just had to write the P word and pollute this thread! I was really trying to make this about the main GOP candidate, you know. Oh, well, you were kinda defending this thread, so I guess I forgive ya.:-)

"That said, I feel sheepish, and contrite, that I started out with the very reasonable statement that this wasn't worth talking about, but then wrote a couple of paragraphs about it. "

There is no reason to feel bad. We should be having these conversations to learn from each other and even more importantly, to learn about ourselves.   I think all of us like to see our own opinion in print, that is human nature. But I enjoy the sociological experiment that threads like these offer.

As you noted, you made an "assumption" - and that is what most people do. The whole idea of the "book list" was another example. We like to grasp at germs of truth and see things we want to see that will justify our existing opinions. I'm just as guilty, but I have to say I've been taking a step back recently. It is refreshing - and it is comforting to know that we do not need to resort to the mudslinging.

We can bash Republicans and conservatives for their backward stances and dangerous positions on social issues - abortion, health care, the economy, etc. That is the real fight!

"Another mean-spirited thread started to bash Republicans."

Hmmm..if the Republicans would ALLOW the campaign to be about real issues, rather than rhetorical remarks about Obama's 'hidden meanings' in his remarks, there might be a lot fewer similar items!

re: "lipstick on a pig"...Obama has made VERY clear that he didn't mean that like they are all puffed up over, but they will NOT stop claiming he 'insulted' Palin..now, tell me more about 'mean spirited'!

Ron: My bad, I made an incorrect assumption that the quote was from the book, not just a verbal interview.

Sorcha: If you want to "give it a rest," don't participate; don't even open the thread.

That said, I feel sheepish, and contrite, that I started out with the very reasonable statement that this wasn't worth talking about, but then wrote a couple of paragraphs about it.

THEN talk about other things about McCain, folks, be my guest. I didn't say this thread had to be about her and her slip ONLY.

"It was a dumb thing to say, let alone publish, but so what? "

Wait a second- you said "publish". As far as I know, this was only a slip of the tongue on a TV show - a poorly constructed sentence. Are you saying that she PUBLISHED those comments in a book, or are you saying that the media is publishing.

"where do you suppose his daughter come up with those words/ideas?"

Kat - from experience. Did you watch the entire interview? She is 23 and not a media pro by any means. Do you sincerely think that her intention was to go on national television and slur all the families that have sons and daughters in the military? Suppose, for a second, that she was that self-centered - do you think ANY of her media handlers would allow her in front of a camera? Do you think her book publisher would chance the backlash and the loss of revenue?

Come on, you are more open minded than that. Walk a bit in someone elses shoes.   This is not something that we need to be making a big deal over. We end up looking bad.

" Jumping all over every trivial little thing like this is counterproductive, no matter which side you're on."

Well put.

It was a dumb thing to say, let alone publish, but so what? Jumping all over every trivial little thing like this is counterproductive, no matter which side you're on.

McCain's ordeal as a POW was significant but, unfortunately, not unique. His family undoubtedly suffered along with him, although of course in a different manner. Those members of his family who were not yet born at the time would have experienced the whole thing only vicariously.

Every member of every family of every serviceperson who has died in any war has a somewhat comparable experience, as have the kinfolk of individuals who survived with permanent disabilities. Is the experience of surviving POW camp, essentially intact, really any worse?

This thread is about McCain. pdq, if you want to post positives about him, feel free, but don't expect some of us not to refute it. With so much attention being spent on his running mate, I think it would be good to focus more closely on him and his family, etc. since he really is the one running for president.

Ron, where do you suppose his daughter come up with those words/ideas? If she thinks that way, doesn't it say something about the way the candidate thinks/believes?

I wish I could take back every time I slipped and said something unintentional.

This seems like a very cheesy arguement, and it is starting to smack of desperation.

Comeon, Obama has enough strong points that we do not need to resort to such slimy arguements.   Aren't we better than that??

no one knows what war is like other than my family, period."

Maybe because their party started the damn thing anyway. Makes sense to me. Maybe it will take another family to stop it.

As of yesterday, McCain's daughter informed the world that beside the fact that she has two brothers in the military and her is "a famous war hero," their family also know war like no one else. Her exact words were "no one knows what war is like other than my family, period."
