I had to take the Lamp out of MY refrigerator ! Everytime I opened the door , the light came on and I went ino a fifteen minute routine !

They're also a much heavier tempered glass bulb.

Appliance bulbs are not the same thing as "normal" 15 W bulbs: they have a thicker filament, which leads to lower light ouput and considerably longer life.

In the U.S. most large grocery stores carry appliance bulbs. They are quite flexible--can go in fridges or ovens.

But, before we got our first fridge (which had a teeny freezer section formed by the cooling coils in the top of the only compartment) we had ice delivered; we kept it in an "ice chest".

Do iceboxes have ice in them? In the UK, the ice would be kept in a freezer (or a fridge with a freezer compartment)> A fridge without a freezer compartment would not be cold enough to hold ice.

But - who cares - I prefer my ice in a gin and tonic.

Our fridge is about 30 years old. As near as we remember, the bulb is original. And yes, I still tend to call it an icebox.

What you need is a 15 watt SES E14 bulb (small Edison screw). It's more or less standard on UK/European fridges. Any reasonable hardware shop - or one of the sheds - should be able to sell you two for £1.50-2.00. Don't worry about the quality - Hotpoint (these days they're actually owned by Merloni) wil use the same source manufacturer.

Get the cheap replacement. If it works, job done. If it doesn't, it didn't cost much. Take the old one with you to make sure right size/shape., obv.

Nothing special about them, except they aren't made in such quantities as regular room lighting, hence more expensive.

7 quid? pah! I've just ordered an Epson projector lamp! £219.10 + VAT!
(just as a spare in case the current one dies inconveniently)

I'm nipping out to the shops in about 30 mins;
so some quick expert advice would be very helpful,
if I can safely use a cheap 'normal' replacement bulb
from the local "Pound Shop"
instead of waiting several days for a well pricey replacement from Hotpoint..

serious question.. no seriously.. it is..

Fridge freezer bulb just died after well over 15 years constant daily use since new !!!
So, I need to get a new one.

Will any 15 watt bulb with the same screw fitting,
thats near enough the same size to fit inside the wire protective harness,
do.

Or are fridge bulbs some sort of special material and construction ?
to justify the £7 to buy one online from Hotpoint spares shop.

mind you, 15 years.. is that a record..
or just average high standard for early 90's 'Made in England' factory production.
