Subject: RE: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: Megan L Date: 05 Mar 09 - 07:09 AM Perhaps it would be best to start with the simple before the insults. Gnu can you check the settings it may be set to panorama or letterbox which would give a band top and bottom |

Subject: RE: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: gnu Date: 05 Mar 09 - 07:00 AM Well... my first post was "sketchy" as I just wanted to find out if anyone else had a similar problem. I am going to investigate the warranty (2 years on display). Just for clarity, especially considering JiK's post... TVs purchased Sept 07. One in my house. One in Mum's house. The horizontal white lines across the screen cover the top 4" of the screen. Portions of the lines disappear depending on the colour. As both TV's began to have this trouble at about the same time, I wondered if it might be sommat to do with the New HD stuff. |

Subject: RE: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Mar 09 - 07:22 PM Very few "big box" retailers will willingly take back a purchased item, and even fewer will "service" one. In fact most major items come with instructions in the packaging that state that you must go to the original manufacturer for any warranty claims. A few US states have "merchantability" laws that require a seller to refund or exchange a product that you can show was defective at the time of delivery, but few merchants, even in those places, will willingly do anything for you. If you know the local law, and make a lot of noise when the store is crowded, you may get an exchange for another like item, or possibly a "shopping card" (so that you have to spend it in their store) for the original purchase price. Cash refunds are rare on items of any real value; although Walmart is among the ones giving least arguments - and prompt cash refunds - for smaller items if you have your original receipt and within a week or so. (Walmart usually is even fairly flexible about their stated "within 10 days of purchase" if you can think up an excuse for why it took a little longer.) Policies may vary with the season though. Refund/exchange policies frequently are different for "Christmas season" purchases when fraud takes an enourmous jump than at other times of the year when your "honest face" (and willingness to cause a disturbance) is about all you need. I would expect that there is no local service agent "authorized" by the maker for your product, and that the shipping and "inspection fees" if you send it to the "factory" will be approximately equal to the original purchase price, and some manufacturers who "warrant the product" don't warrant the parts in the product so they may try to charge you for any "replacement parts." If it is at all possible, you usually are ahead if you can get a replacement from the seller, or a refund of some sort; but waiting even for a short time before looking for your fix can make this difficult, if not impossible. At the very least, you need to IMMEDIATELY find out what the manufacturer's return/exchange/repair policies are, and how much it's going to cost you to get a "free" replacement or a repair. John |

Subject: RE: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: Greg F. Date: 04 Mar 09 - 05:50 PM Will Walmart tell me to ship the TV's to Phillips... You betcha! Wally World don't do no steenking service. Now, if you want to bust unions, employ illegals, exploit employees, support slave labor, & etc, then WalMart's your kinda place. But service? Fuggeddaboudit. Next time, buy from a responsible retailer. |

Subject: RE: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: bobad Date: 04 Mar 09 - 05:34 PM Did the display model at the store have the same picture? |

Subject: RE: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: gnu Date: 04 Mar 09 - 05:03 PM Well, that is the downside. Will Walmart tell me to ship the TV's to Phillips in NE? Can I find out on the Phillips website wehere a local company might perform warranty service (not so far). Thing is, we can still watch the Tvs and it's still winter here, so I am not pushing it yet. Just seems odd they would both do the same thing at the same time. |

Subject: RE: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Mar 09 - 04:57 PM If the white lines are overlaid on top of the picture, you're probably getting interference from some outside source. With cheap CRT TVs, one TV could be interfering with the other, and it now appears on both TVs because they've come to some sort of "mutual agreement," have signed a defense pact, and are about to attack you. You probably should get those particular sets out of the house immediately, before they have time to gather weapons. If the white space is above the picture, and the normal picture just begins lower, it's probably a failure (reduction in peak value) of the vertical synch circuit. In older sets this could be adjusted with knobs on the back, but in newer ones it's probably "inside" the box and would require (semi) professional service. If it's the latter, it could be caused by the "fried spider" syndrome, in which some critter has died where there's a "leakage short" in the circuit, but it's more likely due to "cheap components." Cleaning out any extraneous detritis can be hazardous, since it most likely is in a high-voltage area, and the high voltage often does NOT GO AWAY when the set is unplugged. Use the warranty, if it's still good (or as good as a WalMart warrenty ever is). John |

Subject: BS: CRT TV Problem, Canada From: gnu Date: 04 Mar 09 - 03:27 PM I bought a couple of TVs at Walmart. Good price. One fer me, one fer Mum. About a month ago, white lines about 4" in height at the top of my screen. I was washing Mum's floors the other day and heard sommat on the TV and went in to see it. Same deal on her TV. Still under warranty. But, odd. I am wondering if it has sommat to do with the new HD or whatever. Anyone else? I can still watch TV, but.... |
